IFS: Growth in UK living standards worst in 60 years | Business | The Guardian
march 2017 by asterisk2a
The Institute for Financial Studies is predicting that households will be almost 20% worse off by 2021 - IFS calculations show that average household incomes will be 18% lower in 2021-22 than could have been reasonably expected before the financial crisis in 2007-08 - “One of the biggest drivers of the rise in child poverty is policy choices, which is why it is essential that the prime minister and chancellor use the upcoming budget to put in place measures to stop this happening. An excellent start would be to ensure families can keep more of their earnings under the universal credit.”

More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
march 2017 by asterisk2a
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

Britain is one of worst places in western Europe for asylum seekers | UK news | The Guardian
march 2017 by asterisk2a
Britain is one of the worst destinations for people seeking asylum in western Europe, according to a Guardian analysis of policies, data and reports of the conditions faced by the record recent influx of new arrivals.
At the start of a year-long project with three other newspapers on Europe’s refugee crisis, the Guardian has analysed the experience of refugees and asylum seekers in the European Union’s big five nations – the UK, Germany, France, Spain and Italy – and found the conditions in Britain do not compare well.
Only Italy, on the frontline of hundreds of thousands of people crossing the Mediterranean, fares worse. &! https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/mar/01/how-britain-hard-stance-refugees-reshaping-european-policy

We have entered a new era of conflict, warns new book
july 2016 by asterisk2a
In his new book, Irregular War (IB Tauris) , he reflects on Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram, Al Shabab, and the Taliban - all separate manifestations, he says, of a new non-state dynamic driving international conflict through asymmetric and hybrid warfare. But their significance is more fundamental. They are part of what Rogers calls “an historical shift towards revolts from the margins”. And such revolts are made more likely by “the widening global socio-economic divide and the onset of climate disruption”. [...] The causes of conflict are many and deep – economic, political, societal, environmental, demographic. [...] “the increasing marginalisation of the majority of the world’s people caused by the workings of the neo-liberal system of international economic activity” which concentrates most of the fruits of economic growth in the hands of a transglobal elite of some 1.5bn people.

//&! Why Brexit could hurt the US, too
april 2016 by asterisk2a
Washington fears that a decision to abandon the European project, in which Britain has been an often-reluctant participant since 1973, would threaten to unravel the union, a vital ally, as it struggles with disunity and unleash a new instability in an already dangerously volatile world.
While advocates of a British departure say the country will be stronger freed from the shackles of Brussels bureaucracy, opponents fear it could dismember the U.K. should Scotland decide its future still lies in the E.U. and demand a fresh independence vote. [...] And throughout his presidency, Obama has expressed irritation at the neediness of European leaders competing for the attention of the American president. He's grumbled that European nations won't do more for NATO and even publicly rebuked Cameron in a recent Atlantic magazine interview for not doing more to bring peace to Libya after a NATO intervention in 2011 pushed by him and other Europeans.

Shami Chakrabarti: ‘Who’s the most dangerous person in Britain? David Cameron’ | Voluntary Sector Network | The Guardian
march 2016 by asterisk2a
The outgoing Liberty director explains why plans to scrap the Human Rights Act threaten freedom, and why she won’t stop campaigning [...] I ask Chakrabarti – once branded by the Sun as “the most dangerous woman in Britain” – who she thinks deserves the “most dangerous” hallmark now. “Right now? David Cameron.” She says. “Actually, can I have more than one? Then him and that particular group in the cabinet now who are dedicated to scrapping the Human Rights Act. That group. They are an existential threat to the rights and freedoms of the most vulnerable people in our country.” [...] investigatory powers bill. “We wouldn’t let the state impose identity cards, but these,” she holds up her phone, “these we buy.”

