Inequality report: Top 1% of Scots have more than bottom 50% - The Scotsman
february 2017 by asterisk2a
The richest one per cent north of the border owns more wealth than the bottom 50 per cent, with the poorest 40 per cent of households 9.4 times worse off in 2012/14 than the top 10 per cent, compared with 8.8 times in 2010/12. The research paper found that the least wealthy 30 per cent of households “have very few assets, with employment no longer a guarantee against low wealth.”

UK faces return to inequality of Thatcher years, says report | Business | The Guardian
february 2017 by asterisk2a
Pressure on the government to help struggling Britons has intensified after a leading thinktank warned that falling living standards for the poor threatened the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.
The Resolution Foundation said Theresa May would need to make good on her pledge to support “just about managing” households as it released a report showing that rising inflation and an end to recent strong jobs growth would hit the least well-off hardest.

For UK women in low-paid jobs, a second child is a mixed blessing | Society | The Guardian
august 2016 by asterisk2a
Lack of childcare means mothers have to stop working and see their incomes fall, according to LSE study [...] A new study finds that, while the addition of a second child has little effect on the working hours of mothers in skilled jobs, it has a substantial and negative effect on low-skilled women who are forced to reduce their hours considerably or even give up their jobs altogether. The findings reinforce the view that there is a shortage of affordable childcare in the UK, despite successive government attempts to help women into work in recent years.

Behind the Bond-Stock Divide Is a Big and Risky Bet on Central Banks - WSJ
july 2016 by asterisk2a
The idea is that if stocks are rising, bond yields should be climbing too. Here's how to reconcile it. The answer is central banks. If rates are going to stay lower for longer; if more rounds of quantitative easing are coming; if new ways of easing are coming -- the rates should be going down and stocks moving higher. Does The Myth of Meritocracy show us how to alleviate inequality?
july 2016 by asterisk2a
No debate about social mobility is complete without reference to the supposedly halcyon days of the 1950s and 1960s. The class fluidity of those decades, however, was not the result of professions becoming more meritocratic. It was caused by an unprecedented rise in the number of middle-class jobs: there was more room at the top. [...] Bloodworth writes that 21st-century society is characterised by a dwindling of professional jobs and more people slipping downwards: there is “more room at the bottom”. [...] Globalisation has created what the economist Robert H Frank calls “winner-takes-all” markets

Testing times ahead for Universal Credit
april 2016 by asterisk2a
[ in real terms cuts through the back door. spin doctor and positioning ] Universal Credit was meant to bring "radical changes" to people's real incomes and incentivise them to move off benefits and into work, according to David Finch, a former economic analyst at the DWP.
"But... the strength of the improved incentives it was meant to bring have been gradually eroded," he says, speaking in his current role as a researcher at the Resolution Foundation.
There have been significant tensions between the Treasury and the DWP over its cost.
Last year the government announced funding cuts to the universal credit "work allowance" - reducing the amount people can earn before benefit payments are withdrawn.

Why Everyone Must Get Ready For The 4th Industrial Revolution
april 2016 by asterisk2a
For example, as automation increases, computers and machines will replace workers across a vast spectrum of industries, from drivers to accountants and estate agents to insurance agents. By one estimate, as many as 47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk from automation. Many experts suggest that the fourth industrial revolution will benefit the rich much more than the poor, especially as low-skill, low-wage jobs disappear in favor of automation.
But this isn’t new. Historically, industrial revolutions have always begun with greater inequality followed by periods of political and institutional change. The industrial revolution that began at the beginning of the 19th century originally led to a huge polarization of wealth and power, before being followed by nearly 100 years of change including the spread of democracy, trade unions, progressive taxation and the development of social safety nets.

