Is Stephen Crabb the man to tackle this age of extreme inequality?
The Panama Papers will lead to the dynamiting of Tory credibility, but new work and pensions secretary, Stephen Crabb, is unlikely to prove the saviour of his party’s reputation. [...] Last autumn’s U-turn over cuts to working tax credits was a smoke screen. The axe will fall, only not everywhere, not just yet. From this week, existing universal credit claimants will lose up to £220 a month as the work allowance is pared back faster than the national living wage increases to replace it. [...] Short of taking a vow of poverty and retreating like Charles V to a monastery, there is nothing he can say now that will change the perception that he is at the head of a party that has a fundamental personal interest in preserving the advantages of the 1%.

Exercise 'not key to obesity fight', say scientists - BBC News
[ Food Politics of "a balanced diet and everything in moderation ] Exercise does little to tackle obesity, according to a group of doctors and sports scientists. Man removed from UK flight over 'prayer' message on phone | UK news | The Guardian
The Nigerian-born Christian believes the passenger next to him assumed he was a Muslim and jumped to the conclusion that he may be a terrorist. “That guy doesn’t know me and within two minutes he’s judging me,” he told the Guardian. “Even if I was a Muslim, it was pretty unfair the way I was treated. I don’t think anyone, irrespective of their religion should be treated in such a way. “If we keep on giving into this kind of bigotry and irrational fear, I dare say that the terrorists will have achieved their aim.” [...] But he now fears he is on a terrorist watchlist because when he returned the next day from his business trip, the electronic passport gate did not let him through and he had to speak to an immigration officer before proceeding. “Someone felt I was a terrorist because they saw the word ‘prayer’ on my phone and now I stand in uncertainty about my freedom of movement in and out of the United Kingdom,” he said.

Tory thinktank warns Elliott Johnson's parents against broader inquest | Politics | The Guardian
[ public blackmail and scaremongering fearmongering ] The parents of the Conservative activist Elliott Johnson have been warned by the Tory thinktank where he used to work that their son’s mental health and sexuality would be aired in public if they insisted on broadening the scope of the inquest into his death. [...] George Alliott, the lawyer representing Conservative Way Forward (CWF), the thinktank where Elliott Johnson worked until he was made redundant a month before his death, told the hearing that if the scope of the inquest was broadened it would lead to further questions being asked about Elliott’s sexuality and wellbeing. Addressing the coroner, Tom Osborne, Alliott said: “If this scope is to widen, you are going to have to conclude that it will need to involve references to Elliott’s mental health records and his sexuality.” [ wasn't there just a high court decision that mental health records are not allowed in sexual assault/rape cases (ie to deface victim) ]

EU referendum: Boris Johnson calls Cameron's Project Fact 'baloney' | Politics | The Guardian
"stay campaign is project fear" leave campaigners go without facts. [...] Chris Grayling, one of the six cabinet members who favour Brexit, had earlier dismissed a 28-page Cabinet Office report warning of what Cameron called a “decade of uncertainty” if Britain votes to leave, as “completely ludicrous”. Grayling accused his boss of running a “relentless campaign of fear”. Separately, employment minister Priti Patel, another prominent advocate for Brexit, ramped up the criticism of cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood’s decision to limit the support civil servants can provide to pro-Brexit ministers, describing it as “unconstitutional”. The Pentagon has fired the first shot in a new arms race | Mary Dejevsky | Opinion | The Guardian
In a speech in Washington last week, previewing his announcement, Ash Carter said he would ask for spending on US military forces in Europe to be quadrupled in the light of “Russian aggression”. The allocation for combating Islamic State, in contrast, is to be increased by 50%. The message is unambiguous: as viewed from the Pentagon, the threat from Russia has become more alarming, suddenly, even than the menace that is Isis. [...] In the last months of his presidency, this detachment is ending. The additional funds for Europe’s defence are earmarked for new bases and weapons stores in Poland and the Baltic states. There will be more training for local Nato troops, more state-of-the-art hardware and more manoeuvres. [ ... + MH17 downing w Russian ground to air defense missile ]

A day in court showed me the misery of Britain’s housing policy | Polly Toynbee | Opinion | The Guardian
The housing crisis they inherited has worsened as rents rise, but David Cameron and George Osborne’s cuts to social housing are a bizarre response: the housing and planning bill going through parliament marks the end of the social housing era. Not by accident but by deliberate policy, 88,000 council homes to rent will be lost, says the Conservative-controlled Local Government Association. Labour says the total will be 180,000 by 2020. Money is sucked out of social housing into the Treasury, as the 1% rent cut saves on the housing benefit bill by stealing funds due to pay for new social homes. Half of all renters get some housing benefit, with the continuous rise in rents. Cutting that support simply propels more into homelessness.

