Tax evaders exposed: why the super-rich are even richer than we thought | Inequality | The Guardian
The higher one moves up the wealth distribution, the higher the probability of hiding assets [...] More broadly, the key to successfully fighting tax evasion is to change the incentives for the providers of wealth concealment services. Over the last few years, a number of banks have pleaded guilty in the US to criminal conspiracies to defraud the Internal Revenue Service – yet they were able to keep their banking licences, and the fines they had to pay paled in comparison to their profits. A more ambitious approach would put criminal organisations out of business. If tax evasion ceases to pay, it will disappear.

The Privatising Industry in Europe
Do you wonder why the 'Troika' persists in its privatisation agenda despite the evidence of its failures and the growing economic and social costs?
The report “The Privatising Industry in Europe”, written by Sol Trumbo Vila and Matthijs Peters for the Transnational Institute, TNI, suggests two possible motives and shows who the ‪#‎BigWinners‬ of those privatisations are. - https://www.tni.org/en/publication/the-privatising-industry-in-europe - The rationale put forward by advocates of privatisation does not stand up to the evidence. Privatisation has failed to provide promised revenue as only profitable firms are being sold and consistently at undervalued prices. Meanwhile the latest research by the IMF and by European universities show that there is no evidence that the privatised firms are more efficient than state-owned firms. [...] Privatisation in Europe has encouraged a growth in corruption,

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Sports Direct is a reflection of the modern British economy | Letters | Business | The Guardian
Sports Direct seems to be a metaphor for the modern British economy. “The conscious strategy would seem to be to rely on cheap labour rather than costly investment,” as your editorial (11 December) says. It also illustrates the epidemic growth of workforce insecurity which plagues a nation scarred by the rise of the precariat. Britain is rapidly becoming the sweatshop of Europe, and this, along with bubbles in consumer debt and house prices, has been a major part in such anaemic recovery as we have seen over the past five years. Changing the benefit rules for EU migrants no effect on migration - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
[ Evidence: Tories working on the fringes again to satisfy stern neocons and potential UKIP voters. Always the promise to reduce migration with new quick fix schemes. Voters demands are symptoms of ill democracy, democracy for the rich. Its always the others ... not those on top of the ladder having party time. ] Sir Stephen Nickell, one of the three members of the OBR’s budget responsibility committee, was asked about this, and this is what he said: Changing the benefit rules for EU migration so that they become more difficult to obtain - you are asking me what impact that is likely to have. In my opinion: not much. I am prepared to say that any changes to benefit rules are unlikely to have a huge impact on migration flows. But to go further and start trying to analyse the actual consequences is not within our remit.

Becoming radicalised – and keeping a secret - BBC News
Some of these individuals identified with an organisation such as IS or al-Qaeda while others followed their own extremist beliefs and underwent a more personal form of radicalisation. [...] Still in many cases individuals are drawn to IS or other extremist groups because they're unhappy in their own lives and are looking for a cause that's bigger than themselves. "The radicalisation process has been triggered by a personal crisis - the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job," says Indiana State University's Mark Hamm, the author of The Spectacular Few, a book about extremism.

HMRC still failing taxpayers, say MPs - BBC News
HMRC's record of 11 prosecutions for offshore tax evasion in the past five years as "woefully inadequate". Despite being handed a list of 3,600 British people who hid money in Switzerland, the tax collectors have prosecuted just one person involved. Instead, the tax collectors have offered reduced penalties to people who come forward with information about money they have hidden overseas, something the committee said was no substitute for the "deterrent effect" of prosecution. It said wealthy people who hide money offshore needed to be dealt with "robustly". The MPs said HMRC had also ignored some of their previous recommendations. [...] 11,000 full-time equivalent posts being cut since 2010. "It has been abundantly clear for years that the department has cut too many staff and that services are suffering," said PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka. "The department needs major investment backed by a real political commitment to tackle tax evasion and avoidance as an alternative to more

What about all the ballyhoo about manufacturing jobs coming back to America? Well, some have. But they pay lousy wages. The average wages of production and non-supervisory employees in manufacturing are lower today than they were in 1985, when adjusted for inflation. [...] Bottom line: Most Americans have got zilch out of this recovery. In fact, they’re worse off now than they were in 2000. Meanwhile, the top 0.1 percent is doing fabulously well. More and more people are concluding the game is rigged -- which it is. No one should be surprised at the surge in populist anger on the left and the right.

