Loneliness: The cost of the 'last taboo' - BBC News
There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK who have "chronic" loneliness, with links to poorer physical and mental health and increased use of GPs, hospitals and social services.
The campaign says it should be seen as a problem in public health terms, like obesity and smoking.
For a decade of an older person's life, the extra economic cost of loneliness is calculated as £6,000. [...] "Everyone's on their phones, they're closed off."

Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation? - The Atlantic
Psychologically, however, they are more vulnerable than Millennials were: Rates of teen depression and suicide have skyrocketed since 2011. It’s not an exaggeration to describe iGen as being on the brink of the worst mental-health crisis in decades. Much of this deterioration can be traced to their phones. [...] You might expect that teens spend so much time in these new spaces because it makes them happy, but most data suggest that it does not. [...] Teens who spend more time than average on screen activities are more likely to be unhappy, and those who spend more time than average on nonscreen activities are more likely to be happy. There’s not a single exception. All screen activities are linked to less happiness, and all nonscreen activities are linked to more happiness. // &! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40840823 - Children consuming online time 'like junk food'

Why am I so lonely when I have 565 friends? - BBC Three
Eight in 10 under 34 year-olds identify as 'always or often' lonely.
On top of that, stats say Britain is the loneliest country in the EU. Loneliness is such a big issue that it was even included in the Conservative, Labour and UKIP snap election manifestos.
But, why? And why are Britain’s young people bearing the brunt of it?

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! [...] you want to optimise the economy based on velocity of money (circulation of money), not share price and value extraction [...]

Media Websites Battle Faltering Ad Revenue and Traffic
[lots more competition for people's attention] The trouble, the publishers say, is twofold. The web advertising business, always unpredictable, became more treacherous. And website traffic plateaued at many large sites, in some cases falling — a new and troubling experience after a decade of exuberant growth. Online publishers have faced numerous financial challenges in recent years, including automated advertising and ad-blocking tools. But now, there is a realization that something more profound has happened: The transition from an Internet of websites to an Internet of mobile apps and social platforms, and Facebook in particular, is no longer coming — it is here. Why Everyone Must Get Ready For The 4th Industrial Revolution
For example, as automation increases, computers and machines will replace workers across a vast spectrum of industries, from drivers to accountants and estate agents to insurance agents. By one estimate, as many as 47 percent of U.S. jobs are at risk from automation. Many experts suggest that the fourth industrial revolution will benefit the rich much more than the poor, especially as low-skill, low-wage jobs disappear in favor of automation.

But this isn’t new. Historically, industrial revolutions have always begun with greater inequality followed by periods of political and institutional change. The industrial revolution that began at the beginning of the 19th century originally led to a huge polarization of wealth and power, before being followed by nearly 100 years of change including the spread of democracy, trade unions, progressive taxation and the development of social safety nets.

Why are YouTube stars so popular?
To non-fans, these tics can be irritating. The linguist Mark Liberman described them as an “intellectual used-car-salesman voice” akin to “high-energy sales pitches” or even a “carnival barker”.

But that’s another point about the popularity of YouTube’s stars: the way they divide fans from non-fans is a big part of their appeal too. [...] “Looking at survey comments and feedback, teens enjoy an intimate and authentic experience with YouTube celebrities, who aren’t subject to image strategies carefully orchestrated by PR pros. Teens also say they appreciate YouTube stars’ more candid sense of humour, lack of filter and risk-taking spirit, behaviours often curbed by Hollywood handlers.”

Life and death in the App Store | The Verge
[ land grab and winner takes all environment, the long-tail is not what it was supposed to be promised by some ] 'the app store resembles now a lottery' [...] Today, profiting from the App Store most often requires a mix of in-app purchases, subscriptions, and advertising. [...] Meanwhile, a fatigue is setting in among customers. There are now more than 1.5 million apps in the App Store (Android users have 1.6 million to choose from), but by 2014, the majority of Americans were downloading zero apps per month. And it turns out people simply don’t use most of the apps they do download. According to ComScore, the average person spends 80 percent of their time on mobile devices using only three apps.

Businesses call for faster UK broadband speeds - BBC News
'Mediocre' But the IoD believes the target should be higher and is calling for speeds of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps) by 2030, 1,000 times faster than the current official aim of 10 megabits per second (Mbps) by 2020. "Now is the time to set a bold new target for genuinely world-beating broadband," said Dan Lewis, senior advisor on Infrastructure Policy at the IoD, and author of the report. "We have the leading internet economy in the G20, and yet download speeds are mediocre and the coverage of fibre optic cable is woeful." He added: "Unfortunately, the Government's current target displays a distinct poverty of ambition." [...] Openreach decision The IoD report comes just days after communications watchdog Ofcom said BT must open up its cable network and allow competition to improve UK internet connections. Ofcom also said there was a digital divide in the UK between those with the latest technologies, and those without. ...

Pando: Hot or Not founder responds to Nancy Jo Sales' new book: "I don’t think we invented human nature"
Nearly every tweet I’ve read about Nancy Jo Sales’ new book “American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers” has been some variation of “I’m scared to read this.” Indeed by page 20, I started making plans to move to an Amish village by the time my daughter turns 12. The deeper I read, the more I was impressed by many of the young women Sales interviewed, and the more sorry I felt that we've given them this world.  [...] Sales also describes how young girls worship Kim Kardashian and derive their self worth from how many likes they get on Instagram.

Why doesn’t Whole Foods just take out Blue Apron, Plated et al?
But the biggest problem has to be churn. These services-- even if you love them-- burn you out. A small percentage of people have the time and desire to cook three nights a week over the course of a year. The recipes either don’t repeat favorites enough or offer too much duplication of sauteed chicken with slightly different ingredients placed around it. We spent months demoing them and boxes arriving soon started to elicit groans. It was a ticking time bomb crossed with the monotony of a to do list arriving on our doorstep.

Why Startups Are Doomed, Part Two — The Information
Jessica’s Friday column “End of Tech Startups” argued that today’s big technology companies are nimble, smart, and well run—and that until there is another fundamental technology disruption, the window of opportunity for startups is limited to more traditional markets with less competitive players. I agree with Jessica, but I don’t think she takes her argument far enough. This new generation of tech companies not only leverages technology to better compete, they also enjoy a position within enormous markets as marketplaces, and that makes them unassailable in a way that their historical brethren were not. The upshot is, I believe startups are going to be locked out of certain types of businesses forever.
