Isao Echizen's privacy shield, aka anti-facial recognition IR glasses, featuring infrared LED's in a sunglasses frame that disrupt the face enough to not be recognized. Apparently even Google Picasa is getting good enough to defeat people wearing regular sunglasses to avoid recognition, and allegedly CVdazzle makeup as well, so the prof made an active defense measure. Currently gunning for an unpowered version of the glasses, using wavelength specific reflector films to emulate the active IR lED attack method.

Okay, so these guys are cheating a little here. The LED lights (customized Solais Lighting LED bulbs) flash a high speed morse code MAC address, which a smartphone camera app decodes and sends to a cloud service to pick up information and content to be shown in the app. So info can be exhibit contents, as well as indoor navigation locations.

Interesting LED lamp that uses saltwater and sacrificial electrodes to generate power. A sacrificial magnesium rod works with salt water (such as ocean water) to create current to power the LED light. Fill the lamp once with seawater to get 8 hours of light apparently (need to swap salt water at that point due to chemistry). The sacrificial rod is good for 120 hours of use, though you probably should flush the thing with freshwater and dry it out for storage.

Sonardyne announces collaboration with WHOI engineers to launch a unique subsea optical communication technology – BlueComm
No company website yet, but Lumasys will be fielding commercial versions of BlueComm, a 200m range underwater blue LED optical communications platform, capable of 20Mbps. Matching this up with both TCP/IP, and delay tolerant networking (DTN) would make this really useful for underwater ROV teleoperation. Unfortunately, probably still defeated by a container full of tape in the bandwidth department, but beats the pants off acoustic systems (if you can tolerate the range limit or can employ a relay mesh network).

Alta Devices - Welcome
Apparently, by mimicking LED design concepts and other tricks, like increasing the reflectivity of the backing mirror, these guys have created a single junction PV cell that broke the 26% barrier. They apparently want to move into low volume initial manufacturing to produce iPad recharge cover panels, as that is a good enough demo of manufacturing methods, and is a servicable niche that can get them early revenue during the solar industry downturn.

A nice little system using LED lighting to also transmit data, combined with a custom small form factor retroreflector/receiver (not much bigger than existing IRda sensors). They are also doing PLC and DC PLC work, so that the overhead lamp assembly contains not only the LED and transmitter encoding circuits, but also a PLC modem for transmitting data over the power supply circuit so you can retrofit into exisitng lighting systems without running new data cables.

This could be used as an alternative to active RFID tags. The basic system triggers on an IR code from the reader, then burst sends the Opto-Chrono code output. If you could get really low power, it may be possible to make a form of passive tag , which uses an IR solar cell to gather power outputted by the reader (primary power IR lamp at constant power output , and a secondary comms IR at a different frequency) in a capacitor for operation.

Decrease in Nitrate Concentration in Leafy Vegetables Under a Solid-state Illuminator -- Samuoliene et al. 44 (7): 1857 -- HortScience
Interesting research that giving a plant during 10% of it's total light exposure time exposure to a LED light source reduced nitrates, boosted carbohydrates, and appears to have other benefits. 10% exposure means it isn't necessary to build expensive LED lighting for all greenhouse plants (simply rotate their trays through a properly equipped area). This may be applicable to hydroponics.