Zero hour contracts | Economics Help
september 2015 by asterisk2a
41% of people on a zero hour contract job – wish to gain a replacement job, additional job or more hours in current job. This compares to just 12% of people not on a zero hour contract. Supporters argue zero hour contracts have helped to increase labour market flexibility, reduce unemployment and reduce costs for firms. For some workers, the job flexibility is advantageous. However, the rise of zero hour contracts have increased the phenomena of under-employment – where people have a job, but less hours and income than they would like. Critics argue that zero hour contracts lead to lower income, greater job and financial insecurity and reduced quality of life. // via https://redd.it/3kw63i // from comments - These contracts could only have come into being because employers today have the upper hand. The situation is victorian and strips the worker of all dignity. // // Here is not investment happening in the workforce to close skills gap. It's take take take.

How Legal Immigration Failed Silicon Valley | TechCrunch
september 2015 by asterisk2a
Our immigration system hinders entrepreneurship, innovation and productivity. Success in the tech industry, where whole new job categories are created overnight, requires deep familiarity with trends, products and technologies. Learning opportunities abound — if you’re willing to transition to new roles, educate yourself, work on different products or switch companies altogether. Building your own startup, or even joining one, can be the best career move; it offers remarkable potential for growth by wearing multiple hats in an expanding organization. The labor market benefits from this flexibility not just with an improved and adaptable workforce, but also one that creates jobs. The immigration process impedes all these possibilities. [...] [ reset process when switching companies ] [...] And that’s not even the worst part. If you get laid off, you must leave the country. Immediately. [...] Try telling your VC you spent $25,000 of their $1 million funding on immigration fees

economy future relies on innovation. and if you check and monitor to death a system, and add bureaucracy on top of it, and low wages, and being under staffed and being over worked. and crowded, noisy class rooms (unable to spot talent and unable to sponsor). you can't have a prosperous future economy/generation with high social mobility. higher incomes. new industries. // oh and theyve cut research to nothing // oh and the creative digital industry is complaining, and added value industry is complaining about lack of qualified/skilled young workforce. // // UK will lose rest of its heavy industry because of energy prices it can't compete on world wide because it hasn't invested in the Smart Grid, energy storage systems, infrastructure, and renewable energy! Period. Budget2015 they cut all of renewable investment schemes and even had the audacity to put a carbon tax levy on it!

Pando: STEM talent: It's a distribution problem
august 2015 by asterisk2a
But there's another side to the story: STEM jobs may not be the most attractive for the top STEM grads. The Economic Policy Institute found that half the students who studied computer science, but weren't working in comp-sci after they graduated, said it's because they found a better job. Grads can make more money in managerial and professional positions, where the median annual salary is $20,000 higher according to 2009 U.S. Census data. Wages have remained stagnant in the IT sector for the last decade, according to the Economic Policy Institute's report. // // but not SV and Co. hollowing out // automation - vs - skill & problem solving (figuring out how to automate/put something together/create new) - vs - end of the chain work (low end, manual, repetitive, service...) // within the next 20 years, 47% of jobs in developed world could be replaced by robots/automation/machines // Future of Work is about problem solving, not putting (end of the chain) things together. figuring out the new, making the new, making something better, more efficient, faster, better quality, ... // and as it stands now, those who reap the rewards will be few. and gov policy, ie tax evasion, tax avoidance, tax code, fairness, --- gains have to be shared.

Darwinism At Your Doorstep: Why You Only Care About Amazon Now | TechCrunch
august 2015 by asterisk2a
“You either fit here or you don’t,” and that in Seattle the company has a widespread reputation for its toughness. For now, you have a choice whether to work for Amazon. For now, you have options. Amazon is the vanguard of a very scary movement in the tech sector but we’re not all there yet (though some techbros on Twitter seem happy at the thought of Amazon culture catching on). [...] Why do we care suddenly about working conditions when it turns out that white-collar employees are the ones getting shafted? The workers at Amazon fulfillment centers have much less choice and much less power than the marketers and engineers in the Times piece. [...] We’re acting shocked and horrified that Amazon applies what it calls “purposeful Darwinism” to people with MBAs and PhDs, // [ trend, conditions known in service sector job and manual labour sector swapping over into the cushy world of blue-/white-collar worker ] Capitalism regresses toward feudalism.

