Superbugs are on track to kill 10 million people by 2050 if things don’t change—fast
[under reported ] Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported an estimated 450,000 new cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. The emergence of multiple drug-resistant pneumonia and E. coli bacteria strains are predicted to contribute significantly to increased mortalities due to their ability to spread rapidly through populations.

Mary Bassett: Why your doctor should care about social justice
[ DETERMINANT NOT JUST FOR HEALTH, BUT ALSO POOR HEALTH ] the structural inequities embedded in the world's political and economic organizations, inequities that make marginalized people more vulnerable. These same structural problems exist in the United States today, and as New York City's Health Commissioner, Bassett is using every chance she has to rally support for health equity and speak out against racism. The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Magistrate sacked for opposing same-sex adoption is suspended by NHS
Richard Page suspended as non-executive director by Kent and Medway trust after being struck off from bench [...] Richard Page, who sat on the family bench in Kent, was struck off after telling the BBC in March 2015: “My responsibility as a magistrate, as I saw it, was to do what I considered best for the child, and my feeling was therefore that it would be better if it was a man and woman who were the adopted parents.”

Andrew Ling, chairman of the Kent and Medway NHS and social care partnership trust (KMPT), has written to the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) requesting the suspension of the 69-year-old.

Page, who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years, said about his suspension: “Last week, the prime minister distributed an Easter video in which he commended Christians and the church for their vital role in society, stating that we are a Christian country and should be proud of it.

Why Hillary Clinton’s ‘super-predator’ concession is such a big moment for political protest - The Washington Post
Clinton’s 1996 speech included some language about these so-called super-predators implying that they were a generation of guilt- and compassion-free sociopaths who, in the interest of society, simply had to be contained. [...] Clinton seemed audibly and visibly irritated, saying she would answer if allowed to speak and then, even more notably, “that no one had ever asked her that before.” Then, Clinton essentially moved on with her regularly scheduled fundraising program. There was no accounting, partial or full, for her 1996 position nor how she arrived at her 2016 stance on criminal justice reform. Moving on. [...] Clinton decided to offer an apology for using that “super-predator” and “brought to heel” language. In the 1990s both were part of a relatively popular but now largely discredited theory about rising youth crime. [ tough on crime was] effective tactic with white voters, because in the [US] there are a whole host of persistent stereotypes abt race & criminality.

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

Organ donation bill 'unhelpful and potentially damaging' - BBC News
[ other countries who have an opt-out system implemented have seen their transplant rates rise ] A bill currently going through the assembly proposes that everyone will be on the organ donation register unless they opt out. But some of Northern Ireland's most senior clinicians have been warning Stormont's health committee that the bill is unhelpful and potentially damaging. Dr Paul Glover, the regional clinical lead on organ donation, said he believes the bill "in isolation" will fail. "It will have to be underpinned by education," he said. "We have to have society talking about organ donations, talking to family, making their wishes known. "This is about changing society - it's not about saying this is the law, therefore this is what we must do. Storm Frank: What have we done to make the flooding worse? - BBC News
[Strom Eva, Desmond, Frank, ... building code has to be reviewed. new buildings have to be raised, first floor ~1m above ground. no basement. also, roofs have to resist gale winds easily ] Policy-makers are often keen to see brownfield land used for residential development, but these areas are often most vulnerable to flooding. Demand from buyers has fuelled this growth, too. You might assume that there would be huge drops in property prices after highly publicised floods. But in places like Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, and Cockermouth, Cumbria, which experienced heavy flooding in 2007 and 2009 respectively, prices have remained largely unaffected in the long run. [...] "We've tended to straighten rivers, to canalise them, to embank them and all that rushes the water down to the nearby urban pinch point," explains environmentalist and writer George Monbiot, adding that the flow of water should be slowed down and the rivers lengthened instead.

Most of extra £3.8bn NHS funds already spent, says expert | Society | The Guardian
Much of the extra £3.8bn allocated to the NHS in George Osborne’s autumn statement has effectively already been spent, a leading health expert had said. John Appleby, chief economist at the King’s Fund, backed Labour claims that NHS trust deficits and extra pension costs mean very little of the extra money promised for 2016-17 will be available for better care. He said the NHS was in a weaker position now than five years ago and faced a real challenge over the rest of this parliament. Labour released figures that it said showed Osborne’s health spending boost was “more spin than substance” because £2.2bn would be swallowed up covering trust deficits and another £1.1bn would have to fund extra pension costs. Patients less satisfied by GPs who refuse antibiotics - BBC News
[ quick fix society. rather pop a pill than not eat bacon for breakfast. show how much GP's have to change set-up and be incentivised 2 help people change. ] The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, compared the prescribing rates of more than 95% of all GP surgeries in England to a survey of patient satisfaction. Those satisfaction scores are used to determine how much GPs get paid. Patients' satisfaction rose when they were listened to or carefully examined. A study last year warned that up to half of all prescriptions of antibiotics could be inappropriate - given to patients suffering coughs, colds, sore throats and the flu - none of which can be treated with antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance, when bacteria and infections can no longer be killed off or treated with strong drugs. In this study, doctors who prescribed 25% fewer antibiotics saw a modest reduction in patient satisfaction with them or with their surgery.

