Hachimoji DNA and RNA: A genetic system with eight building blocks | Science
SBPZ are the new letters, with potential expansion to 12 total letters. Still need to build up the synthetic biology to actually build stuff from the new base pairs, but now we can code it. Maybe useful as a forensic marker for GMO as it is not natural?

How Canadian researchers reconstituted an extinct poxvirus for $100,000 using mail-order DNA | Science | AAAS
This is kinda bad, but it was known that this was going to happen eventually. The mail order DNA/protein synthesis companies do screen the orders, but small enough fragments spread out over enough companies would evade detection. Now all it takes is a reasonably well educated individual (read bioengineering grad student), and oh hey, a certain class of extremists tend to originate from engineering backgrounds due to a black/white worldview and then...

Apparently the Atlantic Killifish has some sort of rapid evolution gene quirk, which has allowed it to adapt quickly to human polluted waters fast.

University of Rhode Island Make Transgenic Trout that are Myostatin Unhibited So They Have 20% More Meat for Better Aquaculture
I can understand the desire for a higher protein yield in commercial land based aquaculture, but seriously. These fish look like muscle bound gym freaks. People are definitely not going to be buying these fish whole at the supermarket. A secondary issue is that the increased muscle fiber count without a corresponding increase in muscle fats will make the meat lean (which may be a good or a bad thing, depending on the way you prepare fish for consumption). And lord have mercy is these GM trout ever get loose.

Slashdot Science Story | One Variety of Sea Slugs Cuts Out the Energy Middleman
A particular sea slug seems to already have a large amount of the DNA required to make chlorophyll, but lacks chloroplasts so has to ingest them by eating algae. Once onboard, you now have an animal with a photosynthetic metablism boost and an alternative energy source for the animal. While it would never be enough to run a human, it would be a nice little boost for people living in the tropics. Possible early genetic treatment for proto-transhumanists, as opposed to that gandollinium nanobot energy source?

Authentication of forensic DNA samples
While the researchers show a potential solution to detecting faked DNA evidence (un-methylated DNA due to whole genome amplification production technique), this puts a fair bit of current DNA evidence under doubt. Lawyers will have a field day, because so much is made of DNA evidence having the image of being infallible.

Welcome to GeneTree - You Belong Here.
A social network with a member genetic context, arguably for reaching out to very extended family. As someone pointed out, this is an interesting mix of Facebook and 23andMe. Unfortunately, I suspect it could quickly devolve into a kind of ethic enclave/old boys network kind of isolated walled gardens. Worst case being a SNS catering to eugenics proponents, rotating around genetic segregation. Though that can arguably be said to already be in motion based on the expected DNA profiles insurance companies are collecting to charge extra to unhealthy bloodlines, which may also by accident or by design fall along ethnic/racial boundaries. Demographics coming back to bite us.