Will Advances in Technology Create a Jobless Future? | MIT Technology Review
august 2015 by asterisk2a
Who Will Own the Robots? - We’re in the midst of a jobs crisis, and rapid advances in AI and other technologies may be one culprit. How can we get better at sharing the wealth that technology creates? // BY MARTIN FORD - The Great Divide: Unequal Societies and What We Can Do About Them BY JOSEPH E. STIGLITZ &! Inequality: What Can Be Done? BY ANTHONY B. ATKINSON &! The Second Machine Age: Work, Progress, and Prosperity in a Time of Brilliant Technologies BY ERIK BRYNJOLFSSON AND ANDREW MCAFEE // &! Paul Krugman - “A lot of what’s happening [in income inequality] is not just the gods of technology telling us what must happen but is in fact [due to] social constructs that could be different.” - gov policy, corporate policy (ie 4-day work week and 6-hour days because productivity and profit margin do allow for that, and more brings diminished returns etc etc but will that go down well with Wall Street?)

human capital, HR - as cost center. // trading short-term competitiveness (kick ppl of the book according to demand) but trade it in aggregate with long-term social deprivation and skill gaps and underinvestment. because of dog eat dog mentality than you are incentivised to compete on price, because it is the easiest and you are able to to it with those neoliberal labour reforms in Europe. Europe's economic challenge not just about Greece - BBC News
august 2015 by asterisk2a
IMF, Christine Lagarde, said: "I remain firmly of the view that Greece's debt has become unsustainable." [...] Greek debt will reach 201% of GDP some time next year. [...] It is unlikely a portion of the debt will be written off but there may well be an agreement to extend current loans and to lower the rates of interest. [...] [ the overall health of Europe as a whole and its individual parts in question] [...] the eurozone economy splutters. There is a recovery - the eurozone is growing at an annual rate of 1.3% - but it is patchy. In the [Q2'15] France and Italy, which account for 40% of the eurozone economy, flat-lined. Italy which had only recently emerged from recession fell back, managing growth of just 0.2%. [...] [ ECB: on balance, outlook remains on the downside ] The eurozone economy is still smaller than it was in 2008. [...] The fundamental challenges to the European economy remain - how to innovate [...] modernise [...] [ EU project living up to its potential ]

How Millennials Are Paying a High Price As a Result of the 2008 Financial Crash | Better Markets
august 2015 by asterisk2a
[ post-GFC ] 56% of 22-year-olds who just graduated ended up in jobs that did not require a degree, categorizing them as “underemployed.” [...] Today’s younger Americans are taking on more student loan debt than any generation before them, delaying major life milestones such as buying a home and starting a family. This debt is also threatening older generations, who need a large and growing workforce paying into social safety net programs such as Medicare and Social Security. [...] Mr. Rattner gets it right in his column when he writes that “starting behind often means never catching up,” since it’s been proven that graduating in a poor economy can have a long-lasting effect on a person’s career. [...] This lost generation faces an uncertain future and the resulting fallout will negatively impact them, their families and the entire U.S. economy for decades to come. // all the while, banker bashing has become a no-go topic in UK. // &! bit.ly/14R1pzk &! bit.ly/1PsHx7C