James Dawson criticises parents who attacked his LGBT guide for children | Books | The Guardian
“In 2015, when you read of people comparing gay people to paedophiles you just despair,” “I always think, as a community, we’ve come so far and achieved so much, but then you read something like that and realise there is still such small-mindedness and hatred left to contend with.” Dawson, who recently came out as transgender, pointed to the young LGBT people of Alaska “and the message they’re receiving from this furore: they must be so terrified to come out if this is the reaction they think they’ll get”. [...] Libraries have always been the natural sanctuary of marginalised young people and long may they remain open

Rules banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood to be reviewed | Politics | The Guardian
A spokesperson for the gay rights campaign group Stonewall said: “We want a donation system that is fair and based on up-to-date medical evidence. Currently gay and bi people cannot give blood if they have had sex in the past 12 months, regardless of whether they used protection. Yet straight people who may have had unprotected sex can donate. “These current rules are clearly unfair and we want to see people asked similar questions, irrespective of their sexual orientation, to accurately assess the risk of infection. Screening all donors by sexual behaviour rather than by sexual orientation would increase blood stocks in times of shortage and create a safer supply by giving a more accurate, non-discriminatory assessment.”

Charlie Sheen discloses HIV positive diagnosis: 'It's a hard three letters to absorb' | Culture | The Guardian
Today Show host Matt Lauer asked Sheen why he continued to bring people including prostitutes to his home even though they were threatening him. Sheen said it was because he was depressed. He said that the period in March 2011 when he appeared on television and online making absurd claims and going on long tirades was not tied to his HIV status. “I wish I could blame it on that – that was more roid rage,” he said. [...] CBS fired Sheen from the long-running sitcom Two and a Half Men in March 2011 after the Golden Globe-winning actor had a public meltdown and criticised the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. Filming had been disrupted in the previous year as Sheen, who was the highest-paid actor on television at the time, received treatment for drug addiction. //&! Celebrating the hidden history of disabled people’s fight for civil rights | Frances Ryan | Society | The Guardian
Burgess says the exhibition aims to tell the story of a campaign movement that’s been largely ignored up to now. “If it is covered, it’s often not about people demanding change, it’s about ‘welfare’ or rights being ‘given out’,” he says. The exhibition also celebrates the Disability Discrimination Act, which this week marks its 20th anniversary, and the activists who made the law a reality. With the passing of the landmark DDA, for the first time in Britain the law provided disabled citizens with access to the workplace (employers were required to make “reasonable adjustments” to work and premises) and, through later amendments, to education and transport.

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

I don't think [the case for the Union] has been well enough articulated - it is still a case of 'them at Westminster' Sir Kenneth Calman, former head of the Scottish Commission on Devolution [...] Crossbench peer, Lord Judge, asked if there was merit in creating a Charter of the Union. Sir Kenneth replied: "The answer is yes. I think it would make the discussion easier about who does what, and how we benefit, how you benefit and how we all benefit. I think that would be very helpful. Should we treat mental illness the same as physical illness?
I have grown uneasy with the pressure to validate mental illness by analogy with the physical. In a truly compassionate society this would not be necessary. We risk turning suffering into an identity, a foregone conclusion, a test of whether one really, really deserves to get help. We risk asking those suffering to conform to a fantasy version of their disorder, in which happiness is weakness and recovery a sham. I understand why we do it, but we risk making mentally ill people feel they have something to prove. They don’t.

WHO | A call for higher taxes on tobacco
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. The evidence is clear: raising tobacco taxes cuts usage, encourages smokers to quit and discourages young people from picking up the habit in the first place. The United Nations ought to encourage countries to raise tobacco taxes to support the world’s Sustainable Development Goals and reduce tobacco use.

The health implications of the diesel scandal - BBC News
[ http://www.spiegel.de/thema/abgasaffaere_bei_volkswagen/ ] The diesel scandal started as a worry for car owners. Yet, according to Prof Alistair Lewis, an air pollution expert at the University of York, "it is overwhelmingly a health story". The costs of not doing more to tackle air pollution can be measured in "thousands of deaths and billions of pounds, all passed on to the taxpayer", he says. "The real costs here are the ones the taxpayer picks up in terms of providing extra healthcare," he explains. "The only reason we measure NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and particulates is because they are harmful to health." //&! youtu.be/HG8Kpfs4ZYs - Krank dank VW?

VIDEO: ‘Days of Revolt’ With Chris Hedges: ISIS, the New Israel - Truthdig
https://youtu.be/Go5vYcrwlOM // Hedges begins by pointing out how the Sykes-Picot agreement of 1916, responsible for “carving up the Middle East and turning countries into protectorates,” has been changed only twice—once with the Israeli independence and now with Islamic State. As Hedges put it, the tactics used to redraw the map in the Middle East are both effective and familiar, including the “use of foreign money, use of foreign fighters, tactics of ethnic cleansing and terrorism and this mythical vision—in the case of Israel, the recreation of Judea and Sumeria from the Bible, and in the case of ISIS, the recreation of the seventh-century caliphate.” Alnasseri agrees, opening his response with the observation that “to understand the pheonomenon of ISIS, we need to contextualize it within the setbacks and counter-revolution against the Arab revolutions.“ [...] 'Iraq can not be re-united.'

Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

Healthier lifestyles 'could cut cancer cases by a third' - BBC News
For example, among men, 9% of cases of advanced prostate cancer could be prevented every year if men were not overweight or obese. [...] Prof Kevin Fenton, director of health and wellbeing at Public Health England, said the UK was currently behind on cancer survival rates compared with other European countries. He said one major factor was that cancer prevention was not in the public consciousness.
