Google’s Solar-Fueled Cyber Drone Crashes in New Mexico Test
Sound like the Solara 50 went down during the climbout. Wing spar failure, maybe due to local wind conditions?

Interesting trimotor configuration, but the dead mass of the feathered prop motors seems bad. Perhaps some sort of tractor-trailer setup like a Cessna Skymaster, but have a clutch/transmission allowing the motor to switch between propellers?

Their US patent 8224189 is interesting, basically a laser retroreflector with a flickering blocker/moderator, much like an externally lit LCD screen. Modulating the blocker means a ground based laser can receive data from the UAV via modulated reflection from the corner retroreflector skin, which is probably much lower power than a RF transmitter or onboard comms laser. WOnder what the data rate is though.

Facebook tried to buy this company and reserving exclusive production for over 1100 comm relay aircraft for the initiative. But Google bought them out instead (for project Loon, a competing initiative?

Sandia did a new study for persistent UAV's using unusual configurations for power and propulsion, effectively turning them into low altitude satellites. Which shortens to "Hey, what if we stick an RTG into a medium sized UAV that is really lightweight?" and other neat ideas. RTG sensor blimps might be interesting. Would like to see full report details though...