China's Devaluation Becomes Japan's Problem - Bloomberg View
august 2015 by asterisk2a
The worsening economy, which voters hoped Abe would have sorted out by now, doesn't help. Inflation-adjusted wages dropped 2.9 percent in June, a sign Monday's second-quarter gross domestic product report for the may be truly ugly. [...] After 961 days, all Abenomics has really achieved is a sharply weaker yen, modest steps to tighten corporate governance and marketing slogans asking companies to hire more women. [...] If Japan offers a cautionary tale, it's that weaker currency alone isn't the answer. If Abe had used the yen's 35 percent plunge since late 2012 to good effect -- passing big reforms on labor flexibility, import tariffs, tax policy, supporting startups, reducing red tape -- Japan might not be facing the prospect of another recession. [ Japan's experience is a red flashing warning light for UK, US and especially Germany. ie uncompetitive Zombie corporations held alive with NIRP, ZIRP, and future new normal low interest rate environment. Access To Startup Skills Threatened By U.K. Visa Review | TechCrunch
august 2015 by asterisk2a
[ unable to move fast, execute fast ] Startups of course rely on filling vacancies by bringing skills from abroad — given it may be the only way to obtain relevant expertise when you’re working in such nascent areas. [...] According to the MAC’s call for evidence, the proposed changes being considered by the government include some potentially radical measures — such as: significantly raising the salary threshold; restricting which job roles are eligible; and removing the right for dependents of visa holders to be able to work in the U.K. [ salaries threshold, NHS already cried out loud foul as many foreign nurses would have to leave it threshold would be set at about 34-35 minumum earnings. ] [...] “The majority don’t… and several of the respondents said it’s already too complicated and expensive for us to go through that process,” he notes. [...] “populist politics” could pose a threat the U.K.’s digital economy [... quality of life in London less than in other US cities ...]

Tech’s Privilege Barrier — The Information
july 2015 by asterisk2a
Behind the articles we write about hot startups and funding rounds is a truth that needs a headline of its own: The technology industry is not as meritocratic as it may seem. For this column, I am focusing specifically on entrepreneurs, the people who found companies and beat the odds to turn them into something big. By many measures, the industry is incredibly fair with relatively few barriers to entry. You could, in theory, build the next Snapchat or WhatsApp with a good idea, a laptop and barely any capital. The reality is a little different. Rags to riches tales (like Steve Jobs or WhatsApp’s Jan Koum) get a lot of attention and certainly exist. But the “anyone can make something of himself” narrative ignores the fact that to go from idea to successful company you need a lot of other ingredients, ingredients where privilege helps a lot.

intrinsic motivation, fairness, social animal - social comparison (is encoded into the brain) - status anxiety // self-interest mostly wins over ethics/moral values? // trust between principle & agent // org structure and inventive - ie bonus variable attracts more selfish people and risk takers // justice and fairness is critically important - not only in orgs but also democracies //&! Natural rate theory (equilibrium) - service sector jobs (unskilled manual labour jobs) w minimum wage and not higher. and flexible wages with no minimum wage (USA) create working poor/inequality. institutional change - economists are not just analysts they also affect policy makers (think tanks). // austerity hurts equality/social mobility = economic long-run damage to potential (thus output gap and productivity loss) - lack of supply of able workforce to create added value products & services. trickle-down not helping. //&! tax code unfair, lower capital gains tax than on earned (labour) income

The escape from the balance sheet recession and the QE trap: An interview with Richard Koo - YouTube
july 2015 by asterisk2a
"deflationary" is a symptom of balance sheet recession, deleveraging, debtoverhang ... of the private sector, corporate sector (& public gov sector) (to repair balance sheet). inflation of price of goods 2 live is still existent. you cant eat laptops. inflation is still present. actions of private sector, corporate sector to repair balance sheet (and even public sector, all three together) is deflationary. // UK! interesting is that consumer still borrows ie via credit card and mortgages. // question is how long UK can run such a big current account deficit. somebody has to pay for it, if not the gov with debt, then it has to be the private sector. as long as it can serve debt payments, as long as it has wage growth (increase of productivity, closing of output gap). But job creation during recovery was mostly Service Sector Jobs & self-employment. Not added value STEM. // corporate sector will not, in the long-run, pay for current account deficit w debt. &! youtu.be/EhYvaMc3f44

