Pando: Female founders, and when good intentions go bad
Last year, I got some well-meaning advice from someone who has generally been very supportive of me and Pando. He told me that I needed to soften my image and tone down my language if I wanted Pando to appeal to more readers in middle America. They don’t like to see an opinionated, mouthy woman swearing. He meant well. But the comment wasn’t too different than an email I got after a recent appearance on Fox News on a Sunday morning, which told me my points were incredibly smart, but this viewer simply couldn’t take any woman seriously unless she wore a string of pearls. Could I please wear pearls next time?

Film producer shares shocking intros for women in scripts - BBC Newsbeat
Jennifer Lawrence triggered a big debate on gender inequality and Hollywood sexism last October. She said she got mad at herself for failing to negotiate when she found out she was getting paid less than her male co-stars. The Hunger Games actress said there was "an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight". British actress Rachel Weisz told Newsbeat she thinks there's a difference between stories for male and female characters in cinema. "Women are actually not allowed to be difficult, interesting, complex, three-dimensional," she said. "Female characters have to be sweeter and more likeable than a male character would have to be." //&! bit.ly/1QfkFNB

Taylor Swift an 'obnoxious Nazi Barbie', writes Camille Paglia | Music | The Guardian
Feminist writer says singer – with her ‘girl squad’ – perpetuates elitism and reminds her of ‘fascist blondes’ of her youth. Camille Paglia has written a scathing critique of Taylor Swift, referring to the singer as an “obnoxious Nazi Barbie” whose “twinkly persona is such a scary flashback to the fascist blondes who ruled the social scene during my youth”. Paglia, known for seminal feminist works such as Sexual Personae, criticised the singer for perpetuating elitism and undermining female empowerment by surrounding herself with a group of girls who were simply “performance props”. Swift is known as the ringleader of a sisterhood of actors, models and singers, such as Selena Gomez, Lena Dunham, Cara Delevingne and Karlie Kloss, who Swift often refers to as her “girl squad”. Many joined the singer on stage during her tour for her latest album, 1989. Paglia, 68, condemned this as “exhibitionist overkill” by the singer.

Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

New Statesman cover on childless female politicians provokes heated online debate | Politics | The National
The article won praise too though for highlighting the discrepancy between the proportions of male and female MPs who are parents, [...] 45 per cent of female MPs were childless, compared with 28 per cent of men. Helen Lewis, deputy editor of the New Statesman, who wrote the piece, urged people to read it before criticising, while pointing out that it analysed why both motherhood and childlessness caused problems for women in politics. [...] The analysis was published the week after a row erupted when the Labour MP Helen Goodman wrote in a blog that she was backing Yvette Cooper for leader because she was a mother. // [ Cheap shots. Ellen Pao Says Silicon Valley Isn’t A Meritocracy. It’s Not. | TechCrunch
Pao also took issue with the “pipeline issue” excuse for not hiring diversely. “I hate the pipeline issue,” Pao said. “It allows people to say, ‘I’m doing my best, it’s out of my hands. There’s a whole slew of things that can make it more fair.'” Swisher said she felt the same way about unconscious bias: It allows people to absolve themselves of responsibility for bias. Pao said she did not think Silicon Valley, a place where it’s possible to have all white male meetings all day every day, was a meritocracy. “I think SV aspires to be a true meritocracy … but there is not an even track to success. Why Anne-Marie Slaughter thinks the next phase of the ‘Women’s Movement’ must be a ‘Men’s Movement’ (Video) - Bizwomen
You may know Slaughter from her 2012 viral story in The Atlantic titled " Why Women Still Can't Have It All." Many of the thoughts expressed in that article — that superhuman qualities are required to be both a perfect mother and a top professional. [...] Slaughter said workplaces need to be "customizable" so employees feel they can work to serve both their family in a caregiving role and the company in a competitive role. Men need to be allowed the same flexibility as women, she said. "We've revolutionized women's lives over my lifetime. If you're going to move women into the workplace, you have to move men into the home to get real equality. We haven't changed men's lives in nearly the ways we've changed women's." Slaughter's advice to women and men is to build a career through interval training, taking time to work very hard at your job and then slowing down to take time for your personal life, reminding everyone that it's not all about an immediate race to the top.

When no gender fits: A quest to be seen as just a person - The Washington Post
“I don’t want to be a girl wearing boy’s clothes, nor do I want to be a girl who presents as a boy,” Kelsey wrote. “I just want to be a person who is recognized as a person. That’s how I’m most comfortable. I’m just a person wearing people clothes, who likes to look like myself and have others see me how I see me.” In Kelsey’s mind, the body that would feel right wasn’t the body Kelsey had now. Kelsey wanted a redistribution of muscle, less on the hips and more in the upper body. A lower voice, though not too much — not to where it would sound like a man’s. Neutral.

For These Millennials, Gender Norms Have Gone Out Of Style : NPR
More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 agree that gender does not have to define a person in the way that it used to[.] And 6 in 10 say that men & women do not need to conform to traditional gender roles or behaviors anymore. [...] defying gender expectations. "This generation views gender as a mark of self-expression — they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self," she says. For example, Rae Tutera, who will appear in an upcoming documentary produced by Lena Dunham about gender nonconformity in fashion, says that the first time she felt like herself was in a men's suit. Tutera, 29, says she is "on the masculine side of the gender spectrum." [...] "Sometimes you have to act braver than you feel," she says, remembering what it felt like to enter a fancy men's suit store in Manhattan. [ ... but ...] most [vast majority of] millennials don't push gender boundaries. [...] [M]illennials are considering the ways in which gender might be flexible. [+See Comments!]

