Badly-behaved surgeons are putting patients' lives in danger due to 'culture of bullying', report finds
The Sunday Telegraph says trainee surgeons have complained that an endemic culture of bullying among senior colleagues is putting patients' lives at risk.
The paper says some surgeons have reported being assaulted during operations for raising safety concerns, and an atmosphere of fear is said to be leading to failures in concentration that directly harm patients.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! Reduce £775m bill for temporary Whitehall staff, MPs say
[asking an Apple to be a Pear and then a Banana] But a Cabinet Office spokesman said: "This government is scrutinising spend like never before. We've stamped out excessive spending on consultants and put in place stringent spending controls. The total spend on consultants is still less than half of that in 2009-10."
He said the department was "actively building" skills but sometimes needed specialist expertise quickly on complex projects.
"But we only do this when the key skills are not readily available within the Civil Service and where it delivers better value for taxpayers," he added. //&! Whitehall consultants on £1,000-£2,000 per day - bbc.in/1vi8c0B

Piketty: EU should welcome one million immigrants a year
"The European Union has the capacity to absorb a large flow of migrants, one million per year in terms of inflow net of outflow," he said.
"This is exactly what we had between 2000 and 2010 and this was working in the sense that unemployment was being reduced.
"The problem is - with the austerity policies and with the recession - now we are in a situation where it's very difficult in particular with southern Europe, with the terrible economic situation that we have created there in particular." [...] The population of the EU has only risen by 0.2% a year since 1995, he argues, compared to 1.2% for the world's population over the same period.
According to Eurostat, the official statistical arm of the European Commission, a total of 3.4 million people came to the EU during 2013. Some 2.8 million left, leaving a net immigration figure of around 600,000. [S]low growth [...] exacerbated not just by a lack of immigration but also by austerity policies aimed at reducing public expenditure. [EU in recession 2011 forward]

JJ Abrams' Bad Robot introduces diversity quota | Film | The Guardian
“We’ve been working to improve our internal hiring practices for a while, but the Oscars controversy was a wake-up call to examine our role in expanding opportunities internally at Bad Robot and externally with our content and partners,” said Abrams. “We’re working to find a rich pool of representative, kick-ass talent and give them the opportunity they deserve and we can all benefit from. It’s good for audiences and it’s good for the bottom line.” Bad Robot will reportedly work with its agency partner CAA and studios Warner Bros and Paramount to ensure women and minorities are submitted for writing, directing and acting jobs for the company in direct proportion to their representation among the US population.

UK consumes far less than a decade ago – 'peak stuff' or something else? | Business | The Guardian
From crops to energy and metals, average material consumption fell from 15 tonnes in 2001 to just over 10 tonnes in 2013 [...] UK households have also abandoned buying many resource-intensive goods common in the recent past – such as metal-heavy video recorders and hi-fi systems, vinyl records, CDs and books – as they shift to digital consumption. [...] The figures will spark fresh speculation that Britain and other developed economies have hit ‘peak stuff’, although some critics pour scorn on the quality of the ONS’s environmental accounts. In January, Ikea said the appetite of western consumers for home furnishings had reached its peak and consumption of many familiar goods was at its limit. Household spending on physical goods, including furnishings, clothing, cars and gadgets, decreased between 2002/03 and 2014, [...] Households now spend more on services than physical goods, he said. [...] [ saturation in some markets but we are not living in peak stuff ]

Employers advertising for jobs using sex based descriptions could be prosecuted | Daily Mail Online
Businesses warned not to hire someone based on sex, age or nationality Asking for a Polish builder or a 'barmaid' could land employers in hot water Warning comes after latest guidelines were issued on the Equality Act Advertising for 'mature' candidate or 'recent graduate' could breach rules [...] It further warns that adverts that imply a particular age group, such as those that might call for someone who is 'mature' or a 'recent graduate', would breach the regulations. Other examples of adverts that may break the law would be those who call for particular strengths, such as being tall, as this could be discriminatory against women.
What’s so bad about mandatory workplace socializing? - Quartz
For working parents and people with limited disposable income, the cost of mandatory socializing can be prohibitive. There’s ample evidence that companies with strong cultures are more productive. But when hiring managers appraise job candidates for cultural fit, they don’t actually look for people who align with organizational values. Instead, they select the people who are most like them, as Northwestern University professor of management Lauren Rivera writes in The New York Times. Evaluating someone based on a shared affinity for kayaking, homebrew, and polo is a great way to choose a roommate or a fraternity member. But putting cultural fit first at work often means ignoring the role that class, race and gender play in shaping our hobbies, college backgrounds, and tastes.

There’s so much to protest against. How to keep up? | Barbara Ellen | Opinion | The Guardian
On the eve of a House of Lords vote, more than 30 charities, including Mencap, Parkinson’s UK and Mind, plus peers, including Paralympian Tanni Grey-Thompson, have criticised the cuts (which would in effect reduce ESA to ordinary jobseeker level), arguing that they would put the disabled under increased pressure and make it harder for them to find work. [...] This is what matters at present – however dutifully the Labour party opposes cuts, the Tories clearly feel “unopposed” and thus free to continue unleashing their bombardments. People like me may also owe the shamed, battered Liberal Democrats an apology – during their time in coalition perhaps they did put the brakes on the worst excesses of Tory policy.