EU referendum: Boris Johnson calls Cameron's Project Fact 'baloney' | Politics | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
"stay campaign is project fear" leave campaigners go without facts. [...] Chris Grayling, one of the six cabinet members who favour Brexit, had earlier dismissed a 28-page Cabinet Office report warning of what Cameron called a “decade of uncertainty” if Britain votes to leave, as “completely ludicrous”. Grayling accused his boss of running a “relentless campaign of fear”. Separately, employment minister Priti Patel, another prominent advocate for Brexit, ramped up the criticism of cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood’s decision to limit the support civil servants can provide to pro-Brexit ministers, describing it as “unconstitutional”. [...] Iain Duncan Smith “I have the highest opinion of the British people; [ //&! If it were a pure economic argument, where are the economists?! but it's about ideology, dogma and demagogy ... populism, propaganda, polarisation, manufactured consent, supported by right-wing media's manufactured consent ] &! bit.ly/1oKclJ1 &! Meet the teachers, charity workers, NHS staff and scientists Theresa May wants to kick out of Britain | Home News | News | The Independent
february 2016 by asterisk2a
In April, new immigration laws will see tens of thousands of skilled workers deported from the UK [...] The Government has responded to a petition urging it to scrap a new £35,000 pay threshold on non-EU workers, calling it a “modest” contribution to cut net migration to Britain. Yet the Government’s own analysis estimates the measure will cost up to £575 million to the taxpayer in the first year alone, and it has sparked a public outcry from the tens of thousands of people set to be affected. [...] employers have had since April 2011 to prepare. //&! From stop35k.org/#!blank/c1enr - "Tier 2 General Skilled Workers who do not make £35,000 salary or who have been in the UK for 6 years, will need to leave or be deported. The Home Office estimates this will cost taxpayers between £181million and £575million" [...] Other proposed legislation is to prevent people from EEA to work here if they do not earn 30k/y or more.

Pando: At what point is the convenience of technology outweighed by the constant stress?
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Yesterday, I wrote about new proposals to allow the government to trawl the social media accounts of visa applicants before allowing or denying entry to the US. Specifically, I wrote about my relief, as a visa-carrying foreign worker, at having deleted my social media accounts last year. For all the myriad reasons the government might declare me unworthy of living here -- particularly under President Trump -- at least an old dumb tweet won’t be one of them. [...] Connected technology was supposed to make our lives easier. And of course it has, in countless ways. But what it doesn’t seem to have done is made our lives less stressful...

Brexit-Befürworter träumen vom Singapur auf Steroiden - SPIEGEL ONLINE
february 2016 by asterisk2a
[...] Handel: Schwellenländer statt EU

Draft snooper's charter 'fails on spying powers and privacy protections' | World news | The Guardian
february 2016 by asterisk2a
Theresa May’s draft “snooper’s charter” bill fails to cover all the intrusive spying powers of the security agencies and lacks clarity in its privacy protections, a parliamentary committee has said. The intelligence and security committee said the draft legislation published by the home secretary suffered from a lack of sufficient time and preparation. It was evident that even those working on the legislation had not always been clear about what it was intended to achieve, it said.

Former BBC chief attacks secret government licence fee deal | Media | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
[ shifting off another item on the balance sheet (welfare budget) off the balance sheet, every dirty little trick. to achieve his set out agenda. onto another one, the public's, british media landscape. less of it. ] Mark Thompson said it is wrong to force corporation to shoulder cost of ‘social transfer’ to over-75s and that charter renewal talks have been acrimonious [...] Giving his his first interview about the BBC since he left in 2012, after eight years at the helm, Thompson said the broadcaster was having to pay for government policy. “It’s welfare … It’s totally inappropriate to use BBC to support social transfer in this country.” When George Osborne tried to impose the same cost on the BBC during negotiations in 2010, Thompson started writing his resignation letter, along with several BBC Trustees. This July the current director general, Tony Hall, agreed to shoulder the burden in return for relief from other costs.

Donald Trump and Isis both benefit from a powerful fuel: our fear | Arie W Kruglanski | Opinion | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. They privilege simplistic concepts that lack nuance and lend significant edge to leaders who talk tough and offer what psychologists call “closure”.

Protests in Poland as proposed laws curtail women's rights | World news | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
Campaigners are planning to step up resistance to Poland’s ultra-conservative government after it cleared a constitutional path for hardline law changes, expected to include a total ban on abortion and curbs to gender and human rights. Tens of thousands joined mass demonstrations in the run-up to the law change, which would curtail the independence of the constitutional tribunal – the country’s highest legislative court. But to the dismay of women’s rights activists, no protests greeted the government’s first concrete policy move – to scrap subsidies for IVF in public hospitals.

Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

Refugee Crisis Drives Rise of New Right Wing in Germany - SPIEGEL ONLINE
december 2015 by asterisk2a
For years, a sense of disillusionment has been growing on the right. Now, the refugee crisis has magnified that frustration. Increasingly, people from the very center of society are identifying with the movement -- even as political debate coarsens and violence increases. //&! Was kostet die Flüchtlingskrise? Changing the benefit rules for EU migrants no effect on migration - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
december 2015 by asterisk2a
[ Evidence: Tories working on the fringes again to satisfy stern neocons and potential UKIP voters. Always the promise to reduce migration with new quick fix schemes. Voters demands are symptoms of ill democracy, democracy for the rich. Its always the others ... not those on top of the ladder having party time. ] Sir Stephen Nickell, one of the three members of the OBR’s budget responsibility committee, was asked about this, and this is what he said: Changing the benefit rules for EU migration so that they become more difficult to obtain - you are asking me what impact that is likely to have. In my opinion: not much. I am prepared to say that any changes to benefit rules are unlikely to have a huge impact on migration flows. But to go further and start trying to analyse the actual consequences is not within our remit.

We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
december 2015 by asterisk2a
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. BBC independence 'eroded', says director general - BBC News
november 2015 by asterisk2a
In a speech to business leaders on Monday, Tony Hall will urge changes to the way the broadcaster is regulated. He wants licence fee payers to have a greater say than politicians. Lord Hall says there has been a "major change" over the past 20 years which has made the foundations of the BBC's independence "weaker". The government has yet to comment. "When I was working in news and current affairs in the '90s, the independence of the BBC was protected by a set of quiet customs and traditions," he will say. "Back then it was Willie Whitelaw who'd provided us with the certainty of a 15-year Charter, underpinning our independence by allowing us stability through the political cycle. [...] He also suggests recent licence fee settlements have been decided behind closed doors without a "full process".

Terror: Wer sind "die", wer sind "wir"? - Kommentar - SPIEGEL ONLINE
november 2015 by asterisk2a
november 2015 by asterisk2a

Überwachung in Großbritannien: Neues Gesetz vorgestellt - SPIEGEL ONLINE
november 2015 by asterisk2a
The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
november 2015 by asterisk2a
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Europe is becoming an undemocratic continent where force matters more than law | Comment is free | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Only banks, global corporations and the superrich have any power against this faceless semi-superstate [...] In the past year, on two occasions when tested, European solidarity fell apart. [...] The real power, meanwhile, sits with large corporations, banks and elites. And here’s the strangest thing: for all the power concentrated at the top, the EU lacks the will to operate purposefully in the multipolar global power system. We know, roughly, what the US wants. Ditto for China and Russia. Ask what Europe wants – in Ukraine, Syria or the Arctic circle – and you’ll draw a blank. In a multipolar world, whose chaos zones are expanding, effective states with clear diplomatic aims and red lines matter.

Prospect of TTIP already undermining EU food standards, say campaigners | Business | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Opponents of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership say EU negotiator has admitted to approving entry of banned goods [...] EU negotiators will resume controversial trade talks with the US on Monday amid claims that multinational companies have jumped the gun in advance of any agreement to import goods that are currently banned – including genetically modified crops and chemically washed beef – into European markets. A campaign group says that a report in a US journal concerning the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks show that Europe is already capitulating to huge pressure from the US to allow imports of previously banned goods before an agreement is reached. [...] [ as always its about] lower trade barriers and boost growth. [ Trade Deals like TTIP & TPP are better for US economically than a military invasion. who is excluded? BRIC. Who didnt want to join AIIB? USA. But who did? UK & Germany. This is about economic & political power/reach/influence]

Kolumne ǀ Vier Jahre nach Occupy — der Freitag
october 2015 by asterisk2a

These 5 Facts Explain the Worrying Rise of Europe’s Far-Right | TIME
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Economic instability, populist politicians and a refugee wave is changing the face of politics in Europe Another round of elections, another push from increasingly vocal nationalists. Austria’s far-right Freedom Party gave the Social Democrats a run for their money in local elections over the past weekend, but fell short of capturing Vienna’s mayoralty. What started as an oddity in European politics has quickly become a disturbing pattern. These five facts explain the rise of the radical right in Europe, its causes and its implications for the region.

