Portsmouth hospital missed lung cancer cases - BBC News
A hospital failed to spot cases of lung cancer because it did not check patients' chest X-rays properly, the Care Quality Commission has found.
The health watchdog found that three patients at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth suffered "significant harm".
It emerged that junior doctors complained they had been asked to carry out specialist radiology work without the appropriate training.
The CQC has now launched a review of NHS radiology services in England.
All NHS bodies have been instructed to provide details about their backlogs, turnaround times, staffing and arrangements for routine reporting of images.

NHS Bosses Simon Stevens and Health Improvement have asked for 4bn more each year to meet targets again // Traditionally the health budget has got an extra 4% a year above inflation to help it cope with the ageing population and cost of new drugs and treatments.
Since 2010 that figure has dropped to close to 1% - and this extra money does little to improve that.

GP practices receive less than 7% of NHS spending - Evening Express
Overall NHS operating costs rose by 4.1% in cash terms to almost £11.7 billion in 2016-17 – with £800 million, or 6.8% of the budget, going towards the running of Scotland’s 963 GP practices.

The Scottish government has pledged to increase funding for GP services to reach 11% of the NHS budget by 2021 amid concerns over the future of the service.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (Scotland) has predicted the country could face shortfall of more than 850 GPs by 2021.

Psychiatrist vacancies 'double in four years' in England - BBC News

Prof Burn said the rise in vacancies was down to the difficulty in recruiting psychiatrists.
At the same time, more posts were being created for consultant psychiatrists as mental illness moved up the health agenda, but there were no specialists to fill them, she said.
She said medical schools need to broaden their pool of applicants in order to get more psychiatrists into the workplace.
"We are keen that medical schools should take in people studying psychology A-level - because they will be more likely to end up as psychiatrists."
It takes 13 years to train as a consultant psychiatrist.

NHS failing to tackle 'significant safety risks', warns its medical chief
Patients were being left at risk of suffering needless harm – including amputations, devastating maternity complications and deaths – because of the lack of action to protect them, the former heart surgeon said.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Sir Bruce said there were too many organisations vying for attention and instead, one simple system was needed to issue safety directives.

He also said too many hospitals were putting cost-cutting ahead of patient safety.

Similar recruitment and retention problems have arisen with GPs, but here, interestingly, the government is intending to pull the international recruitment lever with a vengeance. Time will tell how successful this will be in the current environment: the plan is to attract at least some of these from other EU countries and as the nursing numbers show us, the UK is no longer quite so attractive a destination for clinical staff for obvious reasons.

At a deeper level, Brexit has again exposed the fragility of NHS workforce planning. This may be most immediate for nursing but the need for an integrated short and long-term plan for the NHS workforce long precedes Brexit. After all, there will be little point in giving the NHS its (disputed) extra £350 million a week if there are no staff to spend it on.

NHS takes control of record number of GP practices | Holyrood Magazine
Health boards in Scotland have taken control of a record number of local doctors' practices in recent years, figures from the Royal College of GPs (RCGP) have revealed.

Facing a recruitment crisis as family doctors take early retirement and remote locations struggle to attract new GPs, practices are being handed back to health boards as they struggle to meet their commitments.

This means the number of patients treated directly by the NHS in so-called “2c” practices has doubled since 2007 to around 160,000. [...] Dr Miles Mack, Chair of RCGP Scotland, said: “In particular, it means that GPs are no longer in a leadership role and there is less continuity of care for patients.

Mack said public funding on GP services as a proportion of NHS spending has declined.

“Sufficient action must be taken to fill the projected shortfall of 856 GPs across Scotland by 2021,” he said.

“To fund that appropriately we need 11 per cent of NHS Scotland’s budget to go to general practice services.”

Last year, a study found there had been a 61% rise in advertising spend since 2010 in secondary schools alone, costing £56m in 2015. Shortages in the health service mean NHS Trusts are paying millions every month to agency and bank nurses to ensure there are adequate levels of staff on wards.

Stress-related leave has also increased in the public sector as workers are understandably getting run down working in understaffed schools and hospital wards. This is just staff – what about the costs to our children of being in classes too big for them to maximise their learning or to a sick individual who has an operation delayed?

Fall in planned operations in Scottish hospitals - BBC News
7% drop in planned ops (non-urgent). The health board has blamed problems recruiting staff. Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

Illness and disability are not matters of employment, but of health. We have created a society where we can only see disabled people as non-functioning economic units, at the expense of their wellbeing. We cannot rename benefits to hide ill and disabled people.
