The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Tory thinktank warns Elliott Johnson's parents against broader inquest | Politics | The Guardian
[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

Sugary drinks tax 'would stop millions becoming obese' - BBC News
And TV chef Jamie Oliver has campaigned for the tax saying it was the "single most important" change that could be made. The director general of the British Soft Drinks Association, Gavin Partington, said: "The hypothetical claims made in this modelling study run contrary to real-world evidence. "In fact, the soft drinks tax in Mexico has reduced average calorie intake by six calories per person per day, with no evidence that it has reduced levels of obesity." He added that other options such as reducing portion sizes or changing ingredients would be more effective.

Mental health care 'failing most people' - BBC News
Inadequate and underfunded mental health care in England is leading to thousands of "tragic and unnecessary deaths" [...] around three-quarters of people with mental health problems received no help at all. It said more needs to be done to tackle rising suicide rates. Ministers agreed with the findings, committing a £1bn extra a year by 2020 to treat a million more people. This is to come out of the £8.4bn the government has promised to the health service during this Parliament and comes on top of extra money already announced for children's services. David Cameron said the plan would help put "mental and physical healthcare on an equal footing". NHS mental health funding falls in England - FoI figures - BBC News
[ minority of patients. Can't do that with cancer treatment! Public sentiment would rip you apart. ] Figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request showed the budgets for mental health trusts fell by 2% from 2013/14 to 2014/15. This compares to a rise of 2.6% in hospital trusts' operating budgets, according to analysis by the Health Foundation think-tank. The Department of Health said mental health care funding overall was rising. In the year to April 2016 the budget for mental health trusts was projected to rise just 0.3%. Of the 53 out of 59 mental health trusts in England which responded to the FOI request, 29 said their budget would be lower this year than last. Syria refugee crisis: six charts that show how Europe is struggling to respond | World news | The Guardian
Of the 1.2 million asylum applications filed, 356,805 were from Syrian applicants. The number of first-time applicants has grown hugely in the past five years. The increase in the number of people seeking asylum in Europe has been driven primarily by applications from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. [...] In Germany, one of the few EU countries to have reported full-year figures for 2015, there were almost 442,000 first-time asylum applications in 2015 alone: over a third of these by Syrians. Going through paperwork takes time, though; the country registered 428,468 Syrian arrivals last year. As a proportion of population, the most applications have been received in Hungary (649 applications per 100,000 population), Sweden (528 per 100,000 population) and Austria (where there were 273 applications per 100,000 population up to the end of November). //&! bit.ly/1o5FdLQ // Cameron Pays Up to keep them away and voters happy - bit.ly/1R3rJf5 &! bit.ly/1Kr9kqZ

The upsetting reality of modern day poverty
My food budget? About £45 a week. [...] You see, to Jamie Oliver, a £20 shoulder of lamb is "cheap", because it can do two meals and it’s not the leg, so costs less per kilo. Two meals, Jamie? For 20 bloody quid, I want at least four meals. It’s a sad day when I get angry at Jamie Oliver for being a pretentious, arrogant prick. [...] I can’t afford to smoke. I don’t know many people who can. I have bars of soap next to my sinks and I am able to use them to good effect. I am not dirty. I am relatively poor. There is a difference. [...] The reality is eating plain boiled rice and pretending to like it, so the kids don’t know there’s no other food except for what is on their plates. [...] The reality of poverty is the shame of always having to say, “Sorry, I can’t afford it.” [...] I’ll make you a coffee, but only if you don’t have sugar – that’s a luxury we only buy in if we’re going to make a cake.

England's medical chief gives stark alcohol warning - BBC News
England's chief medical officer says people must take personal responsibility for their drinking and consider cancer risks with each glass. Dame Sally Davies said when she reaches for a glass of wine she questions whether she wants the wine or to raise her risk of breast cancer. Speaking at a science and technology committee hearing, she urged other people to do the same. It comes as official UK figures show alcohol-related deaths are rising. //&! The Mexicans dying for a fizzy drink - BBC News
Mexicans consume more carbonated drinks per person than any other nation, and the country has one of the world's highest rates of childhood obesity. Two years ago the government introduced a tax on sugary drinks - but is it working? [...] So what do the big US brands make of Mexico's approach? Hank Cardello of the Obesity Solutions Initiative, an industry-funded lobby group in Washington DC, cracks open a can of diet ginger ale and tells us. "You have to look at ways of expanding the tool kit of solutions," he says. "The typical regulatory tool kit is tax, ban, limit, constrain - those kinds of anti-growth words, if you would. They're anathema to what the companies have to do. "We should ban the word 'should'. It's like a parent talking to a child. 'You should eat better, you should do this.' "No. When broccoli tastes like a cheeseburger, I'll eat more broccoli. You don't lecture to people to get them to change."

