In our focus on the digital, have we lost our sense of what being human means? | Genevieve Bell | Opinion | The Guardian
MAKE OUR OWN FUTURE - And of course, there are bigger questions about the role of technology more broadly. In making the machines smarter, we have sacrificed a little something of ourselves – we run the risk of being reduced to data and the decisions it drives. I believe we are more than data, more than just intelligence. I worry that, in our current focus on the digital, we have lost some of our agency and some of our sense of what being human might mean. But I don’t believe this is inevitable or irreversible.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

First fall in consumer spending for almost 4 years
Consumer spending has fallen on an annual basis for the first time in almost four years [...] Adjusting for inflation, real consumer spending by British consumers on Visa debit, credit and prepaid cards in May was 0.8 per cent lower than in the same month last year. Visa said that seasonally adjusted spending was 1.8 per cent lower in May compared to April. The figures are unofficial, but suggest that sluggish economic growth continued in the second quarter, after a first quarter in which the UK grew at the slowest rate in the G7. [...] household consumption, which accounts for more than 60 per cent of the economy. The Bank of England is in denial. Brexit shows people don't act rationally | Robert Skidelsky | Business | The Guardian
Our models of quantifiable risk fail when faced with radical uncertainty. // retail spending binge post brexit and in run-up. // The challenge is to develop macroeconomic models that can work in stormy conditions: models that incorporate radical uncertainty and therefore a high degree of unpredictability in human behaviour. [...] Keynes, for his part, didn’t think this way at all. He wanted an economics that would give full scope for judgment, enriched not only by mathematics and statistics, but also by ethics, philosophy, politics, and history – subjects dropped from contemporary economists’ training, leaving a mathematical and computational skeleton. To offer meaningful descriptions of the world, economists, he often said, must be well educated.

The Growth Trap
[ growing for growth sake! vs growing in a world/area that is not conducive to grow ] When Twitter went public in 2013, its stock soared and its value jumped to $25 billion. Its founders and early investors got rich. But since then, the company has been considered a failure, despite the fact that it boasts 320 million active users, because it's not growing fast enough. Douglas Rushkoff, author of "Throwing Rocks at the Google Bus: How Growth Became the Enemy of Prosperity," talks to Steve Paikin about why he sees the push for more growth as dangerous. // true capitalists (shareholder, crony, greedy) w/o self-regulation or governance extract all the value there is to extract and then leave, dispersing it to the few who already have [...] WE MUST REWRITE THE RULES OF THE GROWTH GAME ITSELF! [...] you want to optimise the economy based on velocity of money (circulation of money), not share price and value extraction [...]

Pressure grows for price on carbon ahead of UN signing
A group of world leaders and international finance chiefs has urged the world to rapidly expand the pricing of carbon pollution.
They argue that more than half of emissions of CO2 should be covered by a carbon price within a decade.
India has also called on rich countries to put a tax on coal to help poorer nations adapt to climate change.
These calls came ahead of a UN ceremony where some 155 countries are expected to sign the Paris Climate Agreement.

GoPro Isn’t Doomed Yet. But they must become a software company, fast.
GoPro needed to spend heavily in “video editing automation.”
GoPro needs software in spades, far beyond just something to make editing easier. The company that created the first mass-market visceral experience broadcasting device ought to have a hand in every dimension of the current live revolution, not just be one of its few cameras. That requires software. [...] Most consumers already have all the hardware they need to create video; what they need is software to make this infinity of images comprehensible. As the defensibility of hardware declines, GoPro has an advantage few other makers of software have: fans, tens or even hundreds of millions of them.

How much of a savings buffer do people need? - BBC News
The US-based financial site Money Under 30 differentiates between a "buffer" for cashflow problems and an emergency fund for major events. It recommends keeping between one week's and two weeks' take-home pay as the buffer. Translated to the UK, this would mean saving between roughly £400 and £800.
An emergency fund should allow for between six and nine months of expense, it adds. If these were to come to £1,000 a month, that's between £6,000 and £9,000.
But such a level of savings is in the realm of fantasy for many Britons.
A survey by the Money Advice Service has found that four in 10 adults in the UK do not have £500 or more in savings. Another by ING bank suggests 28% of UK adults have nothing at all in the bank.

UK consumes far less than a decade ago – 'peak stuff' or something else? | Business | The Guardian
From crops to energy and metals, average material consumption fell from 15 tonnes in 2001 to just over 10 tonnes in 2013 [...] UK households have also abandoned buying many resource-intensive goods common in the recent past – such as metal-heavy video recorders and hi-fi systems, vinyl records, CDs and books – as they shift to digital consumption. [...] The figures will spark fresh speculation that Britain and other developed economies have hit ‘peak stuff’, although some critics pour scorn on the quality of the ONS’s environmental accounts. In January, Ikea said the appetite of western consumers for home furnishings had reached its peak and consumption of many familiar goods was at its limit. Household spending on physical goods, including furnishings, clothing, cars and gadgets, decreased between 2002/03 and 2014, [...] Households now spend more on services than physical goods, he said. [...] [ saturation in some markets but we are not living in peak stuff ]

Apple, Samsung and Sony face child labour claims - BBC News
Human rights organisation Amnesty has accused Apple, Samsung and Sony, among others, of failing to do basic checks to ensure minerals used in their products are not mined by children. [...] "It is a major paradox of the digital era that some of the world's richest, most innovative companies are able to market incredibly sophisticated devices without being required to show where they source raw materials for their components," said executive director of Afrewatch (Africa Resources Watch) Emmanuel Umpula. "The abuses in mines remain out of sight and out of mind because in today's global marketplace, consumers have no idea about the conditions at the mine, factory and assembly line. We found that traders are buying cobalt without asking questions about how and where it was mined."

