Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

Film producer shares shocking intros for women in scripts - BBC Newsbeat
Jennifer Lawrence triggered a big debate on gender inequality and Hollywood sexism last October. She said she got mad at herself for failing to negotiate when she found out she was getting paid less than her male co-stars. The Hunger Games actress said there was "an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight". British actress Rachel Weisz told Newsbeat she thinks there's a difference between stories for male and female characters in cinema. "Women are actually not allowed to be difficult, interesting, complex, three-dimensional," she said. "Female characters have to be sweeter and more likeable than a male character would have to be." //&! bit.ly/1QfkFNB

Celebrating the hidden history of disabled people’s fight for civil rights | Frances Ryan | Society | The Guardian
Burgess says the exhibition aims to tell the story of a campaign movement that’s been largely ignored up to now. “If it is covered, it’s often not about people demanding change, it’s about ‘welfare’ or rights being ‘given out’,” he says. The exhibition also celebrates the Disability Discrimination Act, which this week marks its 20th anniversary, and the activists who made the law a reality. With the passing of the landmark DDA, for the first time in Britain the law provided disabled citizens with access to the workplace (employers were required to make “reasonable adjustments” to work and premises) and, through later amendments, to education and transport.

The lady's not for turning: cinematic portrayals of lesbians need to get real | Film | The Guardian
predatory trope ( a significant or recurrent theme) // "The age difference is stark, but beyond this, the narrative of lesbian conversion is there in all its problematic glory, throwing up questions about sexual identity and coercion. Not only by using an uncomfortable stereotype about predatory lesbians, but also by treating sexual identity as if it were a taste in food: here, try the asparagus; if you eat it enough you might like it. [...] Indeed, the conversion trope itself is probably a response to the difficulty in depicting real lesbian relationships – they have to be couched in stereotypical terms for mainstream audiences to connect with. [...] The recurrence of the cliche is one that will hopefully disappear as being public about your queer identity becomes easier, and we begin to recognise that lesbian women can have boring, conventional love stories just like anyone else."

What’s at Stake in the Ellen Pao Case | Re/code
the clubby world of venture capital, a male-dominated culture that has often been criticized as an insular fraternity of privileged white men despite its veneer of being a meritocracy. [...] While gender inequality has always been an issue in Silicon Valley, it has now come to dominate more of the conversation in the industry. Venture capital firms in particular have appallingly few female partners. [...] But Kleiner Perkins still has more to lose. Though it is an icon of Silicon Valley, having provided funding for historic winners like Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Sun and Google, it has, in recent years, been upstaged by younger and flashier firms. Being cast as a bastion of old-world discrimination does little to improve the image.

Toward the end of his opening remarks, Exelrod quoted Doerr, who had hired Pao, discussing what he thinks “correlates more than any other success factor” in entrepreneurs: “If you look at Bezos, or [Netscape founder Marc] Andreessen, [Yahoo co-founder] David Filo, the founders of Google, they all seem to be white, male, nerds who’ve dropped out of Harvard or Stanford and they absolutely have no social life. So when I see that pattern coming in — which was true of Google — it was very easy to decide to invest,” Doerr had said in 2008.

Don't Be Awful: Richard Bottoms on fixing Silicon Valley's race problem - YouTube
bit.ly/17fxm5p - "In the spirit of our event, Bottoms did more than simply bemoan the lack of diversity at major tech firms — he provided some real solutions. He praised the efforts of organizations like Black Girls Code, which has become highly visible and influential since its founding in 2011. But he cited a host of older institutions like One Hundred Black Men designed to facilitate professional connections and further the careers of young black Americans — and yet they don’t seem to be on the tech industry’s radar. Historically Black Colleges and the military, he argues, are also fertile recruiting grounds that should receive more attention from Big Tech. He admits, however, that these older organizations share some of the blame and could do more to encourage their members to get involved with the tech industry.

Venture capital and the great big Silicon Valley asshole game | PandoDaily
(( via pando.com/2015/02/12/how-silicon-valleys-counterculture-went-corporate-and-ruined-everything/ )) --- This is a complex topic with no real “right” or “wrong.” You have to consider what the job of a VC is. It’s not to give inner city kids a helping hand; it’s not to make mom-and-pop dreams a reality; it’s not to help nice guys. It’s to maximize returns and fund companies that have an outsized chance of creating billion-dollar plus outcomes in a decade or less. There is a certain personality type that frequently builds these companies—a mix of outsized arrogance, steel-eyed determination, and even some element of delusion. Rational thinkers don’t usually think they can upend whole industries. People who get impacted by social pressure will be talked out of an idea long before it comes to fruition.

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

At the Crunchies, comedian T.J. Miller, a star of the show “Silicon Valley” (which I watch and love), threw out a bunch of playful zingers in his opening act.