Cameron responds to Question Time tax credits complaint | Money | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
[S]he & her four children were entirely dependent on a combination of working tax credits & child benefits because her business did not make a profit. “I get £400 a week in tax credits, child maintenance from my ex-partner & child benefit. And that’s what I live on. What I make from the business goes straight back into it.” Dorrell, who accused the Tories of telling lies to her and others in a similar situation [...] The House of Commons has approved the cuts to tax credits, with only a handful of Conservatives rebelling against the measures. [...] [The] IFS & the Resolution Foundation say the welfare cuts in Osborne’s summer budget will leave some of Britain’s poorest families up to £1,300 a year out of pocket. Paul Johnson, the director of the IFS, has said it is “arithmetically impossible” for workers not to lose out from the cuts. //&! bit.ly/1jsM5AQ - The ‘work penalty’ will hit the strivers of the country & youtu.be/wrbu6NFazfU & bit.ly/1Pn59NQ & bit.ly/1h98H3X

Working-class Americans feel screwed. I heard it across the entire country | US news | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
Donald Trump has exposed the opportunity gulf between those who make policy and those who live it – turning immigrants into scapegoats in the process [...] The disappointment, although often wrapped in anger over immigration, is at its core about diminished opportunity. It is consistent with the economic reality that has persisted over the last three decades: except for the very rich, Americans haven’t seen their wealth increase. The people I talked to are not entirely wrong; their particular job prospects and their particular wealth have been harmed. [...] The angry are mostly people who work with their hands, who feel stuck in a vise tightening from two sides: there is a greater number of people looking for the same jobs and there are fewer jobs available, since many of these jobs having moved overseas.

Facebook paid £4,327 corporation tax in 2014 - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
The latest revelations will reignite the debate about how much UK corporation tax companies pay at a time when several multinational corporations are being investigated by the European Commission over the tax arrangements they have with European Union member states. Google, Amazon, a division of the Fiat motor company and Starbucks are all subject to the investigation and the European Commission has said it could widen its probe further. The investigation came after Starbucks was revealed to have paid just £8.6m in UK corporation tax in the 14 years between 1998 and 2012, despite making more than £3bn in UK sales in the same period. Last week, EU finance ministers agreed to boost information sharing in response to the so-called LuxLeaks scandal that emerged last year. The scandal showed Luxembourg had issued hundreds of tax rulings allowing companies to lower their tax bill by funnelling their profits through the country. //&! bbc.in/1LJG6DY &! bit.ly/1R7PjEf

Russland und Syrien: Das Ende der alten Weltordnung - SPIEGEL ONLINE
october 2015 by asterisk2a

Did David Cameron’s conference speech manage to capture the centre ground? | Politics | The Guardian
october 2015 by asterisk2a
The prime minister stood up before his party in Manchester – and then studiously ignored heartland Tory topics. He dwelled instead on social justice, poverty and prison reform. It was an audacious attempt to reset British politics, move to the centre and consolidate his party’s grip on power. Will his move succeed, and how it might reshape the political landscape?

How The Socialist Surge is Growing - YouTube
october 2015 by asterisk2a
via Robert Reich on.fb.me/1Pn6XFK - According to a New York Times investigation reported this morning, just 358 families and the businesses they control have contributed over half the money to the 2016 presidential election so far – mostly to Republicans who have pledged to pare regulations; cut taxes on income, capital gains and inheritances; and shrink Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, two-thirds of Americans support higher taxes on those earning $1 million or more a year, according to a June New York Times/CBS News poll, and six in 10 favor more government intervention to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. And according to the Pew Research Center, nearly seven in 10 favor preserving Social Security and Medicare benefits as they are. To an extent we haven’t seen since the Gilded Age of the 1890s, the upcoming election is between a tiny group of super-rich and the rest of us. We must do everything possible to reclaim our democracy.

Michael Fallon: UK to send troops to Baltic region - BBC News
october 2015 by asterisk2a
About 100 British military personnel will be sent to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, the MoD has confirmed. A further 25 will be involved in a continuing training mission in Ukraine. Defence Secretary Michael Fallon said troops in the Baltic region would deter Russian aggression beyond Ukraine and reassure eastern European Nato members.
