93% Of All Jobs "Created" Since 2008 Were Added Through The Birth/Death Model | Zero Hedge
Here are the details of how over 90% of the jobs created in the past decade were nothing more than a "statistical" adjustment in some BLS model. [...] Furthermore, self-employed persons as a percentage of the working age population and the number of jobs created by establishments less than one year old are also declining. [...] the multi-decade slowdown in new business formation. Further supporting the Harvard study findings, a Brookings Institution paper called “Declining business dynamism in the United States: a look at states and metros” shows that business formations slowed down and business deaths accelerated after the crisis of 2008 (below to the right). (( THE LOW HANGING FRUITS OF INNOVATION HAVE BEEN PLUCKED! + ECON WINNER TAKES ALL = COMPETITION ON PRICE )) [...] The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) seems to be alone in its belief that the entrepreneurial environment in the US is improving. We believe that the BLS has been artificially inflating the monthly payroll numbers via the birth and death adjustment. This overstatement is not trivial in nature – the adjustment added 30% of all jobs reported since 2010.

[systemic in FoxNews building, under Rupert Murdoch] Fox News' most popular show is facing an exodus of advertisers because of sexual harassment claims against its host, Bill O'Reilly.
Mercedes-Benz, BMW North America and several others have pulled adverts following the "disturbing" allegations.
The New York Times reported on Saturday that settlements of $13m (£10.4m) were reached with five women who accused him of inappropriate behaviour.
The network said on Tuesday it was working to "address concerns".

Ray Kurzweil: The world isn't getting worse — our information is getting better - GeekWire
People think the world is getting worse. … That’s the perception. What’s actually happening is our information about what’s wrong in the world is getting better. A century ago, there would be a battle that wiped out the next village, you’d never even hear about it. Now there’s an incident halfway around the globe and we not only hear about it, we experience it.

Michael Gove delivered the biggest blow to Boris Johnson’s career yet | Matthew d’Ancona | Opinion | The Guardian
[ on purpose leaked? making it show like an accident cc auto-complete gone wrong ... to the right person at the end that it ends up in the papers! ] Yesterday’s leaked email from Gove’s wife, the journalist Sarah Vine, hinted that all was not well in Borisland. In the message, she reminded her husband that his presence on the ticket was intended to reassure press barons who did not warm to Johnson. In return, she said, Boris must give “SPECIFIC assurances” to Gove. One surmises that those assurances were not forthcoming – or that yesterday’s “crucial meetings”, referred to in the email, yielded additional problems.

Media Websites Battle Faltering Ad Revenue and Traffic
[lots more competition for people's attention] The trouble, the publishers say, is twofold. The web advertising business, always unpredictable, became more treacherous. And website traffic plateaued at many large sites, in some cases falling — a new and troubling experience after a decade of exuberant growth. Online publishers have faced numerous financial challenges in recent years, including automated advertising and ad-blocking tools. But now, there is a realization that something more profound has happened: The transition from an Internet of websites to an Internet of mobile apps and social platforms, and Facebook in particular, is no longer coming — it is here. Tory thinktank warns Elliott Johnson's parents against broader inquest | Politics | The Guardian
[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

[...] Meanwhile, a fatigue is setting in among customers. There are now more than 1.5 million apps in the App Store (Android users have 1.6 million to choose from), but by 2014, the majority of Americans were downloading zero apps per month. British people think their media is the most biased and right-wing in Europe - and they're probably right | Voices | The Independent
Just two individuals - Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere - controlled a staggering 52.2 per cent of online and print national news publications in the UK in 2013 [...] All of these newspapers either backed the Conservatives or Ukip in the most recent election and are all considered traditional right-wing publications. If you add up the readership of these right-wing newspapers, they account for a staggering 69 per cent of national newspaper readership in Britain in 2013. Left Foot Forward concluded their analysis by stating that “over three quarters (77.8 per cent) of the press is owned by a handful of billionaires.”

Civil servants will be banned from helping Brexit ministers, Cameron says - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
He put Brexit on the table because it was popular and feared to lose votes to UKIP. Opportunist. Career Politician. Needs a script. And now is changing the script in order not to lose the plot. The public voting yes. // David Cameron has made it clear that civil servants will not be allowed to help ministers who want to make the case for Britain leaving the European Union. He set this out in a letter listing four rules that will apply to ministers who want to campaign for Brexit. [...] [ and makes clear what his cabinet and peers can vote on ] Ministers will only be free to dissent on the issue of staying in the EU or leaving. [...] Ministers who speak from the frontbench will be expected to support government policy. But “we need to be flexible and apply common sense”, Cameron said. [...] This implies that Outist ministers will not be allowed to make the case for leaving the EU from the Despatch Box. [ Meaning his Brexit-Op is a dickless stunt. ]

Jon Snow: ‘I would defend the BBC to the death’ | Media | The Guardian
but that some media owners had a negative effect on the industry. “I think there has been a negative pull on the British media and I blame some of the proprietors for that. I still think the BBC is pretty good and I would defend it to the death, even though I have never worked for it.” [...] Asked about press coverage of Jeremy Corbyn, he said some of those writing about the Labour leader were “experiencing some kind of fear”, adding: “I think they may need to see a psychiatrist.” He said the biggest issues facing the UK were housing and inequality between the very rich and very poor, adding: “I don’t think there will be a revolution, but it has all the characteristics of what has led to revolution in the past.” [...] [ on Journalism / Covering human tragedy ] He said that while he tries to remain objective, “sometimes when powerful emotions are in play, this can be very, very hard”.

