How would you pull a Big Short in 2016? | Paul Mason | Opinion | The Guardian
The same institutions that were parading their restraint, largesse and deep concern for humanity in Davos last week are condemned in the movie by the designer of the “short”, Mark Baum, in the following terms: “We’re living in an era of fraud in America. Not just in banking. But in government, education, food, religion, journalism, prisons, baseball ... Somehow, American values became: Fuck it, let’s grab what we can for now and the hell with tomorrow.”

Billionaire supports reported inquiry into possible ExxonMobil cover-up | Environment | The Guardian
Activist Tom Steyer’s comments followed reports that California attorney general is looking into what the world’s biggest oil company knew about climate change. Billionaire environmental activist Tom Steyer spoke out on Wednesday in support of an unconfirmed investigation by California into allegations that ExxonMobil spent decades lying to investors and the public about its knowledge of climate change. “We don’t have the facts yet, but I think that there is enough that has been revealed that it’s totally appropriate that (California) be conducting this investigation,” Steyer told the Guardian. “Anybody who puts out intentionally misleading information I think should be answering to us.” Steyer’s comments came hours after the Los Angeles Times reported that California’s attorney general, Kamala Harris, is looking into what ExxonMobil, the world’s biggest oil company, knew about climate change going as far back as the early 1980s.

Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

Why are we looking on helplessly as markets crash all over the world? | Will Hutton | Opinion | The Guardian
[ so much debt in the system, a rise in interest can not be served as is ] The imminent collapse of the Chinese Ponzi-scheme economy shows that we need to bring control to the international economy. [...] There has always been a tension at the heart of capitalism. Although it is the best wealth-creating mechanism we’ve made, it can’t be left to its own devices. Its self-regulating properties, contrary to the efforts of generations of economists trying to prove otherwise, are weak. [...] Profits as a share of national income in Britain and the US touch all-time highs; wages touch an all-time low as the power of organised labour diminishes and the gig economy of short-term contracts takes hold. The excesses of the rich, digging underground basements to house swimming pools, cinemas and lavish gyms, sit alongside the travails of the new middle-class poor. These are no longer able to secure themselves decent pensions and their gig-economy children defer starting families ...

Energy firms overcharging customers, says Ofgem - BBC News
Energy companies are "overcharging in many cases" with prices failing to fall in line with dropping wholesale costs, the industry's regulator has said. [...] Dermot Nolan, chief executive of Ofgem, told the BBC that domestic gas and electricity prices should be cheaper "for the vast majority of people". Wholesale energy costs make up nearly half of a domestic bill, and have fallen by about a third in the last 12 to 18 months, he said. Yet, prices had not fallen, he added.

New year, old grievances: why Britain’s bugbears in 2016 look very familiar | Martin Boon | Opinion | The Guardian
A new survey of what’s on our minds reveals a nation still obsessed with the same things as in the 1960s - inequality and immigration [...] Seven out of 10 suggest that inequality and immigration create the biggest societal divides of today [ but tories take on what is easiest, immigration. but not inequality ] So nothing’s changed, and it’s likely not much will – at least, not if you’re a member of our world-weary public, exasperated with the collective failure of political solutions to modern-day grievances.

[ German livestock industry is using last stand-antibitoics, without oversight, regulation, accountability, transparency ] Geflügel: Antibiotika wirken immer häufiger nicht, weil Bakterien dagegen resistent werden. Ein Grund ist übermäßiger Einsatz in der Tierhaltung. Das BVL testete 125 Proben von Hähnchen und 84 von Pute auf entsprechende Rückstände. Land degradation costs the world up to $10.6tn a year, report says | Global development | The Guardian
More than half of the world’s arable land is moderately or severely degraded, according to a report published on Tuesday by the Economics of Land Degradation (ELD) Initiative (pdf). The report estimates the cost of this environmental destruction, not only from lost agricultural production and diminished livelihoods, but also from the lost value of ecosystem services formerly provided by the land, including water filtration, erosion prevention, nutrient cycling and the provision of clean air. [...] “We should look at realigning the incentive structure that we have away from incentives that degrade the land to those that promote sustainable management,” [...] reduction in biodiversity, ecosystems, and ecosystem services.”

