Hrm, this seems to use a magnetic field projection device to trick magstripe readers into thinking they just read a magstripe (the data of which is stored elsewhere). Which is fine if the reader doesn't have a physical card detection sensor as part of it's mechanism (which I imagine most don't if it's an exposed swipe reader as that only adds cost)

Galaxy Note™ II Smart Dock
Interesting dock, that almost a tablet like a notebook laptop or a home computer when docked at home. Which might make sense if a person is mobile, but regularly returns to fixed locations. In theory should be able to drive a fair sized HDMI screen, and use a keyboard and mouse. Now, whether this is compatible with things other than a Galaxy Note Tablet...

NAE Website - Coming of Age in New York: The Maturation of Energy Efficiency as a Resource
I like the concept of "market aware energy consumption asset" AKA the smart appliance, that can fiddle with it's operational cycles to time shift energy consumption when energy is cheaper (and possibly chose an energy source, say local vs grid), work in concert with other smart appliances to keep overall consumption below a certain threshold (say to not go over the capacity of a battery bank's output), and possibly cooperate with the local utility or regional ISO.

Consortium for SEP 2 Interoperability
So a couple of major IP transport layer standards organizations are working on compatibility to support smartgrid applications in the home. HomePlug would cover HomePlug aware wired hardware communicating over powerline (PLC) (and covers communicating with electric and hybrid vehicles charging in the garage), while wifi and ZigBee cover mobile and low power sensor hardware. Sure took long enough to do this, and it will be interesting to see the fight between Cisco, the power meter makers, and Android for domination of the home energy management space.

New Measurement Device Helps Monitor Power Consumption via Power Line -- Tech-On!
So somebody is finally getting around to the problem of monitoring non-smart appliances and getting the data to building management systems without having to install new networking lines (while avoiding wireless like ZigBee due to limited spectrum) by using an inline PLC modem to send data to a management station/controller. Smart to use the inline device as a switchable sensor/master. Now if only somebody like Intel or Atmel or TI could make a nice single chip hybrid sensor/PLC modem for both retrofit and new build devices, things could really change.

TEPCO to begin tests of electricity 'smart meters' : Business : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri)
Interesting that the granularity of data is in 30 minute intervals and that the data is available though a TEPCO website. Is the granularity an issue of how the information is transmitted (such as a data only GSM/UMTS radio modem only firing in 30 minute data bursts)? You would think dumping data through the powerlines via PLC to the local transformer to collect and forward would be easier. I also wonder about the web API to access your own power data, and how your power metadata will be handled (privacy/marketing concerns), considering third party groups such as Google will want access.

Ford announces car-to-grid communications system for EVs — Autoblog
Finally pulling the pieces together for an actual vehicle2grid setup, at least for testing purposes. There are long term issues that need to be resolved regarding the balance of control over charge/discharge cycles and minimum %charge remaining in the battery of PHEV/EV systems. Am I willing to give up control of 25% or more of my battery capacity in exchange for some sort of meter crediting or reduced rates?

Power grid is found susceptible to cyberattack | ITworld
Smart meters as part of a smart grid network are equally vulnerable to security attacks as other classes of computers. Unfortunately, in the metering and SCADA industry, security is usually an afterthought due to assumed closed network design. In this particular example, some of the compromised smart meters were using Windows XPembedded, which likely was never patched since it left the factory.

march 2009 by asteroza - IEEE, conference drive smart grids
IEEE working group P2030 is working on standards for smart grids, and their interoperability. Hopefully they will embrace and enforce open standards without significant hurdles (such as patent licensing, and certain types of regulatory body certification which can not be achieved normally with opensource software/hardware though considering these are potentially considered life critical systems some of that may be inescapable). Making the barriers to entry for for smart grid products and interfaces is critical.