For These Millennials, Gender Norms Have Gone Out Of Style : NPR
More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 agree that gender does not have to define a person in the way that it used to[.] And 6 in 10 say that men & women do not need to conform to traditional gender roles or behaviors anymore. [...] defying gender expectations. "This generation views gender as a mark of self-expression — they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self," she says. For example, Rae Tutera, who will appear in an upcoming documentary produced by Lena Dunham about gender nonconformity in fashion, says that the first time she felt like herself was in a men's suit. Tutera, 29, says she is "on the masculine side of the gender spectrum." [...] "Sometimes you have to act braver than you feel," she says, remembering what it felt like to enter a fancy men's suit store in Manhattan. [ ... but ...] most [vast majority of] millennials don't push gender boundaries. [...] [M]illennials are considering the ways in which gender might be flexible. [+See Comments!]

What last night’s “The Newsroom” gets wrong about “disruption” in media | PandoDaily
This has become a common theme in Hollywood and television’s depiction of Silicon Valley. Tech entrepreneurs, especially on HBO’s popular series “Silicon Valley,” are often portrayed as awkward losers who lucked into a billion dollar payday simply because they stayed inside playing computer games as kids instead of riding their bikes. It’s as if society still hasn’t graduated from its 1980s “Revenge of the Nerds” mentality. But while there’s truth to every cliche, the act of turning these rich kids into objects of ridicule glosses over the well of sociopathic greed they drew on to make their companies so successful in the first place. Sure, some tech founders are lovable geeks. But the capacity for evil is just as large in Silicon Valley as it is in any other corporate environment. ... [ to the point, that Unterhaltungsfernsehen = menschenverachtend. ]

Hook-up Apps Are Destroying Gay Youth Culture | TIME
Many dating apps help perpetuate what people scorn about LGBT: promiscuity, impersonal behavior, and compromised interpersonal connection. [...] But instead of advancing the gay agenda of inclusion, I found the apps to perpetuate what people scorn about LGBT: promiscuity, impersonal behavior, and sexually motivated conversations. This is not the fault of the LGBT community, but these depersonalized conversations are what lead to depersonalized relationships. When an introduction to gay culture is through a sex-based app, it perpetuates the sex-based stereotype. Because LGBT still face shame and disownment, our coming out is plagued with fear that we will lose those we love, which leads to a shame-based idea of relationships. Each dating app focuses on a different demographic[/target audience.] [...] Most importantly, K-12 children should be taught about sexual orientation in an open, direct, and engaging way encouraging normalcy and assimilation.

BBC Radio 4 - A History of Ideas, Historian Simon Schaffer on Beauty and Evolution, Feminine Beauty: A social construct?
Feminine Beauty: A social construct? // The French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir famously declares in her book The Second Sex that a woman isn’t born a woman, rather she becomes one. Simone de Beauvoir suggests that resistance to male stereotypes of beauty can mean greater equality. Voiced by Harry Shearer. Getting Some 'Me' Time: Why Millennials Are So Individualistic : NPR
The 2014 Clark Established Adult Poll found that the top three markers for adulthood were accepting responsibility for self, financial independence and making independent decisions. Twenge first encountered this rise in individualism when she was doing a project on gender roles in the 1990s. Both women and men scored high on this masculine scale that includes highly individualistic traits, such as being independent, relying on yourself, being a leader, etc. Twenge began studying other traits such as self-esteem and extroversion and recognized a pattern that these traits were all increasing over time. "You have emerging adulthood — taking more time to find yourself in your 20s," Twenge says. "By definition that is an individualistic pursuit. 'I want to have that time to myself before I settle down.' That is one that is unknown in traditional collectivist societies." [... thus, give people time, no turbo abi ...]

Intel buckles to anti-feminist campaign by pulling ads from gaming site | The Verge
Intel has pulled an [ad] campaign from [...] Gamasutra after it reportedly received a number of complaints from self-identified gamers upset that the site was championing fair gender representation in video games. The decision by the world's largest chipmaker to remove its [ad] from the site comes as a result of a coordinated campaign called Operation Disrespectful Nod, apparently orchestrated by supporters of the #GamerGate hashtag, who rail against so-called "social justice warrior" writers, journalists, & developers. BBC News - American Dream breeds shame and blame for job seekers
"Unemployed auto workers, factory workers, they have a lot of regrets about the past," he said. "A lot of workers are internalising, 'You succeed on your own merits and your own abilities, and if you fail, you're to blame'," Chen says. He isn't alone in seeing this pattern. Experts tell the BBC that job seekers in the US are now, more than ever, blaming themselves for being out of work, due in part to misconceptions about what it takes to succeed in America. [...] Meritocracy became the prevailing ideology, encouraging workers to aim high and reap the resultant rewards. Anyone could achieve greatness. Paupers could become princes. The more people made, the more likely they were to believe they were worthy of it. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology last year found that the higher people perceived their social class to be, the more likely they were to believe that success comes to those who most deserve it. This Labor Day, Reflect On Diversity And The Future | TechCrunch
Our increased awareness has meant that more and more news stories have come out about the bad behavior of members of our community. The list is long, from startup CEOs and their fraternity-era emails, to venture capitalists who attempt to turn pitch sessions into romantic evenings. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.