Farming News - Pesticides have bigger impact on invertebrates than climate change new study reports
This is one of the first studies to investigate the impact such factors have on farmland invertebrates in the UK and it is hoped that the findings will encourage the creation of new measures to mitigate the loss of these organisms. Results suggest that increasing pesticide use has had more of a direct effect on abundance of some invertebrates than temperature change, with the main driver of change in an agricultural environment being human behaviour. Climate change will, in the long term, cause changes in certain groups of organisms, some of which are cereal pests whose abundance may increase. Any subsequent increase in the use of insecticides will negatively affect the abundance of all invertebrate groups, many of which are beneficial.

Food banks have become a lifeline for many, but where is the way out? | Patrick Butler | Society | The Guardian
Back in September 2012, however, when Bestwood and Bulwell food bank opened, Webster did not expect to be hugely busy, confidently believing it could be “run out of a cupboard”. What happened next was terrifying: the initial trickle of referrals turned into a flood, triggered by what Webster calls “downright poverty”. After a year, volunteers were “on their knees” (though they are on their feet again now, he adds), battered not only by the sheer weight of demand, but by the shocking specificity of the deprivation and injustice they encountered: the food bank client who was sanctioned by the jobcentre (had her benefits stopped) for not attending a job search interview even though she told them she was in hospital having chemotherapy; a woman client who asked if the food bank gave out tampons; she had no money and had been forced to use newspaper instead. It troubles him that so much of their work is, on the face of it, due to avoidable failures in state provision, ...

Ex-health secretary Andrew Lansley to advise firms on healthcare reforms | Politics | The Guardian
Andrew Lansley, the architect of the coalition government’s efforts to privatise parts of the NHS, has taken a job advising corporate clients on healthcare reforms despite David Cameron’s pledge to close the “revolving door” between Whitehall and the private sector. The management consultants Bain & Company took on Lord Lansley in August. The newly ennobled Conservative peer also plans to become an active associate of a “strategic communications consultancy” set up by his wife and will advise on health and social care. His appointments will raise eyebrows because Lansley, who was health secretary for two years until 2012, is still blamed by many in the health service for the Health and Social Care Act, which critics said increased the privatisation of the NHS.

UK's most expensive city facing 'catastrophe' - BBC News
shortage of supply = unaffordable = nobody can afford to live there, work there, study there. or have to commute from out of town for 1 hour or more. // this is not only a problem in Oxford. NHS Grampian has problems of recruiting because unaffordable house prices and rents pushed up by Oil Industry and the lack of new housing. Same for teaching jobs. // all the while building companies make pumper profits and even skirt around the edges to lower the ratio of social and affordable housing they have to provide with each new big project. its in their interest, if prices were to fell, they would make less money. so they build not enough to keep up with demand at all. and not enough so each new builds profit rises because of risen demand and people willing to pay more for the same house or flat from previous year or two or three despite no real improvement in the build technically/energy efficiency wise/or architecture wise - modern, wide open, big windows. //

Europe is becoming an undemocratic continent where force matters more than law | Comment is free | The Guardian
Only banks, global corporations and the superrich have any power against this faceless semi-superstate [...] In the past year, on two occasions when tested, European solidarity fell apart. [...] The real power, meanwhile, sits with large corporations, banks and elites. And here’s the strangest thing: for all the power concentrated at the top, the EU lacks the will to operate purposefully in the multipolar global power system. We know, roughly, what the US wants. Ditto for China and Russia. Ask what Europe wants – in Ukraine, Syria or the Arctic circle – and you’ll draw a blank. In a multipolar world, whose chaos zones are expanding, effective states with clear diplomatic aims and red lines matter.

Prospect of TTIP already undermining EU food standards, say campaigners | Business | The Guardian
Opponents of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership say EU negotiator has admitted to approving entry of banned goods [...] EU negotiators will resume controversial trade talks with the US on Monday amid claims that multinational companies have jumped the gun in advance of any agreement to import goods that are currently banned – including genetically modified crops and chemically washed beef – into European markets. A campaign group says that a report in a US journal concerning the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks show that Europe is already capitulating to huge pressure from the US to allow imports of previously banned goods before an agreement is reached. [...] [ as always its about] lower trade barriers and boost growth. [ Trade Deals like TTIP & TPP are better for US economically than a military invasion. who is excluded? BRIC. Who didnt want to join AIIB? USA. But who did? UK & Germany. This is about economic & political power/reach/influence]

