Learning disability 'trapped' in hospitals as NHS target missed - BBC News
Figures for March show that there are at least 2,260 people with learning disabilities or autism staying in hospitals in England - most for around two years, with half being kept in secure wards. [...] But charity Mencap said "hundreds of people with a learning disability who should have been living in the community are still trapped in in-patient settings".

The charity said families were often powerless to get them out and people could be locked up for years on end, instead of being supported in their communities.

Spending cuts breach UK's human rights obligations, says report | Society | The Guardian
Cuts to public services and benefits that disproportionately affect the least well-off, single parents and disabled people put the government in breach of its human rights obligations, a study for the UK equalities watchdog has found.

Echoing the recent findings of the UN special rapporteur on extreme poverty, Philip Alston, the study concluded the scale of the cuts and their lopsided impact on the most disadvantaged were a policy choice, rather than inevitable.

The report Alston published earlier this month said the UK government had made a political choice to let what he called “punitive, mean-spirited, and often callous” austerity policies fall disproportionately on the poorest.

Alston said the UK was in breach of four UN human rights agreements relating to women, children, disabled people, and economic and social rights.

US quits 'biased' UN human rights council - BBC News
The US has pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council, calling it a "cesspool of political bias".

The "hypocritical and self-serving" body "makes a mockery of human rights", said US envoy to the UN Nikki Haley.

Ms Haley last year accused the council of "chronic anti-Israel bias" and said the US was reviewing its membership.

Formed in 2006, the Geneva-based council has been criticised for allowing countries with questionable human rights records to be members.

But activists said the US move could hurt efforts to monitor and address human rights abuses around the world.

How Europe's far right fell in love with Australia's immigration policy | World news | The Guardian
Espersen has studied Australia’s Pacific solution in detail, so I pushed him: where would your Nauru be? “Morocco is a very good example of a country that would possibly do it for an amount of money,” he claims. And Danish staff could run the camps. “We would run the things ourselves and pay the Moroccan authority a fee. We would also make it possible for their local grocers or butchers to come and deliver goods … There will be excellent service, I can assure you.” In the Danish right’s offshore paradise, there would be education, too. Nobody will be “living in ratholes”, he promises. [...] As with Australia and its offshore centres, what happens in Libya stays in Libya while Europe washes its hands of responsibility. If the flow of migrants surges again during the next war or climate crisis, the clamour for offshoring will only grow louder. And if the Australian model is adopted more fully in Europe, then there will be no hope for legitimate refugees to claim asylum through legal channels, and more of them will seek illegal paths to Europe.

Employment tribunal fees unlawful, Supreme Court rules - BBC News
Fees for those bringing employment tribunal claims have been ruled unlawful, and the government will now have to repay up to £32m to claimants.
The government introduced fees of up to £1,200 in 2013 to reduce the number of malicious and weak cases, but that led to a 79% reduction over three years.
Trade union Unison argued the fees prevented workers accessing justice.
The Ministry of Justice said the government would take immediate steps to stop charging and refund payments.
The Supreme Court ruled the government was acting unlawfully and unconstitutionally when it introduced the fees.

The report comes after former Minister for Women and Equalities Nicky Morgan warned that leaving the EU may cause a ‘legal tangle’ for equality legislation.

“But one of the things that hasn’t really been explored is the legal tangle that will result if we were to leave the EU. Some of the anti-discrimination provisions that come from the EU, that we have adopted into UK law… what happens to those?”

Ukip: Britain should be able to send back 'beggars or criminals' from EU | Politics | The Guardian
The UK should have the right not to let EU citizens stay if they “do not work, never pay taxes or are beggars or criminals”, a senior Ukip spokesman has said.

Gerard Batten, an MEP with responsibility for Ukip’s Brexit policy, suggested on Monday that the UK should have the discretion to refuse some EU citizens the right to stay and backed Theresa May’s decision not to give any guarantees without reciprocal deals from other EU countries. Bathroom predator myth defeats transgender rights in New Hampshire.
But in the end, the bathroom predator myth still won out. House Republican leadership insisted that a trans nondiscrimination law would somehow allow sexual predators to rape women and children in public bathrooms. And anti-LGBTQ advocates overwhelmed legislators over the weekend with anti-trans rants, alleging that a vote for the bill would lead to more sexual assault. The bathroom predator myth, of course, is wholly fictional, a canard concocted to dress up religious objections to trans rights in secular pretext. Yet by sheer force of repetition, activists have managed to convince legislators that this fabrication might be a legitimate concern, introducing ersatz ambiguity into the discussion—and giving representatives cover to oppose trans rights.

A hard truth for Leave voters: Brexit means big government
Britain has seen a renaissance in jobs since 2013, of that there is no doubt. But most of those extra jobs were among the self-employed or fell into categories that can only be described as insecure and low-paid. When companies finally took the plunge and advertised full-time jobs from 2014 onwards, around a third went to migrants. [...] It is this mostly older group of workers across the developed world, worried about their pay, pensions and conditions of employment, that want to slam the brakes on globalisation and reject the remedy proposed by big business: greater labour-market flexibility and only limited job protections. "But," he added, "we can't say that now, we have to say that as part of the negotiation that will shortly take place." //&! The leave campaign insists EU nationals already in Britain would be able to stay – but immigration lawyers say it’s not so simple - - Vienna convention has not been tested and would have to be interpreted by the courts [...] an inevitable consequence of the Brexit campaign is that people will need new documentary evidence of their right to remain [residency test]. [...] Points system could be applied to EEA residents already living here. [...] [keep P60's] [solving the heap of shit needs new law].

Who is more liberal – May or Gove? | Politics | The Guardian
&! Theresa May [...] pledge to unite country [...] vows to make sure Britain leaves EU, saying there must be no attempts to ‘remain through the back door’ [...] She attempted to woo leave voters by signing up Chris Grayling, a prominent leave campaigner, to chair her campaign and pledging to create a department for Brexit to negotiate the UK leaving the EU. After the meeting, other prominent Conservatives signed up to support May. Jeremy Hunt, the health secretary, declared his support after having considered a bid himself. [also said no emergency budget more austerity = no Osborne! and no scrapping of human rights act] [she is moving the centre to centre right right. In language already.][and not sticking zero immigration on her vest] -

CrazyRussianHacker, Plagiarist and DMCA abuser! #WTFU // // So when I first made a video showing that CrazyRussianHackers idea about using dry ice for an air conditioner was basically suicidal, I really didnt think anything would come of it. Then recently he filed a DMCA takedown of my video. This resulted in a strike against my account and me losing access to certain features.

Now thats a special brand of idiot who makes a video about a suicidal way to chill the air, then files a baseless copyright takedown of the only warning about how dumb that idea is. Especially against a guy like me who has a history of fighting DMCA abuse! [ people have yet to be sued in court for DMCA abuse, it is a felony ]

Workers or Shirkers? Ian Hislop's Victorian Benefits
An entertaining, provocative film in which Ian explores the colourful history behind one of the most explosive issues of our times - welfare: who deserves to be helped, and who doesn't. [... ] all hate, no heart. just spreadsheets. at Whitehall, no 11. [...] Benefit Street = victorian freak show/circus of curiosities [...] writing about others, "othering" them. demonising them or putting them on pedestals, making them saints. [...] IDS "a single mother wo aspiration is a product of the system" would correct that, a product of her environment (society) [ie gentrification - poor living w poor door to door. and everyone is looking down on them.].