[ trapped by populism and UKIP (he followed into Brexit), as Career Politician and general election 2015 saving point ] In open letter to PM, more than 120 leading economists including former UN and World Bank officials say UK can do far more. [...] David Cameron’s government has agreed to take up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over five years, from the camps on the borders of the war-torn country. More than 1,000 have arrived so far. The numbers are dwarfed by the 1.1 million refugees taken in by Germany last year and 160,000 in Sweden, the highest in Europe as a proportion of the population. Can call centre therapy solve the NHS mental health crisis? | Society | The Guardian
Fast-track treatment aims to ease growing problem in the UK, but critics say it is the clinical equivalent to online dating [...] [ mental health - a mental health crisis ] This is no fringe issue in the health of the nation. The NHS believes people with mental health problems die 15 to 20 years earlier than the average, but the system is struggling to cope. Lord Layard, a government adviser on mental health, identified mental health problems as “the biggest causes of misery in Britain today”, with an estimated 6 million people affected. [ needs massive investment, no call centres ] [...] Meanwhile 40% of mental health trusts saw spending cuts over the past two years and fewer than one in eight people who suffered a mental health crisis said they received appropriate care in 2015, according to the Care Quality Commission. The regulator concluded this was “unsafe and inherently unfair”. [ referring complex cases to call centre is neglect and malpractice ]

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. [...] That episode, like the vote on student grants, is consistent with a pattern displayed by this government of impatience with democratic norms, verging on contempt. One habit is bundling measures of primary importance up in secondary legislation. [...] lay the foundations for a long-term Conservative monopoly on government.

Dr Paul Glover, the regional clinical lead on organ donation, said he believes the bill "in isolation" will fail. "It will have to be underpinned by education," he said. "We have to have society talking about organ donations, talking to family, making their wishes known. "This is about changing society - it's not about saying this is the law, therefore this is what we must do. This is about the positivity of it, coming from society up." //&! bbc.in/1mITlJW &! bbc.in/1UzVe6A

Weather records: December was 'wettest month for UK' - BBC News
Storms propelled by the jet stream were mainly to blame, it says, with contributions from the El Nino weather phenomenon and man-made climate change. December was something of a freak month, it acknowledges. Climate change has raised UK temperatures by around 1C (1.8F) so far, so it will be many decades before this level of extreme weather becomes the new winter norm, it says. Other scientists say that with climate change, there will be no "normal" weather. //&! Storms Desmond and Eva flooded 16,000 homes in England - bbc.in/1O4iNTC + Frank mainly in Scotland. //&! Storm Frank: What have we done to make the flooding worse? - BBC News
[Strom Eva, Desmond, Frank, ... building code has to be reviewed. new buildings have to be raised, first floor ~1m above ground. no basement. also, roofs have to resist gale winds easily ] Policy-makers are often keen to see brownfield land used for residential development, but these areas are often most vulnerable to flooding. Demand from buyers has fuelled this growth, too. You might assume that there would be huge drops in property prices after highly publicised floods. But in places like Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, and Cockermouth, Cumbria, which experienced heavy flooding in 2007 and 2009 respectively, prices have remained largely unaffected in the long run. [...] "We've tended to straighten rivers, to canalise them, to embank them and all that rushes the water down to the nearby urban pinch point," explains environmentalist and writer George Monbiot, adding that the flow of water should be slowed down and the rivers lengthened instead.

'Grief and anxiety are not mental illnesses' - BBC News
Psychiatric diagnoses are not only scientifically invalid, they are harmful too. The language of illness implies that the roots of such emotional distress lie in abnormalities in our brain and biology, usually known as "chemical imbalances". This leads us to be blind to the social and psychological causes of distress. More importantly, we tend to prescribe medical solutions - anti-depressants and anti-psychotic medication - despite significant side-effects and poor evidence of their effectiveness. This is wrong. We should not be diagnosing many more people with meaningless "mental illnesses", telling them these stem from brain abnormalities, and prescribing medication.

Suspended BBC journalist breaks silence over Tyson Fury comments · PinkNews
[ Platforming, see paris lees on Germaine Greer and platforming for wrong people ... ] The Newsline journalist was since suspended, and had previously said he was not allowed to comment on the controversy. But in a new YouTube video, West did comment, saying: “I’m not really meant to say anything, but I wanted to just say that I chose between being an objective journalist and being a human being with thoughts and opinions with principles.” He went on: “I shouldn’t have given my opinion on something that was current” but said that at the same time he “couldn’t forget the little boy I was when I was nine or 10 at school and I was being bullied for being camp and being gay”. The video now appears to have been deleted from West’s YouTube page.
