What has the Women’s March accomplished, beyond mere visibility? | Jessa Crispin | Opinion | The Guardian
Women’s March // Advertisement

Since its inception, Women’s March has faced criticism by many within the feminist community. The March and its participants, we heard from many critics, marginalized Native women, disabled women, women of color, trans women and Jewish women to present a very safe, white, middle of the road protest. [...] Others called the organization out for not having any real agenda, and for focusing solely on what it was against – the Trump administration and Republican control of Congress – and not what it was for. This is a common problem for organizations that begin as protest movements.

UK towns ‘polarised’ by rise of far right | UK news | The Guardian
But Khan said her investigations had detected a sense Britain was on the cusp of a fresh wave of rightwing extremism: “This backs up what experts have been telling me – that we are seeing a new wave of the far right: modernised, professionalised and growing; supported by a frightening amount of legal online extremist material.” [...] Metropolitan police’s Neil Basu, told the home affairs select committee that far-right extremists and Islamists were “feeding each other” and that police were currently presiding over 700 live terrorism investigations. [...] Home Office data shows that white people now constitute the largest proportion of arrested terrorism suspects for the first time in 13 years. Meanwhile, the number of people referred to the government’s counter-extremism programme, Prevent, because of concerns over rightwing extremism has grown by more than a quarter.

Online abuse: 'existing laws too fragmented and don’t serve victims' | UK news | The Guardian
“There are crimes now taking place – the malicious use of intimate photographs for example – which we never would have imagined as an offence when I was a PC in the 80s. It’s not just the nature of it, it is the sheer volume. “The levels of abuse that now take place within the internet are on a level we never really expected. If we did try to deal with all of it we would clearly be swamped.” [...] Earlier in the week, it emerged that the Crown Prosecution Service in England and Wales has turned to Twitter for help as it faces a worrying increase in the use of social media by perpetrators to commit crimes against women and girls, including rape, domestic abuse and blackmail.

Obama to take unilateral action on US gun violence - BBC News
In his first weekly address of 2016, Mr Obama said he would meet Attorney General Loretta Lynch to discuss actions he could take. He said he was using his executive powers as president because the US Congress has failed to address the problem. Analysts say there will be a backlash from gun activists and Republicans. But Mr Obama told Americans that he had received too many letters from parents, and teachers, and children, to sit around and do nothing. "We know that we can't stop every act of violence," the president said. "But what if we tried to stop even one? What if Congress did something - anything - to protect our kids from gun violence?" He has admitted that his inability to win Congressional backing for what he called "common sense gun laws" was the greatest frustration of his presidency.

Podcast Extra: After Oregon - On The Media
In 2011, Michael Luo of The New York Times was writing a series of articles about gun laws across the country. He requested data from Oregon officials about the state's gun license holders, but when pro-gun rights groups learned he was trying to get the information they lobbied the state legislature to shield the data. Within months a new law had passed: all of the records, formerly in the public domain, were now private. Bob talks with Luo about why the data is important and why shielding it can making searching for answers after a tragedy so difficult.  Bob also revisits his conversation with Tom Teves, whose son Alex was killed in the shooting rampage in Aurora, Colorado, about his efforts to keep the press from turning mass killers into media icons with his group, NoNotoriety.

'Clare's Law' to be extended across Scotland - BBC News
A trial scheme which allows people to be told if their partner has been violent in the past is to be extended across Scotland. The six-month trial in Aberdeen and Ayrshire saw 22 people warned that their partners had a history of domestic abuse. The Scottish government is to confirm that the scheme will now be rolled out across the country. The disclosure scheme is known as Clare's Law. It was named after Clare Brown, who was strangled and set on fire by George Appleton, her violent and obsessive former boyfriend, in Salford, Greater Manchester, in 2009. Appleton had a history of violence and harassment against women which Ms Brown did not know about.

Sexism is making women sick | Jessica Valenti | Comment is free | The Guardian
A study published this month in the journal Sex Roles reveals that some of the sexism women face – from catcalling and sexual harassment to sexual objectification and violence – makes women generally more fearful and anxious. The researchers from the University of Missouri-Kansas and Georgia State University found a substantive “link between physical safety concerns and psychological distress”. We already know that violence causes trauma, and that people who are bullied and harassed are more likely to be depressed throughout their lives. Research shows that children who live in violent neighborhoods are more prone to developing PTSD, and that the daily fear they experience changes their psychological make-up so drastically that nightmares, flashbacks and disassociation are common. [...] “It’s normalized, but it has such an effect on your life – women constrain their behaviors every day.”

I hoped I might inspire others to share, and that forming these connections would assist us all in healing. [...] I have had my character and credibility questioned at every turn. I have been attacked online with violent and misogynistic language. Reporters have attempted to uncover the identity of my attacker despite my sincerest attempts to protect this information. My work has been torn apart in an attempt to prove I am a liar, or worse, a deviant myself. My friends and family have been contacted. Articles have heralded “Lena Dunham’s shocking confession.” I have been made to feel, on multiple occasions, as though I am to blame for what happened."

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby says faith is often misused and can be a hook to hang complex issues that can lead to violence. He has just embarked on a tour of four African countries, all of which have been touched by vicious and bloody conflict - South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Burundi. He told HARDtalk's Zeinab Badawi he rejected any suggestion conflicts were simply caused by disagreements between different faiths and said other factors like ethnicity and economic conditions were very important.