Employers warn of 'skills emergency' - BBC News
july 2015 by asterisk2a
More than half of employers fear they will not be able to recruit enough high-skilled workers, according to a survey by the CBI. The employers' organisation is warning that a skills shortage is "threatening to starve economic growth". [...] "The government has set out its stall to create a high-skilled economy, but firms are facing a skills emergency now, threatening to starve economic growth," said Ms Hall. "Worryingly, it's those high-growth, high-value sectors with the most potential which are the ones under most pressure. That includes construction, manufacturing, science, engineering and technology. [...] The survey also highlighted concerns about the need for better careers advice to help young people understand more about the jobs likely to be available. George Kerevan: A merciless attack on the poor ... to the sound of cheers | Comment | The National
july 2015 by asterisk2a
What about the cut to Corporation Tax, to 18 per cent? UK firms currently sit on £550bn in cash reserves which they have little inclination to spend, other than to buy back their shares. Cutting their taxes will only swell this useless cash mountain, not lead to more investment. Indeed, the independent Office for Budget Responsibility, in papers published with the Budget, forecasts Britain’s current account deficit on trade will worsen in the next five years – a sure sign of failing productivity and competitiveness. The Tories cheered George Osborne to the rafters yesterday but just wait until the economic roof falls in when American interest rates rise and Britain’s bubble economy has to face the real world.

The Fundamental Fallacy of Modern Recruiting | TechCrunch
june 2015 by asterisk2a
Engineers in most firms today are also supposed to know at least something about product design, marketing, and customer support for those top-paying enterprise clients. Purely technical roles still exist of course, but they tend to congregate away from consumer and enterprise software into areas such as embedded systems. Interdisciplinary skills may be the hallmark of the modern engineer, but it is precisely that broad and ambiguous skillset that complicates hiring. [...] [HR/Recruiters] have an impossible job looking for these unicorn employees. When we combine the increasing ambiguity of our jobs with the increasing distance of HR recruiters from the actual work taking place, you get everything that is wrong with modern recruiting. [...] [ Founder team should ] take an active role in ensuring that the right employees are being hired. [ And not outsourcing at first chance. ]

Google 'should be allowed in examinations' - BBC News
april 2015 by asterisk2a
It is inevitable search engines such as Google will be allowed in public examinations, including GCSEs and A-Levels, the head of an exam board says. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime. -Confucius >> The bulimic learning model unintentionally ignores the 3 steps involved in the learning process: (1) remembering information; (2) thinking, which is the rearrangement of information; (3) learning, which is the use of information in a thought process until the person is fluent.10 Bulimic learning never allows the student to get beyond the first step of remembering. '100,000s young people left behind' because of unemployment - BBC Newsbeat
february 2015 by asterisk2a
#symptom !!! "There [aren't] enough jobs to go around," he says. "Everybody is fighting for the same job and if you haven't got qualifications or even experience you're always going to be looked over. "So some people do find it harder to get a job than other people. "It's definitely depressing, it takes a toll on your self-esteem, confidence and motivation but you have to get to a point where you have to push forward... to better yourself." [...] Matty's still unemployed but much more hopeful of finding work after doing voluntary work and enrolling on a series of training programmes.

OECD moniert wachsende Ungleichheit zwischen Arm und Reich - SPIEGEL ONLINE
december 2014 by asterisk2a

Fortune 500 firms in 1955 vs. 2014; 89% are gone, and we’re all better off because of that dynamic ‘creative destruction’ | AEIdeas
august 2014 by asterisk2a
Economic Lesson: That’s a lot of churning and creative destruction, and it’s probably safe to say that almost all of today’s Fortune 500 companies will be replaced by new companies in new industries over the next 59 years, and for that we should be thankful. The constant turnover in the Fortune 500 is a positive sign of the dynamism and innovation that characterizes a vibrant consumer-oriented market economy, and that dynamic turnover is speeding up in today’s hyper-competitive global economy. Steven Denning pointed out a few years in Forbes that fifty years ago, the life expectancy of a firm in the Fortune 500 was around 75 years. Today, it’s less than 15 years and declining all the time. In the end, the creative destruction that results in a constantly changing group of Fortune 500 companies is driven by the endless pursuit of sales and profits that can only come from serving customers with low prices, high quality and great service.

