Child protection services near crisis as demand rises - BBC News
The Child Welfare Inequalities project concluded deprivation was the largest single factor in families becoming involved in child protection.

In the most deprived areas about one child in every 60 was in care, compared with one in every 660 in the wealthiest areas.

With poorer areas spending more money on those in care, the team also concluded these authorities had seen more cuts to preventative services.

Car finance deals soar to new record - BBC News
The Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have raised concerns about such deals.
The Bank's worry is in relation to levels of consumer borrowing.
However Adrian Dally, head of motor finance at the FLA, said lenders were behaving responsibly.
"We do not share their concerns," he told the BBC. "Lending is responsible. This is a sustainable model going forwards." [...] That is largely because motorists can hand their cars back if they can no longer afford payments.
Ultimately it is the car manufacturers who carry the risk on such deals, as they guarantee second-hand values.

Climate change: Advisers warn of climate change domino effect
In a 2,000-page report, the Climate Change Committee says flooding will destroy bridges - wrecking electricity, gas and IT connections carried on them.
The committee also warns that poor farming means the most fertile soils will be badly degraded by mid-century.
And it says heat-related deaths among the elderly will triple by the 2050s as summer temperatures spiral.
The projections are based on the supposition that governments keep promises made at the Paris climate conference to cut emissions - a pledge that is in doubt.
The committee says if emissions are allowed to spiral, London summer temperatures could hit 48C (118F) in an extreme scenario, although the advisers say they don't expect that to happen.
The report from 80 authors is the most comprehensive yet on the potential impact of climate change on the UK.

Council tried to cover up failings after Poppi Worthington's death | UK news | The Guardian
A local authority criticised for failing to protect Poppi Worthington’s siblings for almost a year after her death did not discipline social workers and instead applied for a draconian order in an attempt to cover-up the failings, documents show. Thirteen-month-old Poppi died after she was found with serious injuries at her home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, three years ago. A high court family judge concluded that Poppi’s father, Paul Worthington, sexually assaulted her shortly before her death and she died as a result of the injuries she suffered during the assault. It has been revealed that her siblings were not taken into care until after their parents were arrested in August 2013.

Johnson & Johnson hit with $72m damages in talc cancer case - BBC News
Is talc safe? There have been concerns for years that using talcum powder, particularly on the genitals, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer. But the evidence is not conclusive. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies talc used on the genitals as "possibly carcinogenic" because of the mixed evidence. [...] Also there does not seem to be a "dose-response" for talc, unlike with known carcinogens like tobacco where the more you smoke, the greater the risk of lung cancer. [...] The charity Ovacome says there is no definitive evidence and that the worst-case scenario is that using talc increases the risk of cancer by a third. But it adds: "Ovarian cancer is a rare disease, and increasing a small risk by a third still gives a small risk. So even if talc does increase the risk slightly, very few women who use talc will ever get ovarian cancer."

NHS mental health funding falls in England - FoI figures - BBC News
[ minority of patients. Can't do that with cancer treatment! This compares to a rise of 2.6% in hospital trusts' operating budgets, according to analysis by the Health Foundation think-tank. The Department of Health said mental health care funding overall was rising. In the year to April 2016 the budget for mental health trusts was projected to rise just 0.3%. iPhones 'disabled' if Apple detects third-party repairs - BBC News
"I did get the front screen replaced, and I understand that it's now considered "tampered with", but at least let me use my iPhone on the old IOS system... I can't retrieve old photos or important documents I once had." Apple told the paper that iPhone software checks whether any repairs were authorised by Apple. A spokeswoman said: "When an iPhone is serviced by an unauthorised repair provider, faulty screens or other invalid components that affect the touch ID sensor could cause the check to fail if the pairing cannot be validated. "With a subsequent update or restore, additional security checks result in an 'error 53' being displayed." Apple has advised users facing the problem to contact Apple support.

'BPA-free' plastic accelerates embryonic development, disrupts reproductive system in zebrafish : science
Yeah. You know why? Because we replaced BPA with another plasticizing compound that does the exact same thing. BPS, the BPA replacement chemical, is structurally very similar to BPA and, therefore, we shouldn't be shocked when it exerts a similar impact on the reproductive system. Because we need the plasticizers to serve a particular function in the production of plastics, they are relegated to a fairly particular type of chemical structure. This means there all pretty likely to look the same and act the same. That is, as weak estrogens.

BBC Documentary - The Money Trap - How Banks Control the World Through Debt - YouTube
most profitable credit card debt customers are those making just the minimum payment. ... a credit card being a statement of status! retaining customers by upgrading them regularly w higher limits, new colors, new perks (they will never use). // unsecured lending - DEFINITION of 'Unsecured Loan' A loan that is issued and supported only by the borrower's creditworthiness, rather than by a type of collateral. An unsecured loan is one that is obtained without the use of property as collateral for the loan. // revolving debt // the higher your credit limit, the more you are likely to spend. // half of his income to just serve credit card fees and interest charges (no payments towards paying down) debt ... // banks lend irresponsibly bc they know they can get away with it, or somebody else will do it! because there is not regulation. no bank oversight. //&! Energy firms overcharging customers, says Ofgem - BBC News
Energy companies are "overcharging in many cases" with prices failing to fall in line with dropping wholesale costs, the industry's regulator has said. [...] Dermot Nolan, chief executive of Ofgem, told the BBC that domestic gas and electricity prices should be cheaper "for the vast majority of people". Wholesale energy costs make up nearly half of a domestic bill, and have fallen by about a third in the last 12 to 18 months, he said. Yet, prices had not fallen, he added.

Ofcom to BT: Status quo is not an option - BBC News
Far more serious for our broadband future is Ofcom's decision on whether BT's Openreach division should be split off from the rest of the company. Rival suppliers and some consumer groups argue that is the only way of getting the UK's broadband strategy back on track, while BT insists it would harm, not help, its investment programme. [...] She promises that Ofcom will press BT and its rivals on behalf of consumers on issues such as broadband advertising and the ability to switch providers. [...] The most startling figure in its Connected Nations report is that half of all small firms in areas like business parks cannot even get speeds of 10Mbps, the bare minimum recently promised to everyone by the government by 2020.

Mobbing-Klage gegen Nestlé: Unappetitliche Einblicke - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[...] Doppelgesichtigkeit eines Konzerns [...] In einem Schulungsvideo sprach er vom WHO-Quakquak. // EVIDENCE THAT THOSE WHO DEAL YOU POISON WONT CHANGE THEIR BUSINESS!

[...] //&! bbc.in/1X133Ih

[ German livestock industry is using last stand-antibitoics, without oversight, regulation, accountability, transparency ] Geflügel: Antibiotika wirken immer häufiger nicht, weil Bakterien dagegen resistent werden.

Marijuana legalization initiative fails in Ohio - Business Insider
Issue 3 would create a marijuana "monopoly" (actually, an oligopoly) consisting of 10 producers who would have their exclusive rights to engage in the commercial production of marijuana enshrined in the state constitution. The campaign in support of Issue 3 — so-called Responsible Ohio — is predictably supported by those who would hold these exclusive rights. This is crony capitalism at its worst. // same w GMO, Monsanto asked whitehouse (bush) to introduce stringent legislation and regulation about GMO research bc monanto knew it was ahead and didn't want any newcomers in, thus made through legislation, regulation and compliance cost, the barriers to entry artificially high, through its effective strong lobbying to introduce legislation & regulation to its liking.