BBC independence 'eroded', says director general - BBC News
In a speech to business leaders on Monday, Tony Hall will urge changes to the way the broadcaster is regulated. He wants licence fee payers to have a greater say than politicians. Lord Hall says there has been a "major change" over the past 20 years which has made the foundations of the BBC's independence "weaker". The government has yet to comment. "When I was working in news and current affairs in the '90s, the independence of the BBC was protected by a set of quiet customs and traditions," he will say. "Back then it was Willie Whitelaw who'd provided us with the certainty of a 15-year Charter, underpinning our independence by allowing us stability through the political cycle. [...] He also suggests recent licence fee settlements have been decided behind closed doors without a "full process".

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

TOO many people with __“common” mental health problems__ are reliant on the state, [DWP] Iain Duncan Smith claimed yesterday. The Minister was speaking ahead of a major shake-up of the ESA benefit. He claimed the system was too “binary” and argued people with mental health problems would benefit from working. The SNP said his shake-up would force more people into hardship. In the speech, which was behind closed doors, IDS made no policy announcements, rather policy intentions. [...] [ putting it into the light of abuse of the 'system' >> ] Two absolutes equating to one perverse incentive[.] “This needs to change – things are rarely that simplistic. [ he already cut ESA warg ] &! youtu.be/BYAf5DuWaC0 "how much work can u do till u get treatment" - so much abt speech not being policy. never does he mention the stretched NHS&GP system especially mental health services. Google Creates New Company Called Alphabet, Restructures Stock - Bloomberg Business
[ Cracking under Wall Streets pressure ] The new structure [ holding company ] will give greater clarity into how Google invests in various ventures, including driverless cars, high-speed Internet service and health-related technologies. It also makes it easier to make any future acquisitions or potential divestments. [...] Sundar Pichai, Page’s deputy, will be promoted to become CEO of Google Inc., which generates the bulk of the company’s $60 billion in annual revenue. Omid Kordestani will transition from his role as chief business officer to become an adviser to Alphabet and Google. “Sergey and Larry will be able to allocate their time differently between the core and non-core businesses,” “You have Sundar focusing on the core business, and you will have Larry and Sergey kind of looking at the future growth businesses.” [...] [Larry Page] “Our company is operating well today, but we think we can make it cleaner and more accountable.” [ Google Inc. = Search worlds information. ]

Google’s $6 Billion Miscalculation on the EU - Bloomberg Business
via https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=10021018 // Google declined to make its executives available for on-the-record interviews, but several concede that the company was caught off guard by the intensity of European criticism, in large part because of its broad popularity with users. Google is so relied upon that many people casually assert that the most prevalent search term on rival Bing is, in fact, “Google.” (Microsoft declines to confirm this.) [...] The more Europeans rely on Google, however, the more they’ve come to fear it, making it an easy target for politicians. Last November members of the European Parliament voted 384 to 174 for a symbolic proposal to break up the search giant into two separate pieces—its monolithic search engine and everything else. [ + agressive tax evasion schemes came under public & political pressure; Amazon, Google, Apple, Facebook, and Co ]

Google and blogs: “Shit.” – Marco.org
Landscaped changed dramatically ~2009/10 forward for blogs/content creators. >> blogs have to be now niche, focused, regular content w engagement (due to algos/ranking), ... // "If you want traffic, Google’s arc makes clear to publishers, you’re going to have to pay for it." Include Facebook. Include Twitter (Promoted Tweets). Include Snapchat (Discover, Linkedin (Pulse). >> All gained sized, thus noise, people gaming the system, ... thus owner changes rules and system for his/her advantage and gain (profit maximization). // // even content curators (by hand) can be 1/2 noise. And the summaries are just shorter bouts of noise to scan through (medium.com, Mahalo) - its like joining the dark force. // Things come and go in waves/trends; thus the next wave/trend could be self-published long-form niche content partially free (The Information, ebooks, Pando) which are remarkable (Seth Godin) // snacking is SO western lifestyle, even for information/news - is lowering productivity/focus

The 'Blue Dress' And The Incredible Scalability Of Content -SVW
The traditional media industry is a people-based business and it usually requires additional people to produce additional media. It's not scalable in the same way as a software-based business, by adding more machines. However, there is a very important distinction about a media business that is usually missed:  Content is near infinitely scalable on the Internet. The Internet was built to scale content in seconds. Other people's servers will gladly carry your content to wherever the Internet ends -- for free! With one story you can potentially imprint the entire Internet! Try matching that performance with a servers and software business, for example, offering a web service.  Back in 2006 I cheekily dubbed this effect: Foremski's First Law of New Media -- Content is infinitely scalable.  I'll tell you the Second Law in a future post!

Facebook thinks you’re too dumb to realize its scientific papers are really just PR | PandoDaily
According to recent studies, almost half of all web-using adults — and 88 percent of Millennials — use Facebook to find news. [...] But this research paper is less a piece of objective scientific inquiry and more the work of corporate-commissioned data tricksters — a rancid pile of pro-Facebook propaganda that derives and frames its conclusions with the sole purpose of making Facebook look good. This isn’t science. It’s PR. [...] the fact that Facebook itself is the one absolving Facebook of damaging public discourse, demands greater scrutiny. And on closer examination, much of the data and assumptions that informed the researchers’ conclusions fail to qualify as sound scientific inquiry. [...] If politically polarized users want politically polarized content, Facebook won’t disappoint them. [...] [SV &its Cheerleader squads in form of bloggosphere] will give lousy corporate data research like a pass — is still exponentially more credible than a rewritten press release at Techcrunch.
