Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes
Poultry industry to oversee chicken-farming standards as ministers move to create industry-led deregulation. Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda. [ so industry funds its own regulatory body, lol! ] [...] Other sectors that could get control of their own guidance include the cattle, sheep and pig farming industries. //&! Zika and Ebola: A taste of things to come? - BBC News
Both diseases have been known about for decades, and yet in both cases no vaccines or drugs were available when we most needed them. So what's going on? Is this just a terrible coincidence, being caught off-guard like this twice in such quick succession, or is it part of a worrying trend and a taste of things to come? At first glance it wouldn't appear that the two diseases have much in common. One is difficult to catch but a ferocious killer, while the other spreads with ease but is relatively harmless to the vast majority of people infected. Yet, in both cases there is something novel, either in the way the virus has spread or in how it affected people which has made the outbreaks more of a threat. In global health security terms that is a real concern, because such sudden changes of modus operandi can not only make public health threats even more difficult to predict or anticipate than normal, but also make all the difference between a localised outbreak and global pandemic.

Ebola 'devastates long-term health' - BBC News
Their studies on survivors in Liberia showed large numbers had developed weakness, memory loss and depressive symptoms in the six months after being discharged from an Ebola unit. Other patients were "actively suicidal" or still having hallucinations. More than 17,000 people in West Africa have survived Ebola infection. The evidence, being presented at the annual meeting of the Academy of Neurology, is an early glimpse at a much wider study of long-term health problems after Ebola.

Swine flu spreading across eastern Europe and Middle East | Global development | The Guardian
3,000 people a day in Ukraine are being hospitalised with H1N1 virus as scientists investigate why flu strain is hitting those in younger age groups hardest [...] Rates of severe H1N1 infection have spiked within the EU. Hospitals in eight countries have recorded an increase in the number of cases requiring intensive care over the past three weeks, according to the WHO. [...] CDC [...] estimates that the 2009-10 global H1N1 pandemic caused an estimated 284,000 deaths worldwide. Vaccination programmes and residual immunity were thought to have kept the virus under control. Experts are struggling to determine why the latest outbreak is proving so aggressive. [...] The vaccine for the 2015–16 season in the northern hemisphere includes H1N1, H3N2 and B virus strains [...] But less than 1% of Ukraine’s 45 million inhabitants have been vaccinated against the flu, and potentially life-saving treatments are in short supply.

Narcolepsy boy wins £120k swine flu vaccine damages - BBC News
Families are entitled to £120,000 through the Vaccine Damage Payments Scheme, but only if they can prove "severe" disability. Josh's narcolepsy was triggered after he was given the H1N1 2009 influenza vaccine, known as Pandemrix, made by GlaxoSmithKline, in January 2010. He also suffers from cataplexy, which affects muscle control, but he had shown no symptoms of the illness before being vaccinated. UK is 'vulnerable' to next Ebola outbreak - BBC News
"We are also concerned that, in the unlikely but possible event of a domestic outbreak, the UK lacks the capability to go further and manufacture enough vaccines to vaccinate UK citizens in an emergency. "Existing facilities are degraded and new plants will take years to build, leaving the UK in a vulnerable position." The concern is that should a disease such as Ebola spread around the world then countries would look after their own interests first, making it hard for the UK to get hold of vaccines. Prof Adrian Hill, who was involved in trialling Ebola vaccines at Oxford University, described the lack of vaccine manufacturing as a "national security issue". Those concerns were echoed by the chief medical officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, who told the committee that "we are looking at how we can try and attract companies back".

Vogelgrippe: Was wurde aus H5N1? - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Cancer virus discovery helped by delayed flight - BBC News
Epstein Barr virus // Wikipedia - It is best known as the cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). It is also associated with particular forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, gastric cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and conditions associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), such as hairy leukoplakia and central nervous system lymphomas. There is evidence that infection with EBV is associated with a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, especially dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Mers-Virus: Südkorea meldet 64 Infizierte und fünf Tote - SPIEGEL ONLINE
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-33038795 - Sixth Mers death in South Korea amid sharp rises in cases [...] More than 23 people were confirmed to have contracted the disease on Sunday, bringing the total to 87, health officials say. It is the biggest outbreak of Mers outside the Middle East. About 2,300 people have been placed under quarantine and nearly 1,900 schools have been closed. On Monday morning, a man in his 80s became the latest person to die of Mers-related illness in Daejeon, about 140km (87 miles) south of Seoul. // Mers is caused by a new type of coronavirus, a type of virus which includes the common cold and Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome). First cases emerged in the Middle East in 2012, and the first death in Saudi Arabia in June that year. Patients have a fever, cough and breathing difficulties, but Mers can also cause pneumonia and kidney failure. Approximately 36% of reported patients with Mers have died - there is no vaccine or specific treatment

Mers-Virus: Erste Tote in Südkorea - SPIEGEL ONLINE

>> !!! capitalism doesn't server humanity well in all and every aspect. !!! too many times had government to step in to save humanity from extinction.

