Recycled packaging 'may end up in landfill', warns watchdog - BBC News
The National Audit Office (NAO) says over half of the packaging reported as recycled is actually being sent abroad to be processed.

As a result, it says, the government has little idea of whether the recyclables are getting turned into new products, buried in landfill or burned.

While an illusion of success has been created by the UK’s system for recycling packaging, the NAO says, the reality may be quite different.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! A group of world leaders and international finance chiefs has urged the world to rapidly expand the pricing of carbon pollution.
They argue that more than half of emissions of CO2 should be covered by a carbon price within a decade.
India has also called on rich countries to put a tax on coal to help poorer nations adapt to climate change.
These calls came ahead of a UN ceremony where some 155 countries are expected to sign the Paris Climate Agreement.

Worst Mediterranean drought in 900 years has human fingerprints all over it
A new study shows that the current Mediterranean drought is likely the worst in 900 years, probably due to human-caused intensification [...] To be clear, this study doesn’t prove that droughts are getting worse, and it doesn’t prove that human emissions of greenhouse gases are making droughts more severe. In fact, proving such statements would be nearly impossible. What this study does is put recent extreme weather into historical context.

UK consumes far less than a decade ago – 'peak stuff' or something else? | Business | The Guardian
From crops to energy and metals, average material consumption fell from 15 tonnes in 2001 to just over 10 tonnes in 2013 [...] UK households have also abandoned buying many resource-intensive goods common in the recent past – such as metal-heavy video recorders and hi-fi systems, vinyl records, CDs and books – as they shift to digital consumption. [...] The figures will spark fresh speculation that Britain and other developed economies have hit ‘peak stuff’, although some critics pour scorn on the quality of the ONS’s environmental accounts. In January, Ikea said the appetite of western consumers for home furnishings had reached its peak and consumption of many familiar goods was at its limit. Household spending on physical goods, including furnishings, clothing, cars and gadgets, decreased between 2002/03 and 2014, [...] Households now spend more on services than physical goods, he said.
Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

Viewpoint: The rejected vegetables that aren’t even wonky - BBC News
Approximately one-third of the food we produce in the UK is never eaten. [...] And we have to face the fact that almost 50% of food wastage in the UK is domestic - the stuff we buy but don't eat. // I've witnessed some pretty grim scenes in the food business down the years - appalling conditions in the poultry industry, crazy EU fishing laws, all kinds of greed and folly. Root vegetables may be a touch harder to feel for than chickens or fish. But watching 20 tonnes of freshly dug parsnips consigned to the rubbish heap in a Norfolk farmyard - purely because they didn't look pretty enough - is still one of the most shocking things I've ever seen. [...] They "failed" the "cosmetic standards". They weren't wonky, or forked, or bruised or even "ugly". [Specs] from some bizarre set of specifications that defines, with apparent omniscience, what it is that we, the customers, demand our parsnips to be. Not that anyone's asked us.

Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

How Soviet pollution destroyed the Aral Sea - BBC News
[ one example. doesn't mean its the last one ] In October 1990 Western scientists confirmed the virtual disappearance of the Aral Sea in Soviet Central Asia, formerly the fourth largest inland sea in the world. The loss of sea water was the result of 60 years of intensive agriculture and pollution by the Soviet authorities. It is considered the biggest manmade loss of water in recorded history. The surrounding areas were devastated. Local fisherman watched as the shore gradually receded and fish stocks ran out. Local children fell victim to respiratory illnesses. Professor Denys Brunsden, of London's King's College, was one of the first Western scientists to visit the Aral Sea in 1990. //&! The blame for distorting our view of women doesn’t lie just with advertisers | Lucy Mangan | Comment is free | The Guardian
If we objected strongly enough to warped views of female bodies, women would take our custom elsewhere. But we keep buying the brands that offend us [...] But the lack of change in this area suggests consumers are not changing their spending habits. And as most of the consumers of the brands and products these advertisers are selling to are women purporting to hate this kind of thing, we have a conundrum: why are we still doing this? Why aren’t we putting our money where our mouths are? And then, obviously, in further solidarity taking our mouths off for a pizza somewhere? [...] Asking, or compelling by legislation, advertisers to do this runs counter to almost every prevailing ideology and trend. It asks that moneymaking ventures act for the greater good instead of the bottom line. It asks government to chip away at a cornerstone of the free market. It conceptualises women as hapless victims of intangible forces.