The rise of robot scheduling is a nightmare for low-wage workers - Quartz
august 2014 by asterisk2a
The Times story points at a larger truth: Advances in management and workplace technology all have essentially one goal, to get more out of employees at lower cost. And in the quest for efficiency, companies often forget they’re dealing with people. + Kantor offers as an example the heartbreaking chronicle of a woman named Janette Navarro, and her efforts to raise her young son while working at Starbucks under this scheduling system. She often found out about her work hours with only a few days notice, requiring panicked adjustments to take care of her son and the family’s finances. She was sometimes asked to “clopen” her store (work till closing at 11pm and return at 4am to open it). The job required constant scrambling and caused tension with family members she frequently needed to beg for help to keep an eye on her son. ... She wasn’t alone.

Manufacturing the Talent Shortage, by Dimas Guardado | Model View Culture
august 2014 by asterisk2a
In order to fully realize the vision of a technical workforce that serves the needs of our diverse populations, we will need to ensure that all workers, regardless of their background, experience level, or motivation for entering the field, have access to the resources they need to achieve mastery in their profession. We need not wait for future generations to pass through Computer Science programs and coding bootcamps to construct the environments in which our current and future colleagues will find success. Organizations can take on practices that encourage mutual instruction, facilitate knowledge sharing, and produce safety mechanisms for problems that might arise from knowledge gaps. Code review, pair programming, coding standards, practice fields, retrospectives, testing, and monitoring are all practices that are well known to support these aims, and many can be used specifically with an eye towards developing and growing emerging talent.

If Schools Don't Change, Robots Will Bring On a 'Permanent Underclass': Report | Motherboard
august 2014 by asterisk2a
via http://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/2ct2xs/if_schools_dont_change_robots_will_bring_on_a/ The respondents overwhelmingly agree that this lovely future where robots do the work and humans design the robots and everyone has leisure time and lots of money only exists in a fantasy future where the school systems pump out a shitload of Elon Musks and Sergey Brins—or, at the very least, people who can reliably work at the companies those guys own. [...] only the best-educated humans will compete with machines [...] and education systems [around the world] are still sitting students in rows & columns, teaching them to keep quiet and memorize what is told to them, preparing them for life in a 20th century factory.” // Rise of Service Jobs (dominance) in USA, even post-GFC. // ADD: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/on-leadership/wp/2014/08/07/are-robots-coming-for-your-job/

The female Pinterest engineer who pressed tech giants to air embarrassing diversity numbers - San Francisco Business Times
august 2014 by asterisk2a
via https://twitter.com/mialoira/status/495027092367478784 || https://twitter.com/beltzner/status/494977730677440512 || https://twitter.com/triketora // In her experience, Chou said women engineers face significant, sometimes subtle, obstacles, starting with low performance expectations and less-than-plum assignments. "Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" One major fact that advocates say must be addressed is that far fewer young women than men are learning computer science while in school. // http://www.codedoc.co/directors-thoughts/

The Rise Of Europe's Religious Right
july 2014 by asterisk2a
For the most part, though, issues dear to social conservatives were a side issue in elections driven heavily by economic frustration. [...] The suddenness with which social conservatives became a force in Brussels has many progressives speculating that they are the creations of American social conservatives seeking to “export the culture wars.” [...] Today, American ties seem much more about a shared vision to build a global conservative movement rather than leaning on stronger and wealthier U.S. partners for support. // http://www.salon.com/2014/02/28/the_dying_right_why_christian_fundamentalists_are_in_panic_mode_partner/ || Pro Progressive - the hard things are hard bc they are worth doing it. It's easy to turn ones back. But its hard to hold your face into the storm that is brewing. Holding onto status quo is not worth the struggle, it is a futile short-term view - as the status quo is not sustainable.

