If you can take out the backing metal foil of a PV panel, then line the bottom with a narrow band IR re-emitter that converts rooftop heat to a band that can escape out of the atmospheric IR window, allows roof cooling and power generation simultaneously in theory.

New semi-transparent glass solar PV panels, intended to be filler wall panels in apartment balconies, allowing you see through the balcony panel somewhat and produce power. Since Japan has so many apartments with balconies, but comparatively little roof access for those same apartments, this is interesting compromise solution for green energy distributed generation, as well as improving the visibility/lighting/aesthetics of a balcony/veranda area. This also works pretty well in Japan because of certain building codes, which sometimes outright require southerly facing balconies, as well as protecting those balconies' sun access by limiting the shadows of neighboring buildings. So in practice, if you have a large apartment block going in a residential area without a huge concentration of tower blocks, you should have almost unrestricted access to the sun on teh balcony side of the tower block.

Oddball mix of inflatable mirror/lens assembly mounted on a lightweight fiber reinforced concrete frame. Essentially makes a closed, slightly pressurized container for the energy production components, to protect them from rain and air contamination. Though the ETFE film getting discolored due to age/exposure reducing power output might be a problem. The collector is universal, in the sense that the central core receiver can be either the CSP type using pressurized air for the heat transfer fluid (which nominally gets dumped through a gravel tank for heat storage), or a water cooled CPV receiver. Recently did work with IBM using IBM chip semiconductor manufacturing techniques to make CPV water cooled solar cell panels with integrated cooling in the silicon.via microchannels.

Apparently, by mimicking LED design concepts and other tricks, like increasing the reflectivity of the backing mirror, these guys have created a single junction PV cell that broke the 26% barrier. They apparently want to move into low volume initial manufacturing to produce iPad recharge cover panels, as that is a good enough demo of manufacturing methods, and is a servicable niche that can get them early revenue during the solar industry downturn.

Improving the light-harvesting of amorphous silicon solar cells with photochemical upconversion - Energy & Environmental Science (RSC Publishing)
New trick for solar cells, upconverting red/IR photons that are not captured in a PV cell and pass through by combining two photons and turning it into a single yellow photon, and sending that back into the solar cell for capture. Kind of like a frequency doubler crystal. But this seems to be a reflector architecture of sorts, so that means the red/IR that passed though probably heated the solar cell already before it even reaches the upconverter reflector, as opposed to a frequency doubler crystal which is on the front end usually.
