similar to liquid piston, being a reverse wankel, but rather than LP's lozenge piston, this one uses a square, which ends up forcing the seals to be on the piston like a wankel, which negates the reverse wankel's primary advantage of tip seals on the cylinder wall (allowing cooling/lube)

Uses a working fluid with a scroll expander turbine (for the generator) and post-expansion heat exchanger for hot water. So it's directly boiling the working fluid itself, which is closed loop. How that would compare to a fuelcell combustor microturbine generator with exhaust gas heat recovery to heat water for CHP is probably one of cost.

Different from Ene-farm rigs, this is an augmented home gas heater, using a reformer and a SOFC fuel cell stack to coproduce power and heat. Not a water heater rig though. Shame you can't chain rig the fuel cell stack with an adsorption cooler plus water heater/space heater.

Riken's press release on the Fresnel lens solar thermal wankel rotary heat engine. Apparently the lens tech is fairly advanced, being developed as a telephoto lens for observing high energy cosmic rays, with high optical transparency and a surface roughness less than 20nm. They used a three sided lens structure (top plate and two vertical plates), called a "Fresnel Sun House" to gather light well onto a T shaped thermal absorber/heat exchanger, even when the sun is close to the horizon at sunrise/sunset.

Um, so they cheated here a bit, and basically entertained the possibility of integrating the fuel cell and storage tank with conventional (i.e. existing) gas fired on-demand hot water heaters which are common in japan, rather than forcing the homeowner to rip out their existing hot water heater. Well, closer to reality is they still have to rip it out, but at least with this setup, you can stick the backup heater into the nook a building was originally equipped with, and stick the fuel cell close to where AC compressors are typically located for a japanese residence.

Smart grid eyed to smooth power supply to Tokyo offices : National : DAILY YOMIURI ONLINE (The Daily Yomiuri)
While potentially viable, this feels like a giant pack of FAIL to me. Buildings that large often have internal generators for emergencies and such. I believe Mori building corp is currently running a couple in Roppongi full time to supplement power in the core of Tokyo. It then becomes an issue of ranking external grid power costs next to the costs of operating an internal generator, and fire it up when the external costs get too high during peak hours. This smells like subsidies for installing CHP gas turbines, like those Capstone microturbines, or for CHP fuel cells like the Enefarm ones by Tokyo Gas (if they fix that stupid problem of needing grid power to operate the fuel cell pumps, so if the grid goes down you lose the fuel cell too...). The talk of purchasing renewable energy is total BS from a system perspective unless there is actual power generation and transmission system reform, and an ISO to manage it. But that goes hand in hand with smartgrids anyways.

Hrm, I would normally suspect a gas engine here implies a piston judging by the mention of a linkage, but that puts a cap on efficiency since you want to avoid predetonation. Interesting implementation of a variable cylinder volume, but couldn't you do that in a simpler way with a prematurely closing intake valve and simply use cylinder/crankshaft inertia to fight the suction that would develop? But why a reciprocating engine? Capital costs? You would think a fuelcell or capstone microturbine would be better...

Interesting quiet generator for smallish yachts. 800W, but near silent and has decent fuel efficiency, but a major aim is CHP applications, since it provides enough heat that you might be able to run an adsorption cooler for the refrigerator/freezer rather than an electric compressor, and the heat is also applicable for hot water and radiant heating, which is nice in colder climates.

PV Battery, Water Heater Combined for Efficiency -- Tech-On!
Definitely a "duh, why didn't I think of that" idea, though I imagine there may be long term issues regarding clarity of the clear plastic due to mineral accretion from the water and external clarity due to UV degradation and air pollution. But it is a neat trick to use water's optical properties to improve collector efficiency. Japan has a long history of home solar water heaters, but then tend to look terrible after a number of years and can be a real eyesore because they usually integrate the tank as well (but in Japan, home resale value is so low because people care about the land value more and build homes with poor longevity anyways so people care less about external appearances).