Henriette Reker mit Messer attackiert - Aufstand? Fehlanzeige. - SPIEGEL ONLINE
ufstand der Anständigen? Fehlanzeige.

Europe is becoming an undemocratic continent where force matters more than law | Comment is free | The Guardian
Only banks, global corporations and the superrich have any power against this faceless semi-superstate [...] In the past year, on two occasions when tested, European solidarity fell apart. [...] The real power, meanwhile, sits with large corporations, banks and elites. And here’s the strangest thing: for all the power concentrated at the top, the EU lacks the will to operate purposefully in the multipolar global power system. We know, roughly, what the US wants. Ditto for China and Russia. Ask what Europe wants – in Ukraine, Syria or the Arctic circle – and you’ll draw a blank. In a multipolar world, whose chaos zones are expanding, effective states with clear diplomatic aims and red lines matter.

Three City Link directors to face criminal charges over firm's collapse | Business | The Guardian
[ sticking the bill to the state, also lowering the insurance bill by employing drivers as self-employed (have to pay their own insurance, vehicle, vehicle tax, maintenance, etc) and not even making minimum wage (per hour income) << circumventing minimum wage payments and insurance payments. no morality. ] The Insolvency Service (IS) declined to comment on why the department was suddenly using its powers under the act. But the action comes after the government has been forced to pay out millions in compensatory payments to staff made redundant without proper consultation. The cases have emerged amid a government investigation into the issue of redundancy consultations in insolvencies and the potentially clashing demands of employment and insolvency law.

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

Robert Reich: One of the Most Important Differences Between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton - It all comes down to Wall Street.
on.fb.me/1LsCcNT - Finally, tonight, the American public will have a chance to hear the truth about what's happened to our economy and our democracy. Unlike the Republican debates -- which have been circuses of dishonesty, bigotry, and braggadocio -- tonight's Democratic debate offers an opportunity to set out the real challenge: turning a society that's become more rigidly stratified and oligarchic than it has in over a century into one that's inclusive and democratic. Most of the Democratic candidates agree on the problem. Listen for the boldness of their policies. But also know that good policies won't be enough. We need a candidate capable of forging and fueling a movement sufficiently powerful to overcome the regressive forces of big money. So listen also for their passion, their wisdom, and their capacity to move America. What will you be listening for?

BBC One - Panorama, Tough Justice in Britain - Texas Style
As the UK's imprisonment rate remains the highest in western Europe, Panorama joins Michael Gove - the man in charge of British prisons - on a fact-finding mission in Texas. 'Hang 'em high' Texas is not the first place you might look for lessons in criminal justice - they execute more people and lock up more offenders than anywhere else in America. But now this conservative state is the unlikely centre of a rehabilitation-led revolution in prison reform that's sweeping through the US. Crime is down, prisoner numbers have fallen and, on top of this, they have cut costs. Are there valuable lessons to be learned here, and are UK politicians really ready to dole out some Texan justice?

How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. We must do everything possible to reclaim our democracy.

Volkswagen Congress Hearing: Emissions scandal - watch live - YouTube
VW USA subsidiary CEO Michael Horn. // 'VW the people's car.' 36:40 - I had no understanding what a defeat device is & that it could be installed to cheat emission tests. [<< Symptom of being a conglomerate! Corporate Culture & Values.] min 38:09 - Is hardware, software & even has to do something with the fuel tank. In some models (gen 2) its just software & a sensor. // 49:20 - framing of the answer with EPA (influenced?), cars on the road right now, even they are not passing emissions test, "are legal & safe to drive for the owners." // min 57 NOx, air pollution. 'compensation will be part of discussion'. 40 times than allowable limit. // 1:11:00 - according to him, @ the current state of investigations, this was out of the engine-drivetrain-engineering/software/emissions department within VW. Was not a corporate executive decision from the top. [My 2 cents: more likely decision was made within those departments due to pressure from top to make the test pass happen. << 1:51:00]
