Dell VRTX seems to be an interesting integrated storage+blade server enclosure, in tower and 5U rackmount versions. Good for a small ESXi cluster, and cuts down on cables. The PCIe switching helps, compared to something like the Supermicro MicroCloud.

Interesting wind turbine design, basically gives up on trying to capture energy from the center, and tries to capture tip shedding vortexes. Also it may not be obvious but it appears to use diffuser rings and is swept forward so air gets funneled towards the center, but the center hub cone forces the air back out towards the edges, possible increasing local velocity. A little surprising they don't fair the backside of the hub. Appears to use active tracking rather than a passive guide vane. Weight is an issue for a ringed fan design like this, so it won't scale up to megawatts, but since their target is quiet operations in residential areas, that isn't such a big deal.

Interesting talk here, including the practical limit of 4000 Hadoop nodes (32bit address issue), and rigging this up with 4GB of RAM per node (general limit for a 32bit processor not using PAE). The rules will change when those 64bit ARM chips come out though.

This is a pretty strange engine design. The problem point will probably be sealing between the blade "piston", the crankshaft disc slots holding the blade, and the duct walls. Which might be mitigated by keeping the ducts at most a half cylinder in depth where the blade dips out most from the crankshaft disc.

I think the Thigpen rotary subwoofer is doing basically the same technique of active blade pitch adjustment but this is working at higher frequencies to cancel the sound of the fan itself. Based on the pictures, it looks like instead of modulating the whole blade around a mounted axis from the hub, it may be doing some kind of blade edge/tip bending/turning using a small line of electromagnets along the inner rim and some ferromagnetic material embedded in the blade tips, which neatly avoids the expense of hub pitch control at the cost of fatigue life of the blade tips.

This is a weird positive displacement rotary compressor, where the "piston head" is this blade that runs around a toroidal chamber which pushes against a fixed orientation "cylinder head" disk which is slowly rotating, and right when the blade would impact the fixed disk, it slips through a slot in the rotating disk. Pressurized gas slips out through slots in the toroidal chamber wall just before the the fixed disk. Weird, but workable...

Now this is an interesting concept. Using an inflatable ring, you have a tension structure that's lightweight. The ring probably doubles as a venturi wind focuser as well. I wonder what sort of inflation pressure you need though.

If this is a real Microsoft anecdote, it makes you wonder why Microsoft didn't partner with a PDA maker and one of the big storage companies like EMC to make a robotically managed ARM blade server silo/rack? Real blade servers now are approaching the sizes of LTO tapes. It then becomes a question of how much local SSD storage you want in the ARM blade, versus accessing a SAN over the blade backplane?

Well, that, or do a drawer setup of 3U or 4U drawers containing many vertically mounted blade servers, like a Sun Thumper storage server.
