Does the SNP have a cure for our health crisis? | Kevin McKenna | Comment is free | The Guardian
The NHS in Scotland is in a truly parlous state and health boards must act decisively [...] the NHS is coming apart at the seams. Quite clearly, it is not fit for the 21st century. Last week, it was revealed that a crisis in GP recruitment has led to more doctors’ surgeries being taken over by health boards. More than 40 practices are now under health board control. This means that efforts by the Scottish government to improve and expand primary care and relieve the pressure that currently threatens to submerge hospitals are being rendered irrelevant. [...] the CEO of NHS Lothian [Edinburgh] insists that more government cash is needed to tackle a £70m funding gap. [...] The most serious of these is the target of treating 90% of patients within 18 weeks. [...] During the final quarter of last year, the NHS also failed to meet a legal obligation for treatment to start within 12 weeks of its being agreed by a specialist. [...] [Scotland spends 1/3] of its overall budget [on health.]

A Liverpool health experiment which just might save the NHS - BBC News
[ a bomb oozing, not exploding, just getting bigger & bigger & each passing year not tackling the causes - harder to resolve. ] True to form, the wise men at the top of the NHS in their headquarters in Leeds and Liverpool have identified the source of their pain: it's us. We are victims of our own lifestyle choices, demographically ever more numerous, and culturally driven by untameable expectations. We drink too much, we are too fat, we smoke, and we do not exercise and the average age of the population is increasing. The pressure is intolerable. A morning at A&E or a GP's surgery is like a scene from The Day of the Triffids. No power on earth could save us from ourselves and we are lucky to live as long as we do. [...] Unless we change the way we do things, the NHS in England will die. [...] [ FOCUS HAS TO CHANGE - from treatment to prevention and education. ] "The NHS can't cope: no health service would cope - anywhere." // intrinsic motivation by ppl to change for the better.

trans fat = consumable poison (no safe threshold). Sugar not as bad, has safe threshold of around 6-9 teaspoons/day (women-men). body has capability 2 metabolize fructose. insulin resistance associated with weight gain >> energy storage into fat through liver. insulin (spike) is the instigator. // 80% obese population are metabolically ill (various chronic diseases) & 20% of 80%, their body is sucking it up but not till long (mostly younger people). 40% of 70% (people of normal weight amongst the population) are insulin resistant &have other chronic diseases (via metabolic syndrome). it is at a lower prevalence. but still! they ARE thin sick people (metabolic syndrome) "Tofi". their whole numbers are greater than obese sick people. // Exposure 2 western diet! // 21:50 intermittent fasting. when u fast ur liver has 2 live off liver storage. ultimately, better diet is abt 'get the liver fat down' ie by getting rid of the sugar. ketogenic diet // 31:00 Glycemic Load! // 36:00 exercise!

George Kerevan: A merciless attack on the poor ... to the sound of cheers | Comment | The National
What about the cut to Corporation Tax, to 18 per cent? UK firms currently sit on £550bn in cash reserves which they have little inclination to spend, other than to buy back their shares. Cutting their taxes will only swell this useless cash mountain, not lead to more investment. Indeed, the independent Office for Budget Responsibility, in papers published with the Budget, forecasts Britain’s current account deficit on trade will worsen in the next five years – a sure sign of failing productivity and competitiveness. The Tories cheered George Osborne to the rafters yesterday but just wait until the economic roof falls in when American interest rates rise and Britain’s bubble economy has to face the real world.

Greek referendum no vote signals huge challenge to eurozone leaders | Business | The Guardian
It is not clear which view will prevail. The EU mainstream hoped for a yes vote, not only because it would have represented democratic assent to the euro and acceptance of austerity, but also because the Tsipras government would have come under strong pressure to stand down. Negotiations between the two sides have gone nowhere for five months and have become particularly rancorous in the past month as bailout and debt repayment deadlines came and went, // Greece and its people are not too big to fail and but banks it owed money to in Europe (mainly Germany and France) were too big to fail - and to bail out people an inconvenience and nuisance.

Toyota's Top Female Executive Resigns After Arrest : The Two-Way : NPR
[crony capitalism and Wall Street chews them up and spits them out without regard ] // Toyota in a statement today said Hamp resigned Tuesday, and the company accepted her resignation "after considering the concerns and inconvenience that recent events have caused our stakeholders." As Scott reported June 19, "A total of 57 pills were discovered by Japanese customs officials on June 11 inside a package that Hamp mailed to herself from Kentucky, declaring the contents to be a necklace." Oxycodone is legal in the U.S. with a prescription. Hamp, who was arrested June 18, has denied the charges. She told authorities she did not think she had imported an illegal substance, police said. Prosecutors must decide whether to indict Hamp by July 8. She is in detention, but has not been charged with a crime.

