GPs offered cash to refer fewer people to hospital | Society | The Guardian
NHS Coastal West Sussex CCG has offered to give groups of practices working together in its area 50% of savings made from GPs referring fewer patients for dermatology care, ear, nose and throat treatment in the community, and minor surgery and wound closure. [...] Peter Swinyard, chair of the , said: “From a patient perspective it means GPs are paid to not look after them. It’s a serious dereliction of duty, influenced by CCGs trying to balance their books.” [...] would let hospitals treat the most needy cases. NHS Grampian puts cap on non-urgent surgery over winter - Evening Express
NHS Grampian has confirmed it is only booking category one and two patients, who require surgery within a month or within three months respectively, in January and February.

The health board said the move was part of its winter plans and there would be exceptions where surgeries do not impact on beds. [...] It follows a row in October after NHS Tayside announced it had put on hold all planned, non-urgent operations for three weeks over the festive period. NHS faces even worse winter crisis than last year, watchdog warns | Society | The Guardian
In an update on how the NHS in England performed between July and September, NHSI said hospitals did not succeed in freeing up the target of 2,000-3,000 beds by September, which would have helped them cope with the extra winter demand.

NHS leaders and the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, told hospitals in the spring that they needed to reduce the number of beds occupied due to “delayed transfers of care” – patients who are fit to leave but cannot safely be discharged – to 3.5% of their total number by September. Psychiatrist vacancies 'double in four years' in England - BBC News
Attracting students
Prof Burn said the rise in vacancies was down to the difficulty in recruiting psychiatrists.

She said medical schools need to broaden their pool of applicants in order to get more psychiatrists into the workplace.
"We are keen that medical schools should take in people studying psychology A-level - because they will be more likely to end up as psychiatrists."
It takes 13 years to train as a consultant psychiatrist.

England and Wales death rate rise linked to longer stays in hospital | Society | The Guardian
The sharp rise in the death rate in recent years could be down to the number of people being kept too long in hospital, inadequate social care and austerity-linked pressures on the NHS, academics say.

About 7,800 extra deaths a year in England and Wales are being caused by the dramatic increase in the number of people being forced to stay in hospital longer than necessary because they cannot safely be discharged, it is claimed.

NHS slams big pharma in High Court row over drug pricing powers
The row is over powers introduced in April giving NHS England the right to ration costly medicines, including if they are expected to cost more than £20m in any of their first three years of use. Previously medicines signed off as clinically effective and good value for money by public drug price regulator Nice had to be automatically funded and made available by the NHS within three months. [...] The drugmakers argue the changes will limit patients’ access to cutting-edge treatments, particularly for rare diseases where the benefits are large but the patient numbers are small. In their claim the drug firms argue Nice acted beyond its powers to introduce the so-called budget impact test and failed to consult properly with industry on the detail of the proposals.

NHS accused of keeping secret its plans to cut services | Society | The Guardian
STP + CEP + CCG's discretion what and who is more important // The NHS has been accused of keeping the public in the dark about controversial plans to plug a £250m funding gap by rationing services.

The crowdfunded campaign group 38 Degrees submitted freedom of information (FOI) requests to the government, NHS leaders as well as trusts and clinical commissioning groups in the 13 areas affected but all except two refused to release details of planned changes.

Leaked proposals from three areas have already revealed plans including downgrading or closing A&Es and extending waiting times for operations, and 38 Degrees says the public is entitled to know what else is in store.

If our government won’t act to save our NHS this winter, this is what we must do | openDemocracy
Theresa May’s team has adopted an ostrich-style response to the rising cash crisis and its likely impact this winter. But it’s clear that many of her MPs, fearing they could lose their reduced majorities at the next election, are pressing hard behind the scenes for a reprieve for local services.

MPs have already forced significant retreats from hospital downgrades in north Devon and Essex. Cabinet minister Andrea Leadsom has backed calls for a reprieve for hospital services at Banbury’s Horton General, and may yet have something to say about Oxfordshire’s latest bed closures.

Fall in planned operations in Scottish hospitals - BBC News
7% drop in planned ops (non-urgent). The health board has blamed problems recruiting staff. [...] Fewer beds being available in hospitals for patients having scheduled operations has been cited as one of the reasons why the number of procedures was down. Official figures show the total number of hospital beds available in Scotland in March dropped by 382 from 22,240 to 21,858. [...] A spokeswoman for NHS Grampian said: "The reduction in the number of procedures taking place is a direct result of the challenges we have faced in staffing.
"This does not just cover theatres themselves but also vital pre- and post-operative care.
"We continue to actively recruit to a range of posts but - in common with many Scottish boards - are facing a shortage of suitably qualified candidates in some areas."

Unpaid carers save economy almost £60bn each year - BBC News
The ONS links the rise in unpaid care by family members to "a rapidly ageing population and a higher life expectancy".
"At age 65 a man will spend, on average, 44% of the rest of his life in poorer health, and a woman, 47% of her life," says the ONS document.
Women are more likely than men to be informal carers, with women making up 59% of carers. [...] The value of unpaid care outweighs the amounts spent on formal social care, the document suggests.
