FA racism allegations inquiry: Request 'bordering on blackmail' - Eniola Aluko - BBC Sport
Footballer Eni Aluko tells the parliamentary inquiry over racism that FA chief executive Martin Glenn asked her to make a written statement that "the FA was not institutionally racist" and in return "the FA would consider" releasing the second portion of an agreed financial settlement.

Aluko says the offer was "bordering on blackmail". Glenn denies asking her to make the statement. &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p05k9vd1

UK nuclear plans could be hit by Westinghouse financial crisis | Business | The Guardian
[ putting all eggs in one basket! ] A financial crisis at a major nuclear energy business is threatening to deal a blow to the UK’s atomic energy programme.

Toshiba’s US nuclear subsidiary Westinghouse Electric is believed to be on the brink of filing in the US for bankruptcy protection from creditors. A UK expert said the collapse would leave a considerable hole in Britain’s new nuclear ambitions as Toshiba is a key player behind plans for a new power station at Moorside in Cumbria.

UN asks UK to suspend work on Hinkley Point | UK news | The Guardian
The UNECE has now gone a step further and said the UK should consider refraining from further works on the site of the new reactors.

The body said the government should wait until it has heard back from countries including Germany, Norway and the Netherlands on whether it would be helpful for them to be formally notified under a treaty on transboundary environmental impacts.

The UN request is an embarrassment for the government, which has faced several delays over the UK’s first atomic power station for a generation. But it is unlikely to derail the earthworks and building of a jetty at Hinkley, which is Europe’s biggest construction site.

Microsoft raises prices of some PCs by up to £400 due to Brexit | Technology | The Guardian
Microsoft has increased the price of its Surface and Surface Book computers in the UK by more than 15%, or £400 for some models, due to sterling’s drop in the value post-EU referendum.

The price increase comes in the wake of similar moves by Sonos and twice by Apple, which saw the cost of computers, speakers and apps rise by as much as 25% adjusting for the falling value of sterling against the dollar, in which Microsoft and other US technology firms do their accounting.

Could this be George Osborne's last Budget?
In any case, the Out campaign has begun to look as much like an internal Tory party putsch as a principled fight for sovereignty and a better economic future. Those who always mistrusted Cameron and Osborne, regarding them as closet Blairites rather than the true heirs to Thatcher, sense their time has come. By the summer, the Tory high command could look completely different. [...] [Budget2016] more of an exercise in pre-election showmanship than the traditional post-election downer of renewed fiscal discipline and supposedly desirable economic reform. [still] For Osborne, the goal of a balanced budget by the end of the parliament must remain sacrosanct. EDF finance chief quits ahead of Hinkley Point decision - BBC News
[ 18bn, world most expensive, and internal board power & power politics, get him off, and you are able to go ahead // guaranteed strike price ] Thomas Piquemal stepped down because he feared the project could jeopardise EDF's financial position, according to reports. EDF shares opened 8.2% lower on Monday. Last month, Chris Bakken, the director of the project that could produce 7% of UK electricity by 2025, said he was leaving to pursue other opportunities. Jean-Bernard Levy, chairman and chief executive of EDF, said Mr Piquemal told him of the decision to leave last week and that he regretted the "haste" of Mr Piquemal's departure. The company's board is expected to finalise in April how it will fund the project after postponing the decision a number of times. Mr Levy said the board was studying the investment in Hinkley Point to ascertain the best way to finance the power plant. He added that EDF aimed to announce a final investment decision "soon".

Twenty Faslane workers exposed to radiation - BBC News
Twenty workers at the Faslane nuclear submarine base were exposed to radiation due to safety errors, newly-released documents have revealed. The engineers were repairing a leaking tank on a Trident submarine while a nearby nuclear reactor was operated. Details of the incident, in August 2012, at the Clyde site emerged after Freedom of Information (FOI) requests by an anti-nuclear group. The Ministry of Defence said no-one was harmed and safety had been improved. [...] The MoD report has been heavily redacted and does not reveal the level of radiation each worker was exposed to.

bit.ly/1TOwjhT &! A group representing 60 local authorities has warned that recent closures of large power stations have left Britain heading for power cuts next winter, despite assurances to the contrary from the government. [...] National Grid needed to act immediately to fill the supply gap by sending out new contracts for at least 2,500 megawatts (MW) of additional generating capacity – enough to power 2.5m homes. The alliance wants ministers to reconsider the level of carbon taxes, saying this is one of the key reasons why so many coal-fired power stations are being shut down early. George Osborne warns of further spending cuts in Budget - BBC News

Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The lights are going out for solar energy
Back in December, when most people were focussed on Christmas and not renewable subsidies, the government quietly published their decision to cut Feed-in Tariffs for industries such as solar, wind and hydropower by a staggering 65 per cent. Included in the small print was analysis which showed a possible 19,000 job losses, mostly in solar, which would see that industry shrink to under half its size. [...] Instead the government is thinking short-term, and our economy will suffer. For a party that wants people to think of it as economically competent, this is an incredibly bad move.

Hitachi boss issues warning over Wylfa subsidy deal - BBC News
[ giving extortionate (for consumer) strike prices, while cutting renewable feed in tariff 95% and 500m subsidies for Oil/Aberdeen ] The head of the company behind a new £8bn nuclear power station on Anglesey has warned it may walk away from the project if a subsidy deal with the UK government cannot be reached. Hitachi chairman Hiroaki Nakanishi told the Telegraph he voiced concerns about Wylfa Newydd's expected cost to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. It followed problems a rival faced for the Hinkley Point plant in Somerset. The UK government said it wants low-cost nuclear power. Hitachi owns Horizon Nuclear Power which is behind the plans to build the new power plant, which could be operational by the early 2020s. Horizon is in talks with the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) on issues such as the strike price, which will be key to attracting additional finance.

Hawking: Humans at risk of lethal 'own goal' - BBC News
Humanity is at risk from a series of dangers of our own making, according to Prof Stephen Hawking. Nuclear war, global warming and genetically-engineered viruses are among the scenarios which he singles out. And he says that further progress in science and technology will create "new ways things can go wrong". Prof Hawking is giving this year's BBC Reith Lectures, which explore research into black holes, and his warning came in answer to audience questions. He says that assuming humanity eventually establishes colonies on other worlds, it will be able to survive. "Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next thousand or ten thousand years. [...] But he also said that future generations of researchers should be aware of how scientific and technological progress is changing the world, and to help the wider public understand it. //&! bit.ly/1RwS7yA

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. German plasma success raises nuclear fusion hopes - BBC News
A German nuclear fusion experiment has produced a special super-hot gas which scientists hope will eventually lead to clean, cheap energy. [...] Physicists are in a worldwide race to create stable fusion devices that could not only mimic the Sun but release abundant energy, without the volumes of toxic waste generated by nuclear fission - the splitting of the atom. [...] The project began nine years ago and has cost 1bn euros (£720m; $1.1bn) so far. The EU's main nuclear fusion project is called Iter, at Cadarache, in the south of France. But it will not be fired up until the 2020s. It is controversial, having already cost more than €10bn. [...] Scientists have been working on nuclear fusion for more than 50 years but the extreme temperatures involved and the difficulty of controlling plasmas mean progress is slow.

What is the outlook for Britain's steel industry? - BBC News
UK steelmakers want lower business rates, a relaxation of emissions targets for heavy manufacturers, more compensation for high energy prices and a commitment that British steel is used in major construction projects. "We've set out some of the things government can press ahead with now to send out a clear signal of support in the very short term," said Gareth Stace, director of UK Steel. [...] How does the government act without going against its free market principles and breaking EU rules? The rush for solar power: buy now, before it's too late | Environment | The Guardian
As the second phase of the Guardian’s Keep It in the Ground campaign has highlighted, solar power has gone through a remarkable period of growth since the demoralising Copenhagen climate summit in 2009: in the intervening six years, the cost of panels has fallen by 70%, with the government’s target of 750,000 domestic solar installations by 2020 reached this year. Following her promotion in May, energy secretary Amber Rudd promised to “unleash a new solar revolution”, singling out commercial rooftop developments, still a relative rarity in the UK, and perhaps thinking too of her Hastings constituents with their sun-kissed, southern roofs. But just three months later, she was announcing drastic cuts. In the next few weeks, Rudd, who used to work under chancellor George Osborne in the Treasury, will decide whether or not to reduce by almost 90% the feed-in tariff that subsidises small-scale solar installations, such as household roofs, from 1 January 2016. A consultation closes next week

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.