// Book Lars Geiges, Stine Marg, Franz Walter: Pegida. Die schmutzige Seite der Zivilgesellschaft?

If People Understood This One Thing, We Would Have Revolution Overnight - YouTube
Martin Luther King, Jr. was working towards a guaranteed basic income for all when he was killed. Wealth inequality, neoliberalism, the actions of the Federal Reserve, along with the greed and theft of the global elite have made the call for a guaranteed basic income for all even more urgent in 2014 than in the 1960s. [...] In his new book, The Economics of Revolution, DeGraw writes: “Having that much wealth consolidated within a mere 1% of the population, while a record number of people toil in poverty and debt, is a crime against humanity. For example, it would only cost 0.5% of the 1%’s wealth to eliminate poverty nationwide. Also consider that at least 40% of the 1%’s accounted for wealth is sitting idle. That’s an astonishing $13 trillion in wealth hoarded away, unused.” In this clip from the full 30-minute interview, DeGraw points out that the Federal Reserve is already printing money and giving it away to the financial elite.

chronic disease are 75% of health care expenditure in western world & developing world! developing countries have bigger problem w obesity & metabolic syndrome than infections like cholera/tb // min13 (Structure of Sugar) fructose is equal 2 alcohol. glucose is metabolized by every organ in the body. even if you don't consume glucose, your body will make it. fructose can only metabolized by the liver. you are overloading your liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). fructose is a liver toxin (liver fat). fructose and alcohol is metabolized into fat! alcohol and fructose can be both nutrients, but they can also be addictive // min 20 Leptin resistance. Insulin turns sugars into fat. western diet (dietary composition, omnivore, fast & processed food) encourage body 2 up the production of insulin (sugar 2 fat) till the ceiling is reached (Pancreatitis -> diabetes). increased insulin response (from diet composition) blocks leptin-to-brain signal (feeling of full) &is addictive over time

// overuse of antibiotics in "industrial animal production."

How Silicon Valley’s counterculture went corporate and ruined everything | PandoDaily
Politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, activists, hippies, and corporations all working together to make the world a better place? In 2015, that arrangement seems unthinkable. So where did the dream of tech-powered togetherness go wrong? [...] [...] // As of last November, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco was $3,350 [£2200]. [...] So contrary to Gosney’s and Archer’s dream of a techno-utopia that benefits every slice of San Francisco’s population, the tech boom — along with various city statutes that limit residential housing — have made it harder than ever for artists and other members of the counterculture to live in the city. These are the very people, mind you, who helped spark the region’s technological revolution. And that’s saying nothing of the struggles felt by teachers, social workers and other non-tech workers struggling to stay afloat as housing prices skyrocket. [...] [C]ity officials and outdated statutes are as much to blame as tech companies

NHS Contract Awarded To Private Firm Despite Rival Bid Being "£7 Million Cheaper" - BuzzFeed News
An £80 million contract to run cancer scans for the NHS has been given to a private health firm with a Tory MP on their board, despite a rival NHS consortium allegedly offering to carry out the work for £7 million less. Ask for details and you get obstructed by the ‘commercial confidentiality’ excuse.” He added: “The evidence is stacking up that NHS England have a privatisation agenda and NHS England are at the moment privatising NHS by stealth.” [...] Conservative MP Malcolm Rifkind gets around £60,000 a year to sit on Alliance Medical’s board, according to public records.

BIS Slams "Market Euphoria", Finds "Puzzling Disconnect" Between Economy And Market | Zero Hedge
"... it is hard to avoid the sense of a puzzling disconnect between the markets’ buoyancy and underlying economic developments globally....  Despite the euphoria in financial markets, investment remains weak. Instead of adding to productive capacity, large firms prefer to buy back shares or engage in mergers and acquisitions.   As history reminds us, there is little appetite for taking the long-term view. Few are ready to curb financial booms that make everyone feel illusively richer.  Or to hold back on quick fixes for output slowdowns, even if such measures threaten to add fuel to unsustainable financial booms. Or to address balance sheet problems head-on during a bust when seemingly easier policies are on offer. The temptation to go for shortcuts is simply too strong, even if these shortcuts lead nowhere in the end. [...] " Never before have central banks tried to push so hard."