The Futurist: The Education Disruption : 2015
july 2014 by asterisk2a
Hence, the superstar of the modern age is not the person with the best degree, but rather the person who acquires the most new skills with the greatest alacrity, and the person with the most adaptable skillset. [...] (Moody's has already downgraded the outlook of the entire US higher education industry). But most importantly, the most valuable knowledge will become increasingly self-taught from content available to all, and the entire economy will begin the process of adjusting to this new reality. // Book: The Start-up of You - Reid Hoffman.

Humans And Computers Will Come Together For Middle Work | TechCrunch
july 2014 by asterisk2a
Middle work leverages what machines do best – solving low-value, high-volume problems – and combines it with what humans do best – solving high-value, low-volume problems. Middle work is not just “information work” where humans use computers to complete tasks like millions of people do every day in the office. Rather it’s defined as work that wouldn’t be economically viable for a human to do without a workflow platform, yet is too nuanced for software to perform unaided. For example, software is great for spellchecking a marketing email, but only a human can think creatively to write an engaging headline to get consumers to click on that email.

IAMA: Christopher Hitchens | reddit's top ten questions - YouTube
july 2014 by asterisk2a
moral hero, grit and grain: book "a struggle for power." many minutes in 'working class adopting capitalism without it's cruelties.' corporations, politicians, there got to be transparency & accountability. avoiding ecological, environmental & economic disaster, exploitation, secrecy, misery @ the workplace & parasitic behaviour (leeching out the life of the host, the planet, till death). end of video; debate, debating, speech, rhetoric and flair; tip - improv. Socratic method; process of elimination, eliminating all questions a good means of ordering the mind. BIS Slams "Market Euphoria", Finds "Puzzling Disconnect" Between Economy And Market | Zero Hedge
june 2014 by asterisk2a
"... it is hard to avoid the sense of a puzzling disconnect between the markets’ buoyancy and underlying economic developments globally.... Despite the euphoria in financial markets, investment remains weak. Instead of adding to productive capacity, large firms prefer to buy back shares or engage in mergers and acquisitions. As history reminds us, there is little appetite for taking the long-term view. Few are ready to curb financial booms that make everyone feel illusively richer. Or to hold back on quick fixes for output slowdowns, even if such measures threaten to add fuel to unsustainable financial booms. Or to address balance sheet problems head-on during a bust when seemingly easier policies are on offer. The temptation to go for shortcuts is simply too strong, even if these shortcuts lead nowhere in the end. [...] " Never before have central banks tried to push so hard."

The New Economics Foundation said a shorter, more flexible working week would be good for workers, the environment and the economy." - future is ~30-35hrs with productivity time slots - /// http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-23462627 Figures from the Office of National Statistics suggest we are actually working on average an hour or two less than we did in 1971 but it does not feel that way, as the internet and email mean we are never off-duty. || http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-26436131 - "Compressed hours" - teamTreehouse has a 4 day work week.

BBC News - Foreign languages 'shortfall' for business, CBI says
june 2014 by asterisk2a
The UK's education system is failing to produce enough people with foreign-language skills to meet a growing need from business, the CBI has said. Nearly two-thirds of about 300 UK firms surveyed by the business lobby group said they preferred staff with these skills. French, German and Spanish were highly prized but Arabic and Mandarin were growing in importance, it said.

Year of Code is too late and a drop/tea-cup in the ocean. College needs to offer Computer Science Degrees (Technichal College), not just University. College's offers courses as "Beauty Technicians." Open your company's doors and let the machines in - the economy depends on it - Telegraph
june 2014 by asterisk2a
The faster the mechanisation process, the more likely we are to see productivity – the amount of output each worker generates – starting to grow again and, with it, wages. A greater use of artificial intelligence throughout the economy will benefit, not hurt, the overall workforce. There are just two, crucial, caveats: it will be vital to help individuals displaced by the new technologies to find work in new areas. Better education and training will become even more vital. We also need policies to ensure that the UK, already a leading player in high value-added industries, continues to develop in these areas; this means making sure that Britain remains an open economy, that taxes are kept low, that higher education is allowed to thrive free of the dead hand of the state, and that infrastructure, including airport links, is up to scratch.