Britain's water crisis | Nick Davies | Environment | The Guardian
The immediate cause of the early drying out at the source of the Ouse was simply that there was not enough water in the underground aquifer on which it feeds. But that turns out to be part of something bigger. In March 2013, the local branch of the Environment Agency reported that, depending on conditions, there are now years when they can extract water from the Ouse on no more than 94 days. For the rest of the year, abstractors can use water that has been stored during the wet months in the big reservoir at Ardingly, and they can pump up water through boreholes sunk into the underground aquifers. This in turn reduces the amount of water that bubbles up into the river and its tributaries. The Environment Agency has stopped issuing new abstraction licences for the river. Meanwhile, during the summer months, nearly half of what we like to describe as a river is, in fact, recycled waste water and sewage. [...] [south-east and south] “serious water stress”

Hysterical consumerism ruins food. And holidays. And books | Emma Brockes | Comment is free | The Guardian
[ Brand dilution (because there is a queue of brands waitng to be exploited and sold out, although millenials don't see sell-outs as bad anymore ...) vs ] Brand extension, the capitalist form of mission creep, has been around for a long time and, although it’s hit or miss – Richard Branson’s Virgin Brides springs to mind – it makes a certain amount of commercial sense. More depressing is what it says about consumer appetites, a sugar-in-everything infantilization of tastes that suggests if you love something, you must have it infused in your tea or printed on a blanket so you can drag it around with you everywhere. [...] This transference of one good thing to another, unrelated good thing is part of the peculiarly American urge to satisfy all appetites at once and it’s eroding the idea of pleasure as context-specific.

Our environmental deficit is now beyond nature’s ability to regenerate | Environment | The Guardian
We are heading fast in the wrong direction despite the world gearing up to approve new sustainable development goals and a new climate accord [...] The world enters ecological ‘overshoot’ this year on 13 August, six days earlier than last year. All the world’s production and consumption for the rest of the year, this suggests, then runs up an environmental deficit beyond nature’s ability to regenerate itself and safely absorb our economic waste. It’s a highly conservative estimate, based on the best data available. // no amount of profits/money can't buy us a 2nd earth in 30 years. // Stop burning fossil fuels now: there is no CO2 'technofix', scientists warn - bit.ly/1UiJmqB - Researchers have demonstrated that even if a geoengineering solution to CO2 emissions could be found, it wouldn’t be enough to save the oceans

Go tell the boss: let me work less and I’ll produce more | Life and style | The Guardian
The five-day work week is an artificial and outmoded idea. A shorter working week can boost efficiency and an employee’s happiness [...] The latest trend might have more going for it, though: more tech businesses are experimenting with four-day weeks. As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

[ CPM will go lower, fundamentals point in that direction, Social Media & other future forms of advertising will fill in the lower CPM rates overall. Thus pressuring business models reliant on pageviews even more 2 increase pageviews as the revenue average per pageview declines. Thus u have 2 question which consumer product (entertainment & else) business model do you choose!?

Sorry to burst your bubble | The Economist
bit.ly/1IfX0s9 // "According to two new papers, the crucial variable that separates relatively harmless frenzies from disastrous ones is debt." // see China Stock Market leverage pop mid 2015 - with its huge rise in margin debt trading ... money which was flowing out of the property market into the Stock Market // // &! so if it is about debt - UK mortgage market & consumer/private debt of all kind (loans and credit card debt) does qualify as they took up what was cut by austerity. Plus the Supply Demand distortion, with new builds/project at a decades lowest. // Question for China. The China problem. Can they make their system sustainable before it will crush everyone. // The most obvious is China. But the next one will be different & greater than all came before. Period. Still, UK had not a housing bubble collapse on its own making. Only through endogenous circumstances. UK recession as UK economy runs mostly on consumer sector & debt) bit.ly/1OpClSO bit.ly/1wQITjb bit.ly/1SycLtY

Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis says EU deal is a 'new Treaty of Versailles’ | News | The National
THE bailout deal forced upon Greece by its eurozone creditors was dubbed “a new treaty of Versailles” last night by the country’s former finance minister. [...] the deal comes with years of enforced austerity and privatisation of state assets. Yanis Varoufakis, who quit last week after falling out with his European counterparts, spoke of the “politics of humiliation”. He said the lenders were taking revenge on prime minister Alexis Tsipras. “It is an impossible deal,” he added. “A deal that is simply not viable.” [...] “This has nothing to do with economics. It has nothing to do with putting Greece back on the rails towards recovery. This is a new Versailles Treaty that is haunting Europe again, and the prime minister knows it. He knows that he’s damned if he does and he’s damned if he doesn’t.” [...] “It’s not that it didn’t go down well – there was point-blank refusal to engage in economic arguments. Point blank.