Facebook paid £4,327 corporation tax in 2014 - BBC News
The latest revelations will reignite the debate about how much UK corporation tax companies pay at a time when several multinational corporations are being investigated by the European Commission over the tax arrangements they have with European Union member states. Google, Amazon, a division of the Fiat motor company and Starbucks are all subject to the investigation and the European Commission has said it could widen its probe further. The investigation came after Starbucks was revealed to have paid just £8.6m in UK corporation tax in the 14 years between 1998 and 2012, despite making more than £3bn in UK sales in the same period. Last week, EU finance ministers agreed to boost information sharing in response to the so-called LuxLeaks scandal that emerged last year. The scandal showed Luxembourg had issued hundreds of tax rulings allowing companies to lower their tax bill by funnelling their profits through the country. //&! bbc.in/1LJG6DY &! bit.ly/1R7PjEf

Paris climate summit: UN negotiations 'need redesign' - BBC News
[ only bottom up works ... till the tide is big enough. same with health and fitness (which in part has to be about looking good/fit). self-esteem. ] The UN climate negotiations are heading for failure and need a major redesign if they are to succeed, scientists say. The pledges that individual countries are offering ahead of the Paris climate summit in December are too entrenched in self interest instead of being focussed on a common goal. The researchers say the science of cooperation is being ignored. Instead, they say the negotiations should focus on a common commitment on the global price of carbon. This means countries would agree on a uniform charge for carbon pollution, a scheme that would encourage polluters to reduce their emissions. The comments from researchers at the University of Cambridge, UK, University of Maryland, US, and University of Cologne, in Germany, are published in the journal Nature. //&! bbc.in/1jYOUtz

Revealed: British ministers tried to block EU moves to clean up air quality | Environment | The Guardian
A document obtained by the Observer reveals that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been advising British MEPs to vote against legislation that would oblige countries to carry out “routine and non-routine” inspections on vehicles’ “real-world” emissions. [...] The revelation will add to the growing concerns over the government’s commitment to tackling air pollution. It follows the admission last week that the Department for Transport had ignored significant evidence of the fraudulent practices being employed by the car industry when this was sent to it a year ago. About 29,000 deaths in the UK are hastened by inhalation of minute particles of oily, unburnt soot emitted by all petrol engines and an estimated 23,500 by the invisible but toxic gas nitrogen dioxide (NO2) discharged by diesel engines.

Nur die Notwendigkeit des starken Staates. [...] [ The Corporation (2005) by Joel Bakan ] [...] Beschreibt das nicht perfekt das Wesen der großen Konzerne - je größer, desto besser? Und VW ist sehr groß. [ Amazon's monopsony ]

Bubble Machine Timeline: Visual Evidence Of The Fed's "Third Mandate" | Zero Hedge
The problem with rushing to combat any sign of economic or financial market turmoil by resorting immediately to counter-cyclical policies is that the creative destruction that would normally serve to purge speculative excess isn’t allowed to operate and so, misallocated capital is allowed to linger from crisis to crisis, making the next boom and subsequent bust even larger than the last.

30 stone at 13: meet the obese teenagers going under the knife | Society | The Guardian
More than 8,000 patients had weight-loss surgery in 2012-13, according to NHS figures – a 30-fold increase in just over a decade. They were not only middle-aged and long-term obese, but teenagers and young people, too: 570 under-25s had surgery between 2010 and 2013, according to the UK National Bariatric Surgery Registry, and nearly 40% of these were “super obese”. Despite healthy eating edicts and government campaigns, they had, in their short lives, already advanced through the obesity categories – obese, severely obese, morbidly obese – and now, at super obese, were more than twice the weight they should be.

The Myth of Valley DoucheBaggery - John Battelle's Search Blog
But I think our industry culture is moving far faster than the writers at Silicon Valley might wish to believe. I think we’re seeing the rise of a new culture, one that rejects arrogance and the founder worship which breeds it. Inevitable outliers aside, the Valley and technology culture I experience every day in my work at NewCo is one of passion, sweat, earnestness, and good intentions. Sure, we all fuck up. And sure, the press (especially, not surprisingly, the press in New York) has a field day when someone does. But by and large, the teams making companies like Slack, LiveRamp, Medium, Earnest, MetroMile, Lyft, Okta, Pinterest, and hundreds more are damn fine people, and they are dedicating their lives to making something that creates positive change – a product or service that makes the world a better place (even if it’s in a small way). [...] When you’re facing existential threat, our tolerance for douchebaggery in the name of making more money at any cost, ....

