'Bed-blocking' in Scottish hospitals falls by 9.6% - BBC News
About 400 people were left in hospital because the social care support they needed in order to live in their own home was not available, while more than 200 had to wait for a place in a nursing home.
Of those who could not leave hospital in September 2017, 1,140 had to wait for for more than three days.
A third of delayed patients had to wait in hospital for more than six weeks - a 2% increase from last year, despite the fall in the figures overall.

Psychiatrist vacancies 'double in four years' in England - BBC News
Attracting students
Prof Burn said the rise in vacancies was down to the difficulty in recruiting psychiatrists.
At the same time, more posts were being created for consultant psychiatrists as mental illness moved up the health agenda, but there were no specialists to fill them, she said.
She said medical schools need to broaden their pool of applicants in order to get more psychiatrists into the workplace.
"We are keen that medical schools should take in people studying psychology A-level - because they will be more likely to end up as psychiatrists."
It takes 13 years to train as a consultant psychiatrist.

Doctors to breathalyse smokers before allowing them NHS surgery | Society | The Guardian
He said that by introducing “increasingly harsher policies” CCGs might believe they were alleviating financial pressure but they could actually cost more in the long term because of the risk of complications and the cost of healthcare in the interim. The CCGs said no financial savings were expected as a result of the measures, which they claimed were aimed at improving the long-term health of residents. They also stressed that if at any time the harm of waiting for surgery outweighed the benefit of losing weight or stopping smoking, then the patient would be referred.

Jeremy Hunt considers barring walk-in patients from A&E | Society | The Guardian
“We know that the main issue contributing to pressures in A&E is not inappropriate attendance, but a lack of hospital beds, and a lack of the community support services patients need when they are discharged, so they end up staying in hospital for longer than they needed to.” [...] She added: “Maybe a pilot will identify some good ways of reducing genuinely inappropriate use of A&E, but that this idea is even circulating speaks volumes about the consequences of the government’s decision to underfund the NHS. The chancellor must take note, and respond in his budget next month.”

Telephone consultations - no cost savings, but increased GP workload by BMJ talk medicine
Independent evaluation result (v private company claims) = no savings, increased workload. OVERALL outcome slightly increases 8% in workload. But screening (triage) is a disincentive for some. Big variation in attitude. And one size fits not all. eg teachers can't receive a phone call during day, another issue could might be (time will tell) detecting sepsis, angina and other stuff that needs to see doc urgently till its too late. easier diagnostic seeing patient eg how ill they look. Data on NHS waiting lists in Scotland ‘suggests interference’ | Scotland | The Times & The Sunday Times
[ar politicians meddling with the statistics?] The UK Statistics Authority, the official regulator, has looked into a complaint about the publication of waiting list information by the Scottish NHS and concluded that staff made “a series of misjudged decisions”. They accuse the statistics arm of NHS Scotland — the Information Services Division (ISD) — of “catering more for the needs of policy officials” than patients. &! http://www.heraldscotland.com/news/15562974.Scotland__39_s_health_data_body_rebuked_over_way_data_on_waiting_times_was_presented/ - It was concerned figures given by the Information Services Division (ISD) did not give a full picture of the scale of the problem and that patients returning for treatment, as well as first time patients, had to endure long waits.

NHS Grampian in heart patients deal with Newcastle hospital - BBC News
In May the health board said it could not meet the Scottish government's target 12-week timescale for all patients to be given planned surgery. It also said it had been forced to start prioritising the most urgent cases. The issue was raised with the Scottish government by Tory MSP Jamie Halcro Johnston on behalf of a constituent forced to wait three months for surgery. 'This appeared to be reinforced by peer pressure: general practices aimed to be at or below median CCG referral rates in referral league table.' [...] The emphasis has moved from benefits and quality of care more towards is it within our financial means.'
Another added: 'Nobody cares if you're not referring enough. Not referring gives a safe shield for the practice.' & http://practicebusiness.co.uk/some-suspected-cancer-patients-refused-urgent-referrals-due-to-cost-pressures/

Vlogger guidelines published by advertising committee - BBC News
New guidelines for video bloggers who enter marketing relationships with brands have been published. The rules encourage "vloggers" to label advertising content and explain when they have been asked to feature products sent to them by companies. The Committee of Advertising Practice (Cap) has issued its first guidance since a landmark Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) ruling last year. The ASA said several vlogs praising Oreo biscuits were not clearly marked.

Reddit Is Big, Growing, and (Maybe) Turning Ever-More Inward - Robinson Meyer - The Atlantic
via http://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/1v4vik/reddit_is_big_growing_and_maybe_turning_evermore/ [...] This is an interesting article I found, and implies that reddit may be, rather than a "sharing site," more of "a kind of earnest Internet town hall." I personally like the idea, really. Whereas facebook is mindless "look at this!" reddit, for all of its flaws and circlejerks, does occasionally have really good discussion and debate that facebook and social media sites just, well, lack. I just thought that was interesting, I've never posted here before so hopefully this is enough elaboration and you find the article interesting. [....] Shareaholic’s statistics indicate a changing role for Reddit: The site is perhaps becoming more of an object of sustained attention, and less of a interesting-link clearinghouse. (Reddit darlings like image-sharing site Imgur, meanwhile, now boast their own communities—Imgur’s is now larger than Reddit.)
