N2 gas is an effective fertilizer for bioethanol production by Zymomonas mobilis
Wow,um,so old data was wrong and new redone data says this bacteria can be fed pure nitrogen gas as fertilizer for cellulosic ethanol production, and it's awesome. Which basically means an oxygen gas separation plant's effuse of nitrogen and CO2 could be fed directly into the bacterium beds. Air Liquide must love this news...

Cultivation of an Obligate Fe(II)-Oxidizing Lithoautotrophic Bacterium Using Electrodes
Looks like they got rust making bacteria to live without iron, by simply supplying them electricity (electron substitute for iron oxides) and their regular diet of CO2. Which means you now have the basic foundation for a synthetic biofuel production system with electricity and CO2 inputs, provided you can tweak the bacteria to output biofuels directly like alcohols or oils, to be skimmed from a vat.

Apparently, these guys were already working on using microbubbles to improves algae density in production. Now, they have retasked the same tech to help with floatation/separation/harvesting to ease gathering and drying, which is somewhat energy intensive normally. Naturally this assumes algae for biofuel where you are using the biomass directly (thus killing the algae), rather than using algae types the excrete oils that can be skimmed (and keep the algae alive).

Interesting result, but they failed to do the simple check of seeing if simply bubbling CO2 gas through the algae grow medium fluid at the same critical timing would result in the same increase in performance. Specifically, is direct stimulation/fertilization of algae with carbon dioxide sufficient, or is the chemical pathway being used here specific to free swimming carbonate in solution.

Roving mobile processing plants to produce biofuels
Interesting concept for a compact biomass to liquid biofuel mobile processing plant, to upgrade low yield biomass to more easily transportable/usable biofuel. Still needs an external hydrogen source, so for practical purposes you will dragging along a CNG or LPG tank to supply the hydrogen reformer, unless somebody feels like running a high power electrolysis rig.

Using algae to convert light and CO2 directly to excreted recoverable ethanol, rather than going for a biomass algae approach for conversion to biofuels/synthetic fuels. Cuts out the middleman syngas production and conversion steps for fuel production (well at least for ethanol, for other stuff you may have to break it apart back to syngas)

Fine-Tuning Growth Conditions Helps Cyanobacteria Flourish
Upping the phosphorus a bit means the limiters for growth are generally CO2 and light. Light you can do with tricky clear acryllic tubes and panels in novel arrangements. But the phosphorus is a problem. World supply is getting tighter due to industrial agriculture and runoff, so there is talk about peak phosphorus. Since we don't harvest sewage sludge and runoff for phosphorus, it gets trapped in sediment or washed out to sea. Most of the easy phosphorus sources are gone now.

Technology Review: Power from Glucose
A potentially interesting solution to power implants and other medical devices, such as pacemakers and insulin pumps. But the interesting long term goal is an auxiliary excess glucose/calorie consume in the body, to overtake the normal metabolism. Basically, the idea would be to implant the biofuelcell in obese people (or people with oddball metabolism or excess glucose in their bodies such as diabetics), run the biofuelcell to reduce blood glucose levels. In an obese person, the body would react like it's being overly exercised (or starved?) and burn fat to compensate. One of the long term problems with obesity is the difficulty to both increase caloric expenditure while reducing food intake. This would neatly bypass the expenditure problem by having a secondary calorie consumer, since realistically, nobody is reliably capable of reducing their food consumption. But I wonder about the caloric starvation effect on hunger...

Economics Improve for First Commercial Cellulosic Ethanol Plants -
Supposedly a big drop in the enzyme costs to process non-food biological feedstock such as switchgrass or food production waste such as corn cobs. While biofuels are interesting, I wonder about the feedstock sources. Food production waste has some fundamental limits in quantity, and while switchgrass and other non-food feedstocks can be grown in undesirable land, it must still be cultivated/harvested, which means more land/water use normally...