One Map Shows Just How Expensive College Can Be for Students Making Minimum Wage
[S]ubstantial evidence that lack of information plays a critical role in shaping the financial decisions people make. Consider how a vast majority of people who are currently defaulting on their student loans in the U.S. would be able to halt their financial suffering if they knew they could enroll in an income-based repayment plan that would shrink or eliminate their monthly payments. This map goes some way toward explaining why low-income students are less likely to enroll in college. If the idea that college is a risky investment is something thats gaining traction in well-to-do circles, then surely people who hail from less fortunate backgrounds are even more inclined to think the potential price is too high. // could be seen as balance sheet recession: rising cost of education - & on other side - unable 2 pay w job u can get (asset value). Bumper payouts for housebuilding executives as market booms | Business | The Guardian
Two of Britain’s largest housebuilders, Berkeley Group and Persimmon, could hand out about £1bn to their top executives and managers in pay and bonuses over the next six years, boosted by strong UK house prices and government-subsidies for home-buyers. Tony Pidgley, founder and executive chairman at Berkeley, is expected to face tough questions on Tuesday at the group’s shareholder meeting near its headquarters in leafy Cobham, Surrey, after it emerged last month that his pay package last year was worth £23.3m. [...] Meanwhile, executives at Persimmon, the UK’s largest housebuilder, also have a Berkeley-style incentive scheme that is one of the most generous to be found at a London stock market-listed firm. [...] Berkeley’s share price has risen more than 40% since the election of a Conservative government in May, [...] [bonuses] “entirely based on short-term performance”. [...] return on equity[.][ < KPI, what gets measured gets done ] &! bbc.in/1KE0jut - Barratt Homes profits +45%

BBC News - A history of social housing
Viability assessments are commercially confidential. not even the council can have a look at them. just get yes/no, and something liking to an executive summary. >> bbc.in/1FR9JAh - The UK has a serious shortage of affordable homes. Lesley Curwen asks whether the current system - where councils do deals with developers to provide cheaper homes - is working. [...] in transparent, not accountable, no inclusion of community/tax payer. abuse of the system & situation. writing their own rules. knowing they have the leverage/upper hand due to the shortage and pressure put on councils by public due to shortage. the new-smaller bankster! Out come additional/more cost for everyone due all this. This is not a market. This is a one way game, again. Richard Duncan: The Real Risk Of A Coming Multi-Decade Global Depression - YouTube
50 year long debt super cycle & credit bubble up-held. Put. // hasnt created inflation because of Globalisation = deflationary! [3bn ppl living on $2/day] Collapse of marginal cost of labour, offsetting inflation pressure of QE/NIRP/credit creation last decades. // Will eventually haunt people back once globalisation has run its way in ~100-75 years & the world is actually flat. energy cost 0, marginal cost 0, economics of abundance. // // min 23 AND because of this deflationary pressure of globalisation, excess capacity, etc lead to wage stagnation & or pressure to work 4 less (Contractor, Werkvertrag, Zeitarbeit, self-employment, Zero Hour Contract, outsourcing) and longer, in western world. Leads inevitably 2 being pushed into recession & avoiding that authorities always pushed button 4 more credit. Credit growth prevented western world not 2 be pushed into recession in last decades. 2010 Private Sector cant drive recovery! Massive Gov stimulus needed +10 years, not austerity!

Other People's Money: Masters of the Universe or Servants of the People?: Amazon.co.uk: John Kay: 9781781254431: Books
Industry insider John Kay argues that the finance world's perceived profitability is not the creation of new wealth, but the sector's appropriation of wealth - of other people's money. The financial sector, he shows, has grown too large, detached itself from ordinary business and everyday life, and has become an industry that mostly trades with itself, talks to itself, and judges itself by reference to standards which it has itself generated. And the outside world has itself adopted those standards, bailing out financial institutions that have failed all of us through greed and mismanagement.
