Saudi Arabia has 'clear link' to UK extremism, report says - BBC News
The Henry Jackson Society said there was a "clear and growing link" between Islamist organisations in receipt of overseas funds, hate preachers and Jihadist groups promoting violence.
The foreign affairs think tank called for a public inquiry into the role of Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations.
The UK's Saudi Arabian embassy says the claims are "categorically false".
Ministers are under pressure to publish a report on UK-based Islamist groups.
The Home Office report into the existence and influence of Jihadist organisations, commissioned by former Prime Minister David Cameron in 2015, has reportedly yet to be completed amid questions as to whether it will ever be published. &! http://henryjacksonsociety.org/2017/03/05/islamist-terrorism-analysis-of-offences-and-attacks-in-the-uk-1998-2015/

London attack: Theresa May says enough is enough after seven die - BBC News

"We believe we are experiencing a new trend in the threat we face as terrorism breeds terrorism," she said.
Mrs May said the UK's counter-terrorism strategy would be reviewed, as she promised to step up efforts to combat Islamist ideology and work with other countries to prevent the internet being a "safe space" for terrorists.
She said there was "too much tolerance of extremism in our country" and while it would involve "some difficult and embarrassing conversations", that must change. [...] Some analysts see this as a last desperate bid by IS to its supporters, following multiple setbacks in the Middle East where its self-proclaimed caliphate is shrinking fast. However, the ideology of IS is likely to survive those defeats and will continue to fuel terrorist attacks around the world. [...] With three attacks in close proximity, terrorism against soft targets is beginning to feel, to some people, like the new normal.
The brutal reality is that this kind of threat is absolutely typical of what jihadists sought to achieve in all their attacks across Europe.

Car finance deals soar to new record - BBC News
The Bank of England and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have raised concerns about such deals.
The Bank's worry is in relation to levels of consumer borrowing.
However Adrian Dally, head of motor finance at the FLA, said lenders were behaving responsibly.
"We do not share their concerns," he told the BBC. "Lending is responsible. This is a sustainable model going forwards." [...] That is largely because motorists can hand their cars back if they can no longer afford payments.
Ultimately it is the car manufacturers who carry the risk on such deals, as they guarantee second-hand values.

Researchers have answered a big question about the decline of the middle class - The Washington Post
“This idea that we’re having this progression of increasing incomes over time — I think that might be true for the upper regions of the income distribution but not for the median,” said Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard University economist who was not involved in the study. [...] The implication, Guvenen argues, is that economists should search for explanations for households’ current financial woes in the youth and childhood of today’s workers.

“We are maybe looking at the wrong place for the solution to stagnation in wages and rising inequalities,” Guvenen said. “To understand higher inequality, we should turn and take a closer look at youth.” /// &! one comment https://redd.it/69zf27 said part to do w competition. if you don't work for that money, others will. labour pool available for some kind of work. already applicable in the auto industry in usa uk and germany.

Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen: Wie Wirtschaftskrisen Populisten helfen - Kolumne - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Torture victims in high court challenge to Home Office over detentions | Law | The Guardian
Seven victims of torture who have been locked up in immigration detention are at the high court, challenging as unlawful a government policy that allows some torture survivors to be imprisoned.

The seven, who include victims of trafficking, a man kidnapped by the Taliban, and two men tortured because of their sexuality, say the government should no longer be able to routinely incarcerate people who have experienced persecution. The charity Medical Justice, which works to improve the health of immigration detainees, is also part of the judicial review challenge.

Trump signs new travel ban directive - BBC News
Donald Trump has, at last, unveiled his new immigration order, and it looks like government lawyers - and not just White House political operatives like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller - have had their input.
Gone are the most controversial measures of the old order, such as preference for Christian refugees and the suspension of existing visas and green cards.
The details of the action's implementation are outlined with greater clarity this time, with more than a week before the new rules kick in.

Budget 2017: Hammond to tell us the Brexit vote could have been worse | Business | The Guardian
consumers carried on spending and businesses continued to expand.

