Um, so they cheated here a bit, and basically entertained the possibility of integrating the fuel cell and storage tank with conventional (i.e. existing) gas fired on-demand hot water heaters which are common in japan, rather than forcing the homeowner to rip out their existing hot water heater. Well, closer to reality is they still have to rip it out, but at least with this setup, you can stick the backup heater into the nook a building was originally equipped with, and stick the fuel cell close to where AC compressors are typically located for a japanese residence.

Something about a weird transverse thermoelectric effect being utilized by making stacking conical rings of thermoelectric materials to create a tubular, rather than planar, thermoelectric generator, which is well suited for jacketing steam or hot water pipes.

Hrm, I wonder if this could be used out in the field by having an inline aerator microbubbler near the nozzles of agricultural watering equipment? Much easier to implement in hydroponic systems though. Actually, I wonder if you could make an oxygen and carbon dioxide rich water stream for hydroponics, and if that has merit?

Panasonic plans home-use storage cell
Panasonic now getting into the home energy storage market with lithium-ion battery cells. Though one would think you would integrate some ultra-capacitors to better handle the random push/pull of home energy states. Now if somebody could make a nice home energy controller as a COTS device, that can link with Tokyo Gas distributed Ene-Farm home fuel cell systems and Kyocera solar panels to manage the total power profile and to potentially return energy into a smart grid, then you might have something. There seems to be some movement afoot regarding that central smart grid controller, creating an interface independent router to handle the comms interfaces and protocols as a universal device. Especially since you could use a GSM cell modem or inline in-band PLC or a custom radio or even the home's internet connection.