Under-40s worse off as result of state pension changes, data shows | Money | The Guardian
[ how do you save up when you can afford housing (nor even a mortgage, have credit cards (drinks and presents), and student loan. all the while tories help to prop-up the property bubble, the only wealth uk households actually have! ] Most people now in their teens, 20s and 30s will be worse off as a result of changes to the state pension system, while millions of older people will gain, according to the government’s own figures. The data will fuel concern that millions of younger people are suffering from the effects of what has been dubbed “intergenerational unfairness”, partly caused by the government targeting money and resources at the older generation. DWP issued the data to back up its assertion that the introduction of the new flat-rate state pension in April “will make millions of people better off” – but the figures also provide stark confirmation that younger people will be losers from the changes.

UK floods: Storm Frank threatens more misery - BBC News
A fresh storm threatens to bring more misery to parts of the UK, including areas already hit by severe flooding. Storm Frank is due to sweep in from Tuesday evening, with Cumbria and south and central Scotland at most risk. There are nine severe flood warnings - meaning "danger to life" - in England and Wales, mostly centred on York which was badly hit by flooding on Saturday. David Cameron has defended government spending on flood defences after the devastation across northern England. Floods minister Rory Stewart told the Today programme that the government was open to the idea of an external review being held. The Environment Agency said on Monday there would have to be a "complete rethink" of flood defences. December has seen communities in Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester and Yorkshire swamped by rising waters. Storm Frank poses a new threat in the wake of what Storm Eva brought over the Christmas weekend. [...] costs could exceed £1.5bn. [ Eva, Desmond, Frank ]

A tongue-in-cheek video is highlighting the plight of "Instagram husbands" - those poor partners who are stuck miserably photographing the exploits of their loved ones. Its creators say it's a joke about the shallow nature of social media - rather than a comment on gender politics. [...] Instagram skews heavily towards young people and women: according to one estimate, 68% of its users are female. Facebook and Pinterest also skew female, while Twitter and Tumblr are roughly balanced and Reddit and similar forums are predominately male, according to the Pew Research Center.

Ignoring watersheds, ignoring climate change: flooded by our ignorance | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
Storm Desmond’s floods expose the utter madness of government policies, both in the hills and at the Paris talks. It’s as if it had come to remind us of what’s at stake. The roof is being fixed but beware the house crashing beneath it | Business | The Guardian
Consumer spending is driving economic growth but household debt and the house price-income ratio is at a record high. Be afraid [...] It is worth recalling that when Osborne became chancellor five and a half years ago that he had two big objectives. The first was to repair the hole in the public finances, which is still very much a work in progress. The other was to shift the centre of gravity of the economy back towards making things for export. This remains a pipedream. [...] Despite the welcome pickup in business investment, the main driver of growth has been consumer spending, which has been boosted by low interest rates, the fall in inflation caused by lower oil prices, and a modest acceleration in earnings. [...] “not the ideal shape for the recovery” and it can say that again. The current recovery looks like all the previous recoveries. I’m not the first person to attempt this. There is a growing movement of people who are turning their back on consumerism and purchasing possessions in favour of buying experiences and travelling the world. In the US, the Minimalists have encouraged people to live with less, while in Canada Cait Flanders – who blogs at Blonde on a Budget – transformed her finances with a shopping ban.
Demnach hängen 5,2 Milliarden Kleidungsstücke in deutschen Schränken.

What are you running from? // the tip of the iceberg is off-label use of prescription drugs (Modafinil) for narcolepsy, ADHD and other conditions that give you the kick to focus ... on work. // Work to keep up with the Jonse's. // taking is time consuming. vs giving // commodification of human as resource, exchangable resource via capitalism // Love & Community // Do what ever it takes to get you through the day. // Good for the collective. // Coffee as gateway drug. // give everything up for success, use every thing for success // honor your needs! //

Popular Food Blogger Commits Suicide - YouTube
Comparison is the thief of life. especially to something edited like Facebook and Social Media in general. And photoshop and good flattering angles. // dwelling on negatives you can't change, bad. think about the things you can control. // liking yourself. // everyone is in your show as well, you are not the only freak you think you are. // self-esteem through being a force for good. purpose. autonomy. mastery. SELF-WORTH. You deserve to be happy. // living through the screen only. in safety. //

Why too much choice is stressing us out | Life and style | The Guardian
From jeans to dating partners and TV subscriptions to schools, we think the more choices we have the better. But too many options create anxiety and leave us less satisfied. Could one answer lie in a return to the state monopolies of old?