Criminal record disclosure checks ruled 'unlawful' - BBC News
Two people who claimed their careers were being blighted by having to disclose their minor criminal convictions to employers have won their case at the High Court. The court ruled the criminal record checks scheme used in England and Wales was "arbitrary" and unlawful. People across the UK are forced to have their criminal record divulged when applying for certain jobs. The Home Office said it would consider whether to appeal against the decision. Lawyers for the pair had told the High Court that people were being unfairly disadvantaged throughout their lives by convictions for minor criminal offences committed years beforehand. It's about having the right mix of skills. Trusts need to recruit and retain highly trained senior staff too. [...] Royal College of Nursing chief executive Janet Davies said hospitals were trying to catch up on their staffing levels. She told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "We went through a period of time where we were trying to save money. We cut posts, we didn't train enough nurses and we're still feeling the effect of that. //&! bbc.in/1YzZtQV

Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

Fake Cover Letters Expose Discrimination Against Disabled - The New York Times
Employers appear to discriminate against well-qualified job candidates who have a disability. [...] Experienced workers are also more likely to interact with clients on a regular basis. Regardless of whether these concerns are legitimate, said Dr. Schur, “employers see these people as riskier.” The researchers found that the decline in interest in disabled workers was roughly the same whether the disability was a spinal cord injury or Asperger’s.

Scotland's environment in 'serious trouble' - BBC News
The report is a follow up to the 2013 State Of Nature UK-wide report, which warned that 60% of 3,148 species studied had declined in past 50 years, and 31% had declined strongly. More than one in 10 of all species assessed were under threat of disappearing from the UK's shores altogether. [...] "As NGOs, we naturally asked ourselves 'What should be done about that?' "This report seeks to answer that question, and is based on a year's interactive research with a wide range of experts - both in wildlife ecology and in policy development and delivery. "The conclusion is not one of despair, but we must act with urgency to create a common course to save wildlife and the natural environment."

Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

The disabled and jobless need help, not harassment | Barbara Ellen | Comment is free | The Guardian
No one wants to stop disabled people working, to patronise or stereotype them, or condemn them to a life in the shadows. Welfare to work programme failing disabled and ill jobseekers, say charities | Politics | The Guardian
Government urged to overhaul Work Programme and refocus on offering support to mentally ill people instead of putting pressure on them to find jobs [...] Companies delivering the >> Work Programme << admitted it had been hard to find employment for many jobseekers in this category and more investment was needed to prepare them to move off benefits and into work. [...] A performance briefing by the ERSA, the trade body for Work Programme provider companies and charities, said: “It should be remembered that many of the jobseekers in this group will never have received intensive employment support before and are a considerable distance from the labour market. “Performance in this group is rising, but it is going to take far longer to help these jobseekers back into employment.”

Illness and disability are not matters of employment, but of health. The more you pursue happiness, the faster it runs from you | Zach Stafford | Comment is free | The Guardian
Psychologist Iris Mauss at the University of California, Berkley found that the pursuit of happiness might just leave you worse off. “Wanting to be happy can make you less happy,” said Mauss in an interview with livescience.com. “If you explicitly and purposely focus on happiness, that appears to have a self-defeating quality.” [...] In her studies, participants who were not happy would begin blaming themselves for feeling sad. They thought it was an immediate flag for their failure, making these negative feelings even more counter-productive. The people who accepted these negative feelings as normal, however, were much happier in the long run. So, accepting your sadness could actually make you feel good. [...] For Darwin, emotions were very much tied to surviving, which requires more than just happiness. [...] Be open about how you’re feeling, don’t try to hide behind it or conceal it. // &! keeping a diary talking to and about yourself compassionately.

Britain’s mental health is in crisis – a shadow minister can’t tackle it alone | Matt Haig | Comment is free | The Guardian
At the risk of sounding totally utopian, I’d like to see not just a minister for mental health, but the whole government addressing these issues. Option Games: Common Stock Values Get Murkier — The Information
Valuing common stock has gotten trickier for startups. How Legal Immigration Failed Silicon Valley | TechCrunch
Our immigration system hinders entrepreneurship, innovation and productivity. Success in the tech industry, where whole new job categories are created overnight, requires deep familiarity with trends, products and technologies. Learning opportunities abound — if you’re willing to transition to new roles, educate yourself, work on different products or switch companies altogether. Building your own startup, or even joining one, can be the best career move; it offers remarkable potential for growth by wearing multiple hats in an expanding organization. The labor market benefits from this flexibility not just with an improved and adaptable workforce, but also one that creates jobs. The immigration process impedes all these possibilities. NHS staff offered Zumba to keep well - BBC News
Simon Stevens will outline his £5m solution for cutting the NHS bill for staff sickness, which currently stands at £2.4bn a year. He will say hospitals can help staff stay well by serving healthy food and running Zumba and yoga classes. He will add that GPs should be offered specialist support to avoid burnout. Creating healthy and supportive workplaces is no longer a "nice to have, it's a must do", he will tell the NHS Innovation Expo conference in Manchester. Organisations will be asked to provide staff access to physiotherapy, smoking cessation and weight management services, as well as sports or exercise classes. And they should offer health checks for mental health and musculoskeletal problems - the two biggest causes of sickness absence across the NHS. 'Demanding jobs' Mr Stevens will say: "NHS staff have some of the most critical but demanding jobs in the country.
