Power Generation | Singapore | Sun Cable
This ting is going to run a (10GW?!?) 3800Km HVDC power cable from Australia to Singapore...

GoKin Packs | Powered by you
Backpack power generator that recovers walking energy of a sort by attaching ratcheting cables to the back of your shoes. Which means this backpack is effectively trying to trip you by pulling your feet out from under you, if it pulls too hard. Not suitable for hiking through thick underbrush. I wonder how annoying the cable tension is on walking gait/posture. That said, it seems to have pretty good performance as it's effectively using leg extension for power (much like a land rowing machine)

Interesting new hose for probe&drogue aerial refueling systems, which allows power and data transfer at the drogue end unit via a clamping device, as well as telemetry of the end unit, which would be helpful for positioning. An interesting possibility is data transfer from surveillance as their current data collection is starting to exceed reasonable radio transmission capabilities. So, instead of waiting until a UAV returns to the ground to offload data, a UAV could offload data to a command tanker aircraft in theater.

New USB 3.0 Standard Has Power To Charge Laptops
This might have legs, but the fundamental problem is where and how to deliver the power. Laptops can use the spec for a common wall charger, but they definitely won't be able to power downstream devices at a full 100W. So you have this weird situation where devices that consume power need to be capable of consuming power at all 5 power levels, or at least sensibly give up on high power modes and live with normal USB power. The slightly weird situation would be desktops that refuse to provide power, but an intermediate powered hub can.

Developing power-over-fiber communications cable: When total isolation is a good thing – Sandia Labs News Releases
Low power for now, but allows remote powering of sensors and provides data transmission capabilities, all in one cable. Endgame probably is a prism on the sensor end, splitting off power frequencies to the photovoltaic power cell, and the communication frequencies to the optical data sensor.

Softbank founder backs Japan's shift to renewable energy | ITworld
Gee, people have been proposing an offshore HVDC grid intertie for japan for years. Why is he getting so much credit? Real balls is proposing interties to russia and korea up front rather than "later as part of a pan-asia supergrid". Also, needs to take some pointers from the guys at the other end of the supergrid, namely DESERTEC-australia.

So Son's saying what a lot of people have been talking about for a long time now, but he makes for a good spokesman. 4GW offshore HVDC supergrid intertie in the sea of japan, pan-asia links similar to DESERTEC, independent ISO/TSO to break the stranghold of regional oligopolies in japan and have fair feed-in tariff structures without wasted energy. No calls for grid energy storage though, though if a true supergrid is operating, it can be reduced or eliminated if the timezone spread is far enough. Also trotting out the national energy security horse too.

Official Google Blog: The wind cries transmission
The other shoe drops regarding Google being a power broker. This offshore long distance transmission line network kills two birds with one stone; power leveling wind turbine output by averaging over a large geographic area, and new long distance transmission capacity with little to no NIMBY blockage (because it's very difficult to block what people can't see and is beyond the 12 mile limit) carrying power from southern US power producers (which includes the new nuclear reactors in Georgia). No other major power broker can probably bring online such large north-south transmission capacity using existing rights-of-way, and will likely have to either buy into the project at a disadvantage, or end up getting screwed by Google later in the power spot markets.

DESERTEC-Australia | Clean Power From Deserts | Welcome to DESERTEC-Australia
Seems these guys are proposing a supergrid style tie-in of a DESERTEC setup in the Australian outback to markets in SE Asia, India, and China, piggybacking on natural gas pipeline infrastructure and possibly augmented by offshore wind (likely at convenient transformer substation rigs and LNG/methane recompressors). (Interesting that they don't make the jump between Japan and China, I wonder why...)
