Nasty Gal Layoffs Hit 10 Percent of Staff | Re/code
Online fashion retailer Nasty Gal has laid off 10 percent of its staff, as the purveyor of edgy women’s clothing cuts costs amid an uncertain financing and retail environment. CEO Sheree Waterson told the company in an email that the cuts were necessary as the “market in which we operate is changing, both in retail broadly and apparel specifically.” Nineteen employees across several departments were let go. Nasty Gal also laid off some staff in 2014. The layoffs underscore the difficulty mature e-commerce startups can encounter as they transition from being a hot new brand to the long slog of building a more traditional retail business. In short, building a retail brand is really hard and technology can only afford you so many shortcuts along the way. Online beauty brand BirchBox announced layoffs of 15 percent of its staff last week, as startups in e-commerce tighten belts as investors become more wary of unprofitable growth.

I had alcohol-related breast cancer. Here’s why I still drink | Joanna Moorhead | Opinion | The Guardian
The chief medical officer advises women to think about cancer when having a drink. But if I did that every time I had a glass of wine, I think I’d feel the cancer had won [...] I guess what it comes down to is quite simply the importance of enjoying life. When I had cancer, I discovered that I didn’t just want to survive; I wanted to have fun, to make the most of every single day, and to enjoy happy occasions and meals with my friends and family. [...] drinking wine, beer or tequila adds a dimension to social occasions that I rather enjoy. And somehow it feels to me that it wasn’t worth surviving cancer if I’m going to limit my life to thinking, every time someone offered me a glass of something, about my breast cancer and the likelihood of it returning. [...] Life is too short to cut out something you enjoy in moderation, [ picking up the words from the food lobby, heart disease and cancer in moderation. sprinkling in doubt. to continue that lifestyle. do you say asbestos in mod? ]

Apple, Samsung and Sony face child labour claims - BBC News
Human rights organisation Amnesty has accused Apple, Samsung and Sony, among others, of failing to do basic checks to ensure minerals used in their products are not mined by children. [...] "It is a major paradox of the digital era that some of the world's richest, most innovative companies are able to market incredibly sophisticated devices without being required to show where they source raw materials for their components," said executive director of Afrewatch (Africa Resources Watch) Emmanuel Umpula. "The abuses in mines remain out of sight and out of mind because in today's global marketplace, consumers have no idea about the conditions at the mine, factory and assembly line. We found that traders are buying cobalt without asking questions about how and where it was mined."

Economy concerns as household debt rises to £40bn in latest figures | Business | The Guardian
Families are expected to run up £40bn of debt this year, sparking fears about Britain’s economic recovery. [...] (OBR) forecasts have found that households have moved from a surplus of £67bn in 2010, the year the coalition took power, to a £40bn deficit this year. Unsustainable borrowing is on course to near the levels reached in the run-up to the 2008 financial crash, according to Labour. Seema Malhotra, the shadow chief secretary to the Treasury, said: “George Osborne is relying on millions of British families going further into debt to hit his growth targets. [ as projected by economists, that household had to take up debt, shifting debt burden off the public balance sheet, when austerity plans were revealed together with LibDems, to meet growth targets/estimates, back then. same w decistions to increase student loans, convert grants into loan ie for nursing, remove allowances and grants. same w the green bank. shifting items off the balance sheet. and underinvestment. ]

The roof is being fixed but beware the house crashing beneath it | Business | The Guardian
Consumer spending is driving economic growth but household debt and the house price-income ratio is at a record high. Be afraid [...] It is worth recalling that when Osborne became chancellor five and a half years ago that he had two big objectives. The first was to repair the hole in the public finances, which is still very much a work in progress. The other was to shift the centre of gravity of the economy back towards making things for export. This remains a pipedream. [...] Despite the welcome pickup in business investment, the main driver of growth has been consumer spending, which has been boosted by low interest rates, the fall in inflation caused by lower oil prices, and a modest acceleration in earnings. [...] “not the ideal shape for the recovery” and it can say that again. The current recovery looks like all the previous recoveries. Why I'm buying nothing for a year – no clothes, no holidays, no coffee ... | Money | The Guardian
I’m not the first person to attempt this. There is a growing movement of people who are turning their back on consumerism and purchasing possessions in favour of buying experiences and travelling the world. In the US, the Minimalists have encouraged people to live with less, while in Canada Cait Flanders – who blogs at Blonde on a Budget – transformed her finances with a shopping ban. In the UK, Kath Kelly lived on just £1 a day for a year in order to buy her brother a lavish wedding gift.

Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Self-definition has become intertwined with social media. We are all here for each other. I wake up staring at my phone. I fall asleep to the glow of the very same screen.

The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Laurie Anderson: 'Capitalism is a disaster for human relations' | Film | The Guardian
The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. Someone else has a bigger plus sign over their heads. Digitaler Burnout: "Zu viel Smartphone macht unglücklich" - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ portion USE time! 3x1hr?

Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

Hysterical consumerism ruins food. And holidays. And books | Emma Brockes | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ Brand dilution (because there is a queue of brands waitng to be exploited and sold out, although millenials don't see sell-outs as bad anymore ...) vs ] Brand extension, the capitalist form of mission creep, has been around for a long time and, although it’s hit or miss – Richard Branson’s Virgin Brides springs to mind – it makes a certain amount of commercial sense. More depressing is what it says about consumer appetites, a sugar-in-everything infantilization of tastes that suggests if you love something, you must have it infused in your tea or printed on a blanket so you can drag it around with you everywhere. [...] This transference of one good thing to another, unrelated good thing is part of the peculiarly American urge to satisfy all appetites at once and it’s eroding the idea of pleasure as context-specific.

Mike Ueberroth - Mobile Uploads
Malala Yousafzai & Kylie Jenner. Both turned 18 recently. One was given a Ferrari and spent thousands on facial modification. The other was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize, survived a gun shot to the face by the Taliban due to corruption in her country, and opened a school for Syrian refugees to combat the lack of education for youth around the world. What's upsetting is the media is only covering one of these stories as "breaking news." Share the post to spread real love and inspiration across the youth of the world. Last thing to note, Malala is infinitely more beautiful! **re-posted // hard things are hard for a reason! // what happens to the cognitive surplus what everyone talked about at the turn of the century? its being eaten by consumption pattern - on the mobile homescreen (Entertainment, utility, Gaming, Escapeism, snacking).

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software.
// retweet and facebook like/share does not correlate with personal action! // long-lasting change comes from intrinsic motivation (self education leads to taking action one self). Millennials Can't Afford Cars, and Are Fine With That - Bloomberg View
As somebody who wondered in a column last week whether people in developed countries were perhaps learning that they no longer needed as much stuff as they used to, and whether this might lead to big shifts in the global economy, I read on with great interest. [...] The changes in young adults' consumption habits have clearly been influenced by economic forces. But economic forces shape societal attitudes, too. I also don't see much sign that these economic forces are about to reverse. Both these things can be true: The median 25-to-34-year-old has less to spend, and is less interested in spending it on a car.

Why has Apple broken its vow of silence? - BBC News
re-pricing // would Steve Jobs have done thing?! Not back then. But this time is different. This time, Apples future growth is in China, India, emerging market, emerging middle class of the developing world with western aspirations - consumption (type patter, meat and fancy electronics with a recognisable brand behind it (so ppl can put you into the category of 'made it' - status anxiety)., not in the western world with new products. And I think he took this as an opportunity to transmit that and his confidence into the future for apple - through those lines, 'sent to a worrying investor.' Apple is one of the richest, most valuable things America got. America (Apple) has confidence into the future to sell to the emerging middle class. As much as warren buffet believes in the industrial future strength, re-emergence, to make products affordable/competitively through cheap energy that USA has access now. // &! bit.ly/1JjFsXx talking abt Apples exposure 2 China & Co. Why Has Apple Been Poaching Fashion Execs? | Fashion-Tech | BoF
Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

Celebrity lifestyles for sale | Life and style | The Guardian
It started with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop – now everyone from Zooey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon to Lena Dunham is selling you their way of life [...] Did this have a bearing on how they then responded to the way the story unfolded across the media? This is the less quantifiable benefit of the celebrity lifestyle brand: the emotional yank of feeling as if you’re part of a community, albeit one trying hard to sell you sunglasses. To be a fan today is to constantly be sold to, but also to constantly be questioning and scrutinising the celebrity’s choices. Fans are “polytheistic”, says Auerbach. “They have more choice and want to ‘follow’ a range of celebs who appeal to different parts of their personalities.” The aspirational foodie on Instagram, the interiors on Pinterest, the “sassy” motherhood blogger, the feminist tweeter. “It’s less about individual stars,” Auerbach adds, “and more about constellations.”

// Book Lars Geiges, Stine Marg, Franz Walter: Pegida. Die schmutzige Seite der Zivilgesellschaft?

Chalmers Johnson, author of Blowback, Sorrows of Empire and Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic , talks about the similarities in the decline of the Roman and Soviet empires and the signs that the U.S. empire is exhibiting the same symptoms: overextension, corruption and the inability to reform [ in face of global change and internal ideology.] - min 15 + fiscal overstretch that does not serve people (economic multiplier, ie NSA, military bases, personnel, and long-term obligations ie pension and benefits) ... and unable to change bc of ideology married with identity (the American Dream is still alive and this country is fair and meritocratic) as well unable to keep up with global economic competition as a whole (take out Silicon Valley). & unable to smell crony capitalism (no shared economic interest), corruption and bribery when its showing up (ie TTIP, NAFTA and co.) &! Is Spotify doomed because of Apple Music? No — Spotify’s been doomed from the start | PandoDaily
Spotify is really the only legitimate competitor left. But its fate, like that of every streaming music service, is also subject to forces outside of its control — forces that are guided by the three-headed hydra of Warner, Universal, and Sony. [...] Although Apple Music and Spotify’s paid tier offer perks that free subscriptions do not — namely, full mobile access and no ads between songs — the majority of users will not pay for something they can basically get for free, even if they miss out on a handful of features. The percentage of Spotify users who pay for the service bears this out, having held steady for years at only 25%. And this trend shows no sign of abating — according to the most recent figures, paid users as a percentage of the whole crept up a hair but still sits at only 26.7%.
