Scots firm introduces six hour working day (From Herald Scotland)
A marketing firm has become the first company in Scotland to introduce a six hour working day for its staff after being inspired by Sweden. The scheme, which was introduced by Glasgow firm Senshi allows staff to work from 9.30am to 3.30pm instead of the traditional 9am-5pm. The new working hours, which the firm launched this month, aim to improve staff wellbeing and efficiency. [...] "I think people are too stressed these days and the average working day is far too long. "When you do an eight-hour day, you don't work the full eight hours, your mind is incapable of concentrating for that amount of time. So we have been trialling it for the past few days and so far so good." Under the new scheme, staff at Senshi, who were nominated for a Herald Digital Business Award in 2015, take five minute screen breaks every 45 minutes and take a 30 minute lunch.

The problem with automation isn’t technology. The problem is capitalism. // [ Deflationary pressure, 3bn people in developing world and frontier markets unemployed, waiting to join workforce. ] [ who buys the gadgets and widgets when half the world is unemployed ] // This time, as Martin Ford argues in Rise of The Robots, education and upscaling won’t help us. There will simply be fewer jobs to go around, as everything from accountancy to journalism will be done faster, cheaper and more efficiently by machines. The result, as Jerry Kaplan agrees in Humans Need Not Apply, is that billions will be left destitute – unless we radically rethink our way of keeping people fed.

Why going home from work on time is good for you – and your employer | News | The Guardian
There is a lot of evidence that the number of hours worked does not equate to how much you are getting done. With the OECD countries above, there is a statistically significant negative relationship between the average hours worked and the amount of money made per hour worked. In other words, the countries with longer working hours tend to have less economically productive workers. In Japan, several firms including the operators of clothing retailer Uniqlo are moving to cut the number of hours employees work. So don’t feel bad about clocking off on time – you might actually get more done.

As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

Professor Wang optimistically forecasts an official four-day work week in China by 2030, but I suspect any changes to the current system are far from ever becoming a reality; our corporate-dominated culture would never stand for it, and the Ministry of Commerce would certainly be unwelcoming of the suggestion. Still, the obvious desire by China's workforce for more time off should be heeded by our leaders as an indication of our collective exhaustion after nearly two decades of full-tilt economic growth.

Google to Make Security Guards Employees, Rather Than Contractors - Digits - WSJ
In a move that could reverberate around Silicon Valley, Google plans to hire more than 200 security guards as its own employees, rather than through an outside contractor. The guards will be eligible for the same benefits as other Googlers, including health insurance, retirement benefits, on-site medical services, leave for new parents and more. The move comes amid rising concerns about income disparities in the San Francisco Bay Area. A think tank with ties to organized labor issued a report in August highlighting the differences in pay, benefits and working conditions between tech-company employees and service workers such as security guards, janitors and landscapers who primarily work for outside contractors. [...] The August think tank report found that the median hourly wage is $14 an hour for security guards in Santa Clara County – home to Google and scores of other tech companies. By contrast, the median wage for software developers is roughly $63 an hour.