Stanford biologist warns of early stages of Earth's 6th mass extinction event
In a new review of scientific literature and analysis of data published in Science, an international team of scientists cautions that the loss and decline of animals is contributing to what appears to be the early days of the planet's sixth mass biological extinction event. [...] And while previous extinctions have been driven by natural planetary transformations or catastrophic asteroid strikes, the current die-off can be associated to human activity, a situation that the lead author Rodolfo Dirzo, a professor of biology at Stanford, designates an era of "Anthropocene defaunation." // Book http://bit.ly/M47bEd "our own downfall at our own hands. Domino's are falling." - Guardian Series: http://www.theguardian.com/environment/series/sixth-extinction || http://bit.ly/1jzy1Ol Naomi Klein: This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate

And there is no doubt about the impact a poor night's sleep has on the whole body. The activity of hundreds of genes was altered when people's sleep was cut to less than six hours a day for a week. [...] There was a shift in understanding psychiatric disorders when it was shown autism, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia all shared several genetic risk factors.

Imagining the Post-Antibiotics Future — Medium
the FDA found (among many other results) that 65 percent of chicken breasts and 44 percent of ground beef carried bacteria resistant to tetracycline, and 11 percent of pork chops carried bacteria resistant to five classes of drugs. Meat transports those bacteria into your kitchen, if you do not handle it very carefully, and into your body if it is not thoroughly cooked—and resistant infections result. http://www.amazon.com/Rising-Plague-Bacteria-Dwindling-Arsenal/dp/1591027500 + http://cid.oxfordjournals.org/content/52/4/488.long

Avoiding Chicken To Avoid Bladder Infections - YouTube
Subscribe for free to Dr. Greger's videos at: http://bit.ly/nutritionfactsupdates DESCRIPTION: Handling chicken can lead to the colonization of one's colon with antibiotic resistant E. coli that may result in bladder infections in women. I originally explored this topic in Chicken Out of UTIs (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/chicken-out-of-utis/), but decided I needed to take a much deeper dive, especially in light of the cross-contamination issue, which I also previously touched on in Food Poisoning Bacteria Cross-Contamination (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/food-poisoning-bacteria-cross-contamination/) and Fecal Contamination of Sushi (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/fecal-contamination-of-sushi/). More on the insanity of feeding antibiotics to farm animals by the ton in: • Drug Residues in Meat (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/drug-residues-in-meat/) • Meat Mythcrushers (http://nutritionfacts.org/video/meat-mythcrushers/) • Lowering Dietary Antibiotic Intake (http://nutri...

BBC News - Battling the bacterial threat to modern medicine
"Antibiotics are losing their effectiveness at a rate that is both alarming and irreversible," said the Chief Medical Officer for England and Wales, Dame Sally Davies, earlier this month.

Microbiologist at the University of Birmingham, Prof Laura Piddock, told BBC's Newsnight that antibiotics are miracle drugs which underpin all areas of 21st Century medicine.

"But if we allow resistance to proliferate, then we undermine all of those medical advances," she said.

[...]

They are concerned that we overuse these drugs, most recently through online sales on the internet.

Prof Piddock explained that when you take an antibiotic you are having an impact not only on your health, but potentially on that of other people too.

The looming zoonotic danger – Global Public Square - CNN.com Blogs
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoonosis

We've seen an unprecedented rise in infectious diseases in recent decades, 75 percent of which are “zoonotic,” meaning they come from animals. About 300 new animal-to-human diseases have emerged in the last 60 years.

This summer, the International Livestock Research Institute released a report estimating that zoonotic diseases cause 2.5 billion cases of human illness each year and 2.7 million human deaths worldwide. Most of these illnesses and deaths are caused by diseases spread from farm animals.

Meanwhile, we’ve seen a dramatic spike in pork and poultry production. Tens to hundreds of thousands of caged animals under a single roof allow for zoonotic diseases to emerge, amplify and spread. Of all the emerging threats, the greatest concern is influenza, the only known virus with the potential to infect millions of people within months.
