It has to do with something economists call 'the backward bending supply curve of labour.' As with much of economics, this gymnastic-sounding graphic concept is much simpler than it sounds. On the y-axis is pay: on the x-axis hours worked. At low levels of pay, people have to work long hours to make ends meet. Pay them more, give them more security, and they want more time to themselves. Pay them lots, and they offer fewer hours because they want more leisure time, and the opportunity to spend all that moolah. That's where the curve bends back. So their secret is feeding the growth engine on huge swaths of college hires that can be lured for stock options in distant futures with expectation that they will just leave before vesting starts. American Schools Are Training Kids for a World That Doesn't Exist | WIRED
Our kids learn within a system of education devised for a world that increasingly does not exist. To become a chef, a lawyer, a philosopher or an engineer, has always been a matter of learning what these professionals do, how and why they do it, and some set of general facts that more or less describe our societies and our selves. We pass from kindergarten through twelfth grade, from high school to college, from college to graduate and professional schools, ending our education at some predetermined stage to become the chef, or the engineer, equipped with a fair understanding of what being a chef, or an engineer, actually is and will be for a long time. We “learn,” and after this we “do.” We go to school and then we go to work. This approach does not map very well to personal and professional success in America today. Learning and doing have become inseparable in the face of conditions that invite us to discover.

See the thing is, people are likely upset because they look at Reddit as the anti-establishment — that if these guys (aka Reddit) can rise to the top without becoming a Yahoo or Facebook, then there’s hope for all the people in Salt Lake City, Nashville, Atlanta, and every other middle-of-nowhere city in the country with a decent Internet connection. People who live outside of Silicon Valley can still be all-stars in the technology world — and Reddit is a big part of that. So people were understandably rattled, and probably feeling more than a little defensive about this issue. (That’s not to say there wasn’t also plenty of healthy discussion about business philosophies of remote workers, too.)

The tech industry has a hero problem, and during my time there, Mozilla was no exception. Famously, Eich developed the JavaScript language in ten days, in order to meet a Netscape release deadline. This is a textbook example of how tech valorizes individual "heroes", always male, who can put in intense effort on a problem over a short period of time but not work with others on a solution in the long term. I have no doubt that Eich's work on JavaScript was solid, but I also see no reason to think that he was the only person who could have done the same thing. In fact, there are probably people who could have done better, but were not accorded the privileges in life needed for doing so. As far as I'm aware, Eich himself has maintained a humble attitude about his achievements, but the same can't be said of his fans. [...] Tacit acceptance of silencing and of abuse of power runs throughout our culture, but that doesn't make it okay in the specific instance of tech culture. [... >>]

In order to fully realize the vision of a technical workforce that serves the needs of our diverse populations, we will need to ensure that all workers, regardless of their background, experience level, or motivation for entering the field, have access to the resources they need to achieve mastery in their profession. We need not wait for future generations to pass through Computer Science programs and coding bootcamps to construct the environments in which our current and future colleagues will find success. Organizations can take on practices that encourage mutual instruction, facilitate knowledge sharing, and produce safety mechanisms for problems that might arise from knowledge gaps. Code review, pair programming, coding standards, practice fields, retrospectives, testing, and monitoring are all practices that are well known to support these aims, and many can be used specifically with an eye towards developing and growing emerging talent.

Spätestens nach drei Jahren war die Karriere-Euphorie dann komplett verflogen: Trotz mehr Geld und höherem Status gingen Jobzufriedenheit, gefühlte Arbeitsplatzsicherheit und das Empfinden angemessener Bezahlung wieder auf das Niveau vor der Beförderung zurück.

Die psychische Gesundheit litt jedoch dauerhaft unter der gestiegenen beruflichen Belastung. Sehr verbreitet waren infolgedessen Nervosität und Unruhezustände. Trotz dauerhaften Einkommenssteigerungen und höherem sozialen Status überwiegen demnach langfristig die negativen Effekte von vermehrtem Stress und längeren Arbeitszeiten.

Global Worker Surge Was Behind Recession - Real Time Economics - WSJ
A new paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, by Ravi
Jagannathan, Mudit Kapoor and Ernst Schaumburg, argues imbalances caused by a jump in the world’s labor force are the key reason for the global recession.

“The large increase in the developed world’s labor supply, triggered by geo-political events and technological innovations, is the major underlying cause of the global macro economic imbalances that led to the great recession,” the paper said. “The inability of existing institutions in the U.S. and the rest of the world to cope with this shock set the stage for the great recession.”

As workers from developing nations moved to compete on the economic stage, the money they made and the world’s inability to absorb that new wealth helped fuel the crisis.

The paper’s authors warn that attempts to reform banking oversight and the downsides of ample liquidity won’t fix the real problem facing the global economy.
