Using a silicon chip coated in nanoantennas, they effectively made a metamaterial mirror for a laser, allowing a 1D laser scanner LIDAR that is solid state. Made using methods similar to LCD manufacturing, which means the beam can be actively scanned at will, so not a fixed scanning cycle either.

Interesting that they have to spread out the beam first before hitting the dump, and the dump is made from a block of graphite. The quench protection via electrical dump to resistor grids is also interesting. I would have thought they might try to recover the power from the dump into some other storage, but I guess the safety criticality means they don't.

Suitable Technologies
New Beam telepresence robot avatar. Nice overall design, has a charger dock that uses inductive charging so precise alignment or hard docking clamps are not needed. Still, it doesn't seem to have screen/camera height adjustment to work with sitting people at the remote site, and it doesn't seem to have autohoming features for the robot to return for self charge as they seem to expect the pilot to drive back (no SLAM map to guide the user back to the dock?).

Meta Perception: Human Interface
I sort of like this. Embedded AR video and audio projectors sense user gesture actions to determine desired activity, then project video and sound onto existing surfaces for a person to interact with. Pick up a banana and stick it by your ear and mouth, and the system will think you are trying to make a phone call (Banana Phone!), or you open an empty pizza box you are sitting in front of, and the system interprets that you need a computer terminal so a desktop and keyboard are projected. By applying the interfaces over existing objects, you reduce the need for interactive terminals, so this is a push towards sustainability, provided such a system is ubiquitous.

Basically an ultrasonic spot beam transducer setup, firing a focused beam of ultrasound towards the receiver, which I assume is just a tweaked piezoelectric microphone setup, to receive acoustic energy and convert that to electricity. Claim 8V transferable (what is the wattage?) and below OHSA sound limits. If the receiver and transmitter use active guidance, you might be able to use a phased array for the transmitter.

Just this side of crazy enough to work...

I'm having a little trouble figuring out how you get the poles to lean back and forth in a steady wind. Artificially texture the pole surface to create turbulence maybe? Is there enough natural turbulence and wind speed change to ensure the pole swings enough to generate a practical amount of energy? I wonder if this could be built in a smaller form like some sort of rooftop astroturf module for building retrofits?

Spectrum-splitting solar modules and Roadmap to 50% efficient Solar Cells
Interesting continuing research into the somewhat obvious ploy of using a optical spectrum splitter to separate light frequencies and send to them frequency optimized discrete solar cells, as a way to surmount the materials science problems of making stacked multijunction multispectrum optimized solar cells. If the light from the primary concentrator is being split by frequency, I wonder if you could do the trick of sending specific light bands left/right/down by using a double prism block? There is the overriding question of whether it would be cheaper to do the beam slitting before or after the concentrator?
