Amazon, Silicon Valley, Unicorns and Decacorns - go go go even for broke. making things happen. winning the category. // vs Google and Facebook are those that won sort of automatically and had not that much internal and external pressure growing up. had not to fight surviving dot.com crash. Facebook sort of became a self-runner despite of its many missteps. Amazon had to fight all the way, and still has to fight because now it faces antitrust on both sides of the Atlantic. That creates, inadvertently, a specific culture that has been cited by personal examples in the NYT piece.

More help is urgently needed to help people with mental health problems stay in their jobs, says the government's chief medical officer, warning of the toll of mental illness on individuals and the economy. Dame Sally Davies said that around 70m working days were lost to mental illness last year, costing the economy £70 to £100bn. The number of working days lost to stress, depression and anxiety has risen by 24% since 2009, she says in her annual report. Yet 75% of people with diagnosable mental illness get no treatment at all.

PayPal too. And Jeff talks about being obsessive about the customer and inventing in the name of the customer (build a monopsony/monopoly). Gates made MSFT internally competitive (build a monopoly), working long hours, and as they were externally. Very different to FB and Google and their business & product position. // The recent claims about Amazon’s aggressive corporate culture were a cause of consternation to many – but plenty of others couldn't see what the problem was. So is a gentler, more relaxed office culture any better for employees? And is it even what they want?

A small number of companies have recognised this and are actively seeking these skills, especially in technological fields. In return, they are prepared to accommodate the social and sensory difficulties of autism – but many employers have yet to catch on that a few reasonable adjustments can make a huge difference to whether a potentially excellent worker stays or goes. How do you deal with mental health problems in the workplace?
The charity Mind has published research demonstrating that the “culture of fear and silence around mental health” can cost employers dearly, with 1 in 5 people taking days off due to stress, and 1 in 10 leaving positions because of stress. Mind also found that 56 per cent of employers surveyed said they would like to do more to improve staff wellbeing but didn’t t feel they had the right training or guidance to do so. That’s more than half, and it puts a big pin in Wax’s assertion that “employers will find a reason to fire you anyway”.

As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

Call for action on Scottish NHS 'failings' - BBC News
A body representing health professionals in Scotland has said major changes are needed to address "systemic failures" in the NHS. [...] The academy's report, Learning from Serious Failings in Care, identified key issues to be addressed, including: Poor leadership from senior staff. Poor leadership from NHS boards. Staff shortages. Poor staff morale [...] In addition, leadership and accountability were all too often sadly lacking and bullying endemic. [...] there is little evidence to suggest that we are tackling the underlying systemic failings which exist." [...] It also raised concerns about staff sickness, saying this could be an indication of deteriorating morale and should be used as "an early warning system".

Toyota's Top Female Executive Resigns After Arrest : The Two-Way : NPR
[crony capitalism and Wall Street chews them up and spits them out without regard ] // Toyota in a statement today said Hamp resigned Tuesday, and the company accepted her resignation "after considering the concerns and inconvenience that recent events have caused our stakeholders." As Scott reported June 19, "A total of 57 pills were discovered by Japanese customs officials on June 11 inside a package that Hamp mailed to herself from Kentucky, declaring the contents to be a necklace." Oxycodone is legal in the U.S. with a prescription. Hamp, who was arrested June 18, has denied the charges. She told authorities she did not think she had imported an illegal substance, police said. Prosecutors must decide whether to indict Hamp by July 8. She is in detention, but has not been charged with a crime.

Psychiatric disorders are among the most stigmatised of all, even in the 21st Century, and any large-scale efforts to "flush out" employees with mental disorders are likely to result in a reduced rather than a greater willingness to seek help. It is not "screening" for mental ill health at work that is needed but earlier recognition and better access to treatment. [...] At present, many people with a mental disorder are never diagnosed as such, and very few of those with more common disorders such as depression and anxiety receive any treatment. This would be a scandal in any other area of medicine. There is good evidence on what aspects of the workplace can lead to mental ill health. High demands, low control over your work, an imbalance between what you feel you put in and what you feel you get out, low levels of support - these have all been shown to lead to higher levels of mental illness at work.