21 Women on the Dumbest Things They’ve Bought -- The Cut
“I have this really bad habit of thinking that because I am a ‘professional woman,’ I need all of this stuff to make me really BE that woman. [...] “Trendy clothes. [...] When I moved to New York, I had this really fucking dumb Carrie Bradshaw ideal of how I should dress and act. I thought that it was normal to spend a bunch of money on trendy shoes, [...] My brain can’t accept that it will never own Manolos if I also want to own a home someday.” [...] I spend money on makeup, blowouts, and nail art, in huge part for the Instagram likes. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.

Women In Tech: It’s Not Just A Pipeline Problem | TechCrunch
Between ages 25 and 30, 41% of the young talent with credentials in those subject matters are female … [but] 52% of this talent drops out … The most important antigen is the machismo that continues to permeate these work environments … 63% of women in science, engineering and technology have experienced sexual harassment. [...] If you create an environment wherein a whole class of entrepreneurs and employees goes unnoticed by deeply flawed industry-wide “pattern recognition” heuristics, and/or one where they have to be perpetually on their guard, and must pretend not to notice all the myriad microaggressions that make them feel vulnerable and uncomfortable and out-of-place then many of those entrepreneurs and employees will decide, rightly, that the tech industry is not worth the hassle and grief. + http://craigconnects.org/2014/08/why-men-must-lean-in-to-support-womens-leadership-2.html

Study Finds Something Disturbing Happens to Kids Forced into Traditional Gender Roles - Mic
The idea that gender is "imposed" on a person might be confusing to some people, particularly those who have always felt at home in their bodies. But a study conducted by the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of Women and Gender proves Cox's point, concluding that children "with fixed ideas about what should be considered 'masculine' and 'feminine,' can actually be detrimental to their physical and mental health," according to ThinkProgress writer Tara Culp-Ressler.  >> http://thinkprogress.org/health/2014/08/07/3468380/gender-roles-health-risks // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit_identity_theory

How Guardians Of The Galaxy Triumphed Over The Film Industry's Backwards Thinking - CinemaBlend.com
This is a kind of sexism that is often overlooked as harmless stereotyping. But that locked-in concept of gender expectation was a roadblock for Perlman again and again, until Marvel trusted in her passion and talent, so overlooked any preconceived notions based on her sex. To Marvel Entertainment's credit, their filmmakers overcame institutional sexism biases to trust in the writer over her gender identity. And because they did, we--all of us--get a movie that by nearly all accounts is astounding and a hell of a good time.

The female Pinterest engineer who pressed tech giants to air embarrassing diversity numbers - San Francisco Business Times

"Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" One major fact that advocates say must be addressed is that far fewer young women than men are learning computer science while in school. // http://www.codedoc.co/directors-thoughts/

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr

Memo to my daughter: “Keep your eye on the ball and hit hard” | PandoDaily
What I love about Abramson’s [...] she’s named it, she’s owned it, but she doesn’t make herself a victim. She knows she lives in a sexist world and that makes her victories– and even her defeats– that much sweeter. This is how we should talk about women in the world. Not stupid debates about having it all. Taking the world as it exists, naming it, shrugging, and continuing to fight. // +++ // http://www.newrepublic.com/article/118735/problem-esquires-praise-42-year-old-women-amy-poehler "entrenched short-sightedness and sexist cruelty of male-controlled media [...] Yay, thanks for some crumbs of enlightened thinking, for some slightly nuanced improvements in the daily, punishing business of publicly evaluating and then reevaluating women’s worth. The Future of Pando | Ugly.
The fact is, I’m getting a total pass for something I have repeatedly said was my responsibility, while my female business partner is receiving the full blame. It seems to me that either the person or persons spreading the smears about Pando has decided that a female employer is deserving of abuse and scorn in a way that a male boss isn’t, or they’ve cynically concluded that a female boss presents a much easier target for an Internet hate campaign. [...] In the past 72 hours, I’ve come to truly realize what female founders and CEOs in our industry deal with every day of their lives. That it took me this long to understand is another of my many failings. The ugliness has to stop. [ It is easier, faster to bash the weaker sex. especially if the women on top is not apologetic. it seems. men + anonymity of internet and the non-attachment, non-face-to-face situation, feel the urge to say stuff like X, about Sarah Lacy and the other week about Marissa Mayer, who overslept. ]

Do Not Despise Your Inner World: Advice on a Full Life from Philosopher Martha Nussbaum | Brain Pickings
Martha Nussbaum - Our emotional life maps our incompleteness: A creature without any needs would never have reasons for fear, or grief, or hope, or anger. But for that very reason we are often ashamed of our emotions, and of the relations of need and dependency bound up with them. Perhaps males, in our society, are especially likely to be ashamed of being incomplete and dependent, because a dominant image of masculinity tells them that they should be self-sufficient and dominant. So people flee from their inner world of feeling, and from articulate mastery of their own emotional experiences. The current psychological literature on the life of boys in America indicates that a large proportion of boys are quite unable to talk about how they feel and how others feel — because they have learned to be ashamed of feelings and needs, and to push them underground.