The picture for the public finances is also looking rosier compared with Hammond’s maiden autumn statement in November. [...] But here’s what the chancellor will not tell you: living costs have gone up and will continue to do so. The poorest will be hit hardest as the cost of essentials such as food and heating take a growing chunk out of already tight family budgets. Wages will struggle to match rises in inflation and the government’s benefit cuts mean that incomes will fall for the poorest people in Britain. In short, unless the government does something significant to improve living standards this week, inequality will start rising again.

More than politics, Theresa May’s true strength is her grasp of British culture | Rafael Behr | Opinion | The Guardian
While John Major and Tony Blair struggle with their Brexit defeat, the prime minister has read the national mood and is successfully navigating it // SHE IS NAVIGATING IT? OTHERS WOULD SAY like Blair SHE SITS THERE AS PASSENGER. // Culture and identity tend to be treated as peripheral expressions of whatever is happening in the economy, which is sometimes true but not always. May understands that. She is a more astute culture warrior than economist, and for now that is serving her well. // HAPPY TO DO HARD BREXIT EVEN IF IT HURTS THE ECONOMY "make the best of it" // To win power from New Labour, Cameron adapted to Blairish mode: self-consciously modern, socially liberal, metropolitan and relaxed about Europe. [...] There was always something absurd about “anti-establishment” language in the plummy tones of Boris Johnson or Nigel Farage. But their campaign did capture a rebellious spirit. Partly it was generalised frustration at the state of everything; partly it was counter-revolution – the backlash by people who sensed that their lives, interests and anxieties were the punchline to a joke at a fancy London dinner party. [...] liberals haven’t grasped the scale of their defeat. That is good for May, who navigates through the middle.

Mia Ayliffe-Chung: Backpacker's mum slams Trump 'terror' claim - BBC News
The mother of a backpacker who was stabbed to death in Australia has criticised the White House for labelling her death a "terror attack".
Mia Ayliffe-Chung, 20, who was killed at a hostel in Queensland in August, did not die as a result of terrorism, police have said.
Despite this, her death was included on a list of 78 alleged "terror" attacks released by the Trump administration.
Rosie Ayliffe said Mia's death must not be used to persecute innocent people.
How the BBC covered Trump's list of 'under-reported' terror attacks
The White House released the list of attacks to back up Mr Trump's claim the media was "under-reporting" attacks committed or inspired by the Islamic State group.

Steve Bannon: 'We're going to war in the South China Sea ... no doubt' | US news | The Guardian
The United States and China will fight a war within the next 10 years over islands in the South China Sea, and “there’s no doubt about that”. At the same time, the US will be in another “major” war in the Middle East.

UK faces return to inequality of Thatcher years, says report | Business | The Guardian
Pressure on the government to help struggling Britons has intensified after a leading thinktank warned that falling living standards for the poor threatened the biggest rise in inequality since Margaret Thatcher was prime minister.

The Resolution Foundation said Theresa May would need to make good on her pledge to support “just about managing” households as it released a report showing that rising inflation and an end to recent strong jobs growth would hit the least well-off hardest.

UK inflation: now it's the pound in your pocket being devalued | Business | The Guardian
According to the National Institute for Economic & Social Research inflation is heading towards 4% as the effect of Brexit uncertainty keeps the pound low and imports expensive. [...] The government has pledged to double down on austerity from April, with cuts to tax credits and other benefits as well as the savings made over the last five years.

Such a sharp spike in prices will strain household finances, especially when wages growth is expected to remain at around 2.5%.

Bank of England policymaker Michael Saunders said last week that developments in the labour market such as zero-hour contracts and agency working meant wages were unlikely to take off any time soon. The north of England and Midlands ranged between 10% and 15% below the UK average. [...] Sluggish productivity growth will intensify the pressure on workers as they face rising living costs, [...] “These are disappointing figures overall, with little sign that the persistent underperformance on productivity is coming to an end. Children of 'just managing families left out by grammars' - BBC News
Lack of access to grammar schools is not confined to the poorest children, those from "just managing" families are also left out, research suggests.
"There is a strong indication that families on below average earnings are not being helped by the current grammar school system," said the Sutton Trust.
Grammar schools in England should not expand until the government can ensure fair admissions, the charity argues.
Ministers said their plans would address these issues.

[ fetish of GDP ] Economic growth since the 1960s has been real, but the link between growth and personal prosperity has broken down, probably since the 1990s.
