Super-gonorrhoea's spread 'causing huge concern'
Doctors have expressed "huge concern" that super-gonorrhoea has spread widely across England and to gay men.
The new superbug prompted a national alert last year when it emerged in Leeds, as one of the main treatments had become useless against it.
Public Health England acknowledges measures to contain the outbreak have been of "limited success".
Doctors fear the sexually transmitted infection, which can cause infertility, could soon become untreatable.
Cases of super-gonorrhoea have now been detected in the West Midlands, London and southern England.
Only 34 cases have been officially confirmed in laboratory testing, >>> but this is likely to be the tip of the iceberg of an infection that can be symptomless. <<< + cuts to public health budget! //&! bit.ly/23PdjDp

Deadpool's success accelerates the inevitable: total geek domination | Film | The Guardian
But Deadpool doesn’t just offer up a hero it thinks the fanbase will love, it offers up an entire world. It is one of the best articulations of “geek culture” to reach the big screen. And if it can pull off big numbers at the cinema with an exclusively adult audience, it will presage not only more movies like it but bring geeks one step closer to what they truly want; control of the entire world. [...] Basically Deadpool is Reddit: the movie. It’s highly enjoyable, and very well made, but it’s also a marker, a moment where a massive multi-million dollar bet has been made on geek culture being not only a mainstream proposition but an adult one too.

[...] Ungleichheit zwischen den sozialen Gruppen verstärkt.

Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

What last night’s “The Newsroom” gets wrong about “disruption” in media | PandoDaily
This has become a common theme in Hollywood and television’s depiction of Silicon Valley. Tech entrepreneurs, especially on HBO’s popular series “Silicon Valley,” are often portrayed as awkward losers who lucked into a billion dollar payday simply because they stayed inside playing computer games as kids instead of riding their bikes. It’s as if society still hasn’t graduated from its 1980s “Revenge of the Nerds” mentality. But while there’s truth to every cliche, the act of turning these rich kids into objects of ridicule glosses over the well of sociopathic greed they drew on to make their companies so successful in the first place. Sure, some tech founders are lovable geeks. But the capacity for evil is just as large in Silicon Valley as it is in any other corporate environment. ... [ to the point, that Unterhaltungsfernsehen = menschenverachtend. ]

Why I’m Bullish on the News - POLITICO Magazine
Go maximum mass or maximum specific. [...] News organizations are also going to have to mix and match revenue models. I see eight obvious ones: advertising, subscriptions, premium content, events, cross-media promotion, crowdfunding, micropayments and philanthropy. [...] Today, this same science culture, this civilization of engineers and math, is again on the rise. And to many, it feels like it’s running away with the future. [...] The point is that, for people who aren’t deep into math and science and technology, it is going to get far harder to understand the world going forward. || + http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/1-destroy-the-village-2-save-it-105923.html + http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/05/lords-of-the-viral-internet-105905.html + http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2014/04/brauchli-keller-interview-the-new-york-times-is-not-going-to-turn-into-buzzfeed-105900.html

GitHub Apologizes for Secrecy Around Harassment Allegations | Re/code
The tone of GitHub’s response has gone from defensive to super apologetic. >> "“Last Monday I published the least open and least transparent blog post GitHub has ever written. We failed to admit and own up to our mistakes, and for that I’m sorry. GitHub has a reputation for being transparent and taking responsibility for our actions, but last week we did neither. There’s no excuse. We can do a lot better.” + Add the wifes response = https://medium.com/my-side-of-the-story/2fe173c44215

GitHub co-founder resigns after investigation into harassment claims | The Verge
Horvath claimed to have experienced sexism and gender-based harassment at GitHub. She also spoke out about Preston-Werner and his wife, who she says personally harassed her for two years, the former berating her in his office and the latter stalking her at work. According to Horvath, the Preston-Warners were apparently concerned that she would undermine the company's reputation, perhaps due to her outspokenness on the issues around women in tech. + http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/19/5526574/github-sexism-scandal-julie-ann-horvath + http://www.theverge.com/2014/3/19/5526574/github-sexism-scandal-julie-ann-horvath + http://techcrunch.com/search/Julie+Ann+Horvath#stq=Julie Ann+Horvath&stp=1 "" GitHub was generally female-friendly, but her team felt like a boy’s club. She felt increasingly aware of "how little the men I worked with respected and valued my opinion" and observed the same thing happening to her female co-workers. ""

Rebellious New Feminism Returns to German Social Discourse - SPIEGEL ONLINE
http://www.spiegel.de/international/topic/gender_equality/ "Everything is on the agenda again: how men look at women, how they speak to them, and how they put down the opposite sex in jokes and silly comments to make themselves feel bigger and more important. If one were to summarize what the movement is about, then it would be the notion that gender shouldn't make any difference anymore. Along the way there, the idea is to shatter the images and clichés that assign women and men to different positions in society. The problem is that there are widely divergent notions about how to achieve this objective."
