Britain’s young suffer as austerity continues to take its toll | Letters | Business | The Guardian
It is governmental negligence when the poorest young citizens do not have enough money to heat a home or buy a healthy balanced diet. Universities report time and time again that cold homes increase rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, excess winter deaths and mental illness. Inadequate diets increase the risk of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Debt with insufficient income impacts on health indirectly through increased stress, depression and anxiety, and suboptimal coping behaviours – such as increased rates of smoking and drinking.

After the crash in 2008, the Queen asked: “Why did no one see it coming?” Ten years later, she might well ask the same question about the rise of early deaths among young people.

Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? - The Atlantic
Psychologically, however, they are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones. [...] You might expect that teens spend so much time in these new spaces because it makes them happy, but most data suggest that it does not. [...] Teens who spend more time than average on screen activities are more likely to be unhappy, and those who spend more time than average on nonscreen activities are more likely to be happy. There’s not a single exception. All screen activities are linked to less happiness, and all nonscreen activities are linked to more happiness. // &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40840823 - Children consuming online time 'like junk food'

Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. They privilege simplistic concepts that lack nuance and lend significant edge to leaders who talk tough and offer what psychologists call “closure”.

Becoming radicalised – and keeping a secret - BBC News
Some of these individuals identified with an organisation such as IS or al-Qaeda while others followed their own extremist beliefs and underwent a more personal form of radicalisation. [...] Still in many cases individuals are drawn to IS or other extremist groups because they're unhappy in their own lives and are looking for a cause that's bigger than themselves. "The radicalisation process has been triggered by a personal crisis - the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job," says Indiana State University's Mark Hamm, the author of The Spectacular Few, a book about extremism.

Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

One-fifth of youngsters suffer from 'high anxiety' - BBC News
The study looked at the wellbeing and mental health of 7.5 million young people in the UK aged 16 to 24. [...] The figures also show a rising proportion of young people who felt dissatisfied with their health. [...] The figures from the ONS show a picture of a growing number of young people who are satisfied with their lives - but with a persistent minority reporting unhappiness or suffering from anxiety. [...] Campus anxiety [...] But in terms of anxiety, 18% report high levels of anxiety and almost 16% have "medium" levels of anxiety. In a separate measure, there are almost 21% of young people with "evidence indicating depression or anxiety". And young people's perceptions of their own physical health seemed to be progressively more negative, with more expressing dissatisfaction and fewer feeling satisfied. [F]igures for the wellbeing of younger children which showed about one in eight youngsters between the ages of 10 and 15 reported symptoms of mental ill-health.

The experimental artist and director talks about her new film, The Heart of a Dog, the trouble with social media – and coming to terms with death [...] But if your brand is just you, is that uncomfortable? Extremely. It’s even worse to market your style. It’s truly sad. And everyone on Facebook has the same sort of marketing ploy selling their image. What does that do to people? It’s extremely brutalising that you’re going to be for sale. It’s one of the worst things you can possibly imagine. Go to any party and you see that: I just don’t think you’re worth talking to. Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. [ sw & hw iteration = leverage comp advantage ]

Why has Apple broken its vow of silence? - BBC News
re-pricing // would Steve Jobs have done thing?! Not back then. But this time is different. This time, Apples future growth is in China, India, emerging market, emerging middle class of the developing world with western aspirations - consumption (type patter, meat and fancy electronics with a recognisable brand behind it (so ppl can put you into the category of 'made it' - status anxiety)., not in the western world with new products. And I think he took this as an opportunity to transmit that and his confidence into the future for apple - through those lines, 'sent to a worrying investor.' Apple is one of the richest, most valuable things America got. America (Apple) has confidence into the future to sell to the emerging middle class. As much as warren buffet believes in the industrial future strength, re-emergence, to make products affordable/competitively through cheap energy that USA has access now. // &! bit.ly/1JjFsXx talking abt Apples exposure 2 China & Co. Why Has Apple Been Poaching Fashion Execs? | Fashion-Tech | BoF
Apple does not fight on Windows nor Google (Android) turf. It created (fact) a new category. Redefined the category of the Gadget, of the Phone. Of the Laptop. Of the Workstation. This (newest phone/better technology) is not just for the Geeks or Nerds. This is a status symbol you are seen with every day (Apple Watch, iPhone, MacBook (2015 version) at the Coffee shop and elsewhere). That person made a deliberate concious or not decision to buy the Apple product at that price. -vs- GNU/Linux or Windows or Android whatever for the same basic utility at a much affordable price. Who ever came up with that should be highlighted in the next Apple Book about Apples chapter post-Jobs.

Celebrity lifestyles for sale | Life and style | The Guardian
It started with Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop – now everyone from Zooey Deschanel and Reese Witherspoon to Lena Dunham is selling you their way of life [...] Did this have a bearing on how they then responded to the way the story unfolded across the media? This is the less quantifiable benefit of the celebrity lifestyle brand: the emotional yank of feeling as if you’re part of a community, albeit one trying hard to sell you sunglasses. To be a fan today is to constantly be sold to, but also to constantly be questioning and scrutinising the celebrity’s choices. Fans are “polytheistic”, says Auerbach. “They have more choice and want to ‘follow’ a range of celebs who appeal to different parts of their personalities.” The aspirational foodie on Instagram, the interiors on Pinterest, the “sassy” motherhood blogger, the feminist tweeter. “It’s less about individual stars,” Auerbach adds, “and more about constellations.”

// Book Lars Geiges, Stine Marg, Franz Walter: Pegida. Die schmutzige Seite der Zivilgesellschaft?

