PMQs: David Cameron urged to 'think again' on ESA cuts - BBC News
[ we should help them get back to work ... 'by cutting their existence and add to worry, subsistence living and food and fuel poverty' ] Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn urged David Cameron to "think again" about cuts to employment and support allowance, warning that it will badly impact cancer patients and people with "severe" disabilities. Raising the topic at PMQs, Mr Corbyn said the government should not try to reverse its defeat in the House of Lords over the plans to cut the benefit by £30 a week. The PM said existing ESA claimants unable to work would not lose any money. "But in future, those who are able to get back to work, we should help them get back to work. That is what a compassionate country does," he added, and went on to attack Labour's health and economic policies in Wales and Scotland.

Revealed: the Tories new plan to squeeze the working poor (From Herald Scotland)
[ great picture of IDS. redistribution from bottom to the top. ] THE TORY government been attacked over plans to extend controversial benefit sanctions to claimants with jobs, with critics warning introducing the "shockingly harsh" penalties risks plunging workers into poverty. A number of pilot schemes are currently being carried out in the UK – including in Inverness – to assess a new scheme which the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) says is aimed at helping workers on low earnings take on more hours and increase their income. Benefits can be stopped if claimants fail to meet requirements outlined by the DWP – such as missing Jobcentre appointments or failing to show evidence of looking for more work for a certain number of hours a week, on top of their usual job.

Aberdeen and Edinburgh highlighted in city economies report - BBC News
No Scottish cities were in the top 10 for "low-wage, high-welfare" economies. The 2016 report - described as a "health check" for the 63 largest UK cities - focused on Chancellor George Osborne's vow to build a "higher wage, lower welfare" economy, as set out in the Summer Budget 2015. >> It argued that nearly a million new jobs had been created in cities since 2010 - but that the average salary had also dropped by £1,300 per resident. 'High-wage, low-welfare' << [...] The think tank said the two areas' ability to attract high-skilled jobs - in the oil and professional services industries for example - was the key to their success. It argued that cities with high wages had seen faster jobs growth, with employment rising by 10% since 2010, compared with 3% in low-wage cities. [...] [ Housing Crisis across the country thus ] increased housing benefit payments.

[ ie could tax big pensions! progressive tax on income vs flat income tax/NI and sugar tax, food chain tax, animal products tax, processed food tax, engineered food tax ] In an interview with the Guardian, Stevens suggested ministers should be prepared to risk upsetting Britain’s growing army of senior citizens by looking at whether the benefits they receive are fair to working-age and younger people. Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. We must do everything possible to reclaim our democracy.

So Wrong for So Long | Foreign Policy
[T]heir earlier support for the Iraq War and their opposition to the Iran deal stem from the basic neoconservative worldview that informs their entire approach to foreign policy. [...] To be more specific, the problem isn’t that these people just happened to be embarrassingly wrong about Iraq. After all, plenty of other people were equally misguided back then, including many people who now support the deal today. Nor is the problem the neocons’ stubborn and morally dubious refusal to admit they were wrong and take responsibility for the lives and money they squandered. No, the real problem is that the neoconservative worldview — one that still informs the thinking of many of the groups and individuals who are most vocal in opposing the Iran deal — is fundamentally flawed. [...] they think weaker states are easy to bully and never stand up to powerful adversaries. ...

Joseph Stiglitz: It’s Time to Get Radical on Inequality - YouTube
Nobel laureate Stiglitz, author of The Price of Inequality and The Great Divide, studies the forces driving inequality and what is at stake if it continues. In his view, bad economic thinking deserves part of the blame — fanciful ideas like trickle-down and the notion that economists should try to increase the size of the economic pie and let the politicians worry about distribution. On the contrary, Stiglitz sees distribution as a problem economists must confront. He warns that an economic system that doesn’t raise standards of living for most Americans is a failure. [...] monopoly rent = too big to fail/tbtf (bailout) == cost to society/economic damage == where was antitrust!? monopolies are less productive & costly eventually in the long-term. rent exploitation through lobby! The Civil Rights Movement Is Going in Reverse in Alabama | New Republic
But in other, less obvious ways, black people in Alabama and across the South are as politically vulnerable as they’ve been since the emergence of the civil rights movement. “It’s a total disempowering of African Americans,” Sanders said. “We are going back to the past very fast.” [...] From that perch, he struck a deal in 2006 with Republican Governor Bob Riley that raised the threshold at which an Alabama family of four starts paying state income tax, from $4,600 annually to $12,500. Knight would have preferred to raise the threshold to the poverty line, but he felt that he had to focus on what was politically feasible. It was an approach indicative of Knight’s overall legislative philosophy. “ [...] Sanders and Knight were criticized by some black politicians, as well as by liberal white ones, for being too timid, too incremental. But the two argued that they were playing a long game and that, eventually, they’d achieve their larger goals.

The Rise Of Europe's Religious Right
For the most part, though, issues dear to social conservatives were a side issue in elections driven heavily by economic frustration. [...] The suddenness with which social conservatives became a force in Brussels has many progressives speculating that they are the creations of American social conservatives seeking to “export the culture wars.” [...] Today, American ties seem much more about a shared vision to build a global conservative movement rather than leaning on stronger and wealthier U.S. partners for support. // http://www.salon.com/2014/02/28/the_dying_right_why_christian_fundamentalists_are_in_panic_mode_partner/ || Pro Progressive - the hard things are hard bc they are worth doing it. Op-Ed Columnist - The Technocracy Boom - NYTimes.com
a progressive era, based on the faith in government experts and their ability to use social science analysis to manage complex systems.

This progressive era is being promulgated without much popular support. It’s being led by a large class of educated professionals, who have been trained to do technocratic analysis, who believe that more analysis and rule-writing is the solution to social breakdowns, and who have constructed ever-expanding networks of offices, schools and contracts.

Already this effort is generating a fierce, almost culture-war-style backlash. It is generating a backlash among people who do not have faith in Washington, who do not have faith that trained experts have superior abilities to organize society, who do not believe national rules can successfully contend with the intricacies of local contexts and cultures.