You may know Slaughter from her 2012 viral story in The Atlantic titled " Why Women Still Can't Have It All." Many of the thoughts expressed in that article — that superhuman qualities are required to be both a perfect mother and a top professional. [...] Slaughter said workplaces need to be "customizable" so employees feel they can work to serve both their family in a caregiving role and the company in a competitive role. Men need to be allowed the same flexibility as women, she said. "We've revolutionized women's lives over my lifetime. If you're going to move women into the workplace, you have to move men into the home to get real equality. We haven't changed men's lives in nearly the ways we've changed women's." Slaughter's advice to women and men is to build a career through interval training, taking time to work very hard at your job and then slowing down to take time for your personal life, reminding everyone that it's not all about an immediate race to the top.

If you are wondering how Amazon can attract any talent at all, the answer is that 70% staff is college hires that were promised significant stock. The caveat is that it doesn't even start getting vested until after 3rd year. Most of the hires leaves in about 2 year (attrition rate is being rumored as much as 70%). So their secret is feeding the growth engine on huge swaths of college hires that can be lured for stock options in distant futures with expectation that they will just leave before vesting starts. The tech industry has a hero problem, and during my time there, Mozilla was no exception. Famously, Eich developed the JavaScript language in ten days, in order to meet a Netscape release deadline. This is a textbook example of how tech valorizes individual "heroes", always male, who can put in intense effort on a problem over a short period of time but not work with others on a solution in the long term. I have no doubt that Eich's work on JavaScript was solid, but I also see no reason to think that he was the only person who could have done the same thing. In fact, there are probably people who could have done better, but were not accorded the privileges in life needed for doing so. As far as I'm aware, Eich himself has maintained a humble attitude about his achievements, but the same can't be said of his fans. The developer then told me, a woman developer, that I was being "too emotional." Talk about double standards! When I got that email, it was the last in a long series of run-ins with sexist developers in my community. I couldn't work in this community anymore without the threat of harassment. I was done. Fed up. So I voted with my feet, and I decided to leave. [...] I was a minority in tech, someone that others looked up to as a leader in open source. And the stereotype threat was causing me to re-think leaving my toxic community. I finally accepted I had to leave my community in order to protect my mental health. In order to fully realize the vision of a technical workforce that serves the needs of our diverse populations, we will need to ensure that all workers, regardless of their background, experience level, or motivation for entering the field, have access to the resources they need to achieve mastery in their profession. We need not wait for future generations to pass through Computer Science programs and coding bootcamps to construct the environments in which our current and future colleagues will find success. Organizations can take on practices that encourage mutual instruction, facilitate knowledge sharing, and produce safety mechanisms for problems that might arise from knowledge gaps. Code review, pair programming, coding standards, practice fields, retrospectives, testing, and monitoring are all practices that are well known to support these aims, and many can be used specifically with an eye towards developing and growing emerging talent.

Even participants who achieved the daily recommended levels of physical activity were at the same risk as those who spent their day sitting. “[The results] indicate that the increased risk of cancer seen in individuals with prolonged time spent sedentary is not explained by the mere absence of physical activity in those persons,” the researchers say.

Die psychische Gesundheit litt jedoch dauerhaft unter der gestiegenen beruflichen Belastung. Sehr verbreitet waren infolgedessen Nervosität und Unruhezustände. Trotz dauerhaften Einkommenssteigerungen und höherem sozialen Status überwiegen demnach langfristig die negativen Effekte von vermehrtem Stress und längeren Arbeitszeiten.

In a study of ten of the largest European countries, Britain comes last followed by Ireland, with France and Spain topping the table.

Though British households enjoy the highest income, at £35,730 a year, £10,325 higher than the European average, British families have to contend with a high cost of living, with fuel, food and alcohol all costing more than the European average.