Is Spotify doomed because of Apple Music? No — Spotify’s been doomed from the start | PandoDaily
Spotify is really the only legitimate competitor left. But its fate, like that of every streaming music service, is also subject to forces outside of its control — forces that are guided by the three-headed hydra of Warner, Universal, and Sony. [...] Although Apple Music and Spotify’s paid tier offer perks that free subscriptions do not — namely, full mobile access and no ads between songs — the majority of users will not pay for something they can basically get for free, even if they miss out on a handful of features. The percentage of Spotify users who pay for the service bears this out, having held steady for years at only 25%. And this trend shows no sign of abating — according to the most recent figures, paid users as a percentage of the whole crept up a hair but still sits at only 26.7%. Apple won’t release a television set, and that’s okay | PandoDaily
[F]or now it seems to have renewed its focus on its set-top box, which will reportedly receive a pretty substantial upgrade at Apple’s WWDC in June. It makes more sense for Apple to create something that plugs into consumers’ existing television sets than it does for the company to release a television set that will have to compete with “good enough” and premium products alike. Apple doesn’t enter commoditized markets. It allows other companies to fumble with new product categories — smartphones, tablets, smartwatches — and then releases a product of its own when it believes the timing is right. Are those categories eventually commoditized? Yep. There are good phones that cost less than $300 without a contract. Tablets are getting cheaper and cheaper. Smartwatches will eventually fall in price, too, assuming anybody buys them. // the champagne gold iPhone was a start ( youtu.be/Saf1b9KNt ), then came the apple watch in gold and the new MacBook in champagne gold at the same time.

Tinder hooks up with Instagram in a perfect match of two rose-tinted, narcissistic apps | PandoDaily
keeping up with the Jones has reached a new low with FB, Instagram, Tinder and Co. // "Instagram isn’t about reality – it’s about a well-crafted fantasy, a highlights reel of your life that shows off versions of yourself that you want to remember and put on display in a glass case for other people to admire and browse through. It’s why most of the photographs uploaded to Instagram are beautiful and entertaining slices of life and not the tedious time in-between of those moments, when bills get paid, cranky children are put to bed, little spats with friends."

The Science Of Why You Should Spend Your Money On Experiences, Not Things | Co.Exist | ideas impact
"The tendency of keeping up with the Joneses tends to be more pronounced for material goods than for experiential purchases," says Gilovich. "It certainly bothers us if we're on a vacation and see people staying in a better hotel or flying first class. But it doesn't produce as much envy as when we're outgunned on material goods." Gilovich's research has implications for individuals who want to maximize their happiness return on their financial investments, for employers who want to have a happier workforce, and policy-makers who want to have a happy citizenry. "By shifting the investments that societies make and the policies they pursue, they can steer large populations to the kinds of experiential pursuits that promote greater happiness," write Gilovich and his coauthor, Amit Kumar, in their recent article in the academic journal Experimental Social Psychology. [...] but also place an emphasis on employers giving paid vacation and governments taking care of recreational spaces.

Apple Stores Will Implement Jewelry Store Practices To Help Sell The Apple Watch | TechCrunch
9to5Mac reports on a number of concrete changes that will be coming to Apple’s physical retail locations to help securely sell even the highest-priced Apple Watch, and to make sure potential customers get plenty of in-store exposure to the device and its many options. The Apple Watch will be stored in custom-made safes overnight, and while waiting for sale, complete with built-in MagSafe chargers (the new disc-shaped version introduced specifically for Apple Watch compatibility), and new display tables will be installed to allow users to get a close look at the wearable. Additional sales practices will be introduced to let store visitors try on various Apple Watch models, material and color options, and to wear them around the store to get a better idea of what it might be like to wear one full-time.

BBC News - Victims of a craze for cosmetic surgery
Part of the problem is that plastic surgery is so lucrative that unqualified doctors have been drawn in - or rather doctors qualified in other areas of quite different medicine. It's alleged that procedures have been done by what are called "ghost doctors". In one court case, it's claimed that the advertised doctor slipped out of the operating room once the patient was under the anaesthetic and the job was then botched by the replacement surgeon. On top of that, it's emerged that some before-and-after photos have had a bit of surgery themselves - surgery of the Photoshop variety. The upshot is that the Korean Association of Plastic Surgeons has called for tighter rules for doctors and for advertisers. They fear that the bad publicity is damaging the reputation of an industry which is largely well-run. But they're fighting against the tide. Plastic surgery is very profitable, even with prices that undercut the US and Europe.

Dating-App Tinder: Sex per Chat - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ Busy Busy Buys, always something doing, needed, planning, on the fast lane ... The World’s Biggest Popstars are Walking Contradictions | NOISEY
bit.ly/1HXHZIy &! "However, what's most telling, is that Lorde has become a bit of an icon for the materialists that she set out to criticise. Kanye loves her; "Royals" soundtracked an advert for a $700 Samsung phone; she's collaborated with MAC cosmetics. It's this exact contradiction - I'm this and I'm also this - which is part of a wider social trend that's fucking around with the definition of authenticity and counter-culture. This stems from what, if you want to get academic about it, is called hyperreality - a phenomenon first observed in the eighties by French sociologist Jean Baudrillard. Shows like The Only Way is Essex are the pinnacle of hyperreality, where even though it clearly states that it's been scripted for your pleasure, the programme relies on the viewer buying into the idea of the characters being completely genuine. [...] we don't want to reject consumer culture at all. We want to buy into the idea of rejecting it. [...] We suck it up and go along with it.