The Guardian view on fair play in politics: a Conservative coup | Editorial | Opinion | The Guardian
From trade union reform to parliamentary process, the Tories show a pattern of contempt for the protocols of democracy [...] Thanks to a crafty, albeit constitutionally permitted, parliamentary manoeuvre, a cut that will affect hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged young people went through without proper debate or vote on the floor of the Commons. David Cameron commands a slender majority, but it is enough to pass most of his legislative programme in a more transparent fashion. Only the most controversial elements risk obstruction, either through rebellion on the Tory benches in the lower house or rejection in the upper one. [...] That episode, like the vote on student grants, is consistent with a pattern displayed by this government of impatience with democratic norms, verging on contempt. One habit is bundling measures of primary importance up in secondary legislation. [...] lay the foundations for a long-term Conservative monopoly on government.

Under-40s worse off as result of state pension changes, data shows | Money | The Guardian
[ how do you save up when you can afford housing (nor even a mortgage, have credit cards (drinks and presents), and student loan. all the while tories help to prop-up the property bubble, the only wealth uk households actually have! ] Most people now in their teens, 20s and 30s will be worse off as a result of changes to the state pension system, while millions of older people will gain, according to the government’s own figures. The data will fuel concern that millions of younger people are suffering from the effects of what has been dubbed “intergenerational unfairness”, partly caused by the government targeting money and resources at the older generation. DWP issued the data to back up its assertion that the introduction of the new flat-rate state pension in April “will make millions of people better off” – but the figures also provide stark confirmation that younger people will be losers from the changes.

Why should Rachel Watt have to sleep in her wheelchair? | Frances Ryan | Opinion | The Guardian
This is the hidden face of Britain’s social care crisis: disabled people left without help in their own homes. Read most coverage of the cuts to social care and it is easy to believe the crisis solely affects older people. According to research by Scope, 83% of disabled people in this country are now living without sufficient hours in their care package. That means being unable to get out of the house or waiting 14 hours to go to the toilet. This is what happens when austerity strips £4.6bn from social care spending in five years. As the government squeezes local authorities, social care has been left with a “funding gap” – a gaping wound, shall we say – that is growing by £700m a year. The King’s Fund thinktank has told the Guardian that the financial prospects for Britain’s social care system in 2016 “could not be worse”. [...] The biggest trick the government can play is the myth that any of this is inevitable. [...] It is the political choice[.]

Civil servants will be banned from helping Brexit ministers, Cameron says - Politics live | Politics | The Guardian
He put Brexit on the table because it was popular and feared to lose votes to UKIP. Opportunist. Career Politician. Needs a script. And now is changing the script in order not to lose the plot. The public voting yes. // David Cameron has made it clear that civil servants will not be allowed to help ministers who want to make the case for Britain leaving the European Union. He set this out in a letter listing four rules that will apply to ministers who want to campaign for Brexit. [...] [ and makes clear what his cabinet and peers can vote on ] Ministers will only be free to dissent on the issue of staying in the EU or leaving. [...] Ministers who speak from the frontbench will be expected to support government policy. But “we need to be flexible and apply common sense”, Cameron said. A knighthood for Lynton Crosby: government under fire for political honours | UK news | The Guardian
The government has been accused of turning the honours system into an “old boy’s club” after Lynton Crosby, the political strategist who ran the Conservatives’ 2015 election campaign, was awarded a knighthood. [...] “The main thing he is known for is introducing the concept of aggressive negative campaigning, or as Boris Johnson described it: ‘the dead cat strategy’ >> !!! >> [which involves distracting the public from a politically difficult issue by creating shocking news]. << !!! << Hardly worthy of honouring in this way if at all,” said McDonnell. He said Crosby’s knighthood would make the public think the titles perpetuate “an old boy’s club”. The Republican presidential frontrunner and Islamic State both know how to exploit the fear and uncertainty so prevalent today and skillfully cultivate it [...] All these factors jolt people out of their comfort zones and foster existential anxieties that spawn yearnings for order and predictability. Apple raises concerns over UK's draft surveillance bill - BBC News
The US-based firm has passed on its thoughts to a parliamentary committee scrutinising the legislation. It focuses on three issues: encryption, the possibility of having to hack its own products, and the precedent it would set by agreeing to comply with UK-issued warrants. The Home Secretary Theresa May said last month that the proposed powers were needed to fight crime and terror. [...] But Apple appears to be concerned that the bill's language could still be interpreted more expansively and force the creation of a so-called "backdoor" to provide the authorities with access. Apple argues that the existence of such a backdoor would risk creating a weakness that others then might exploit, making users' data less secure. [...] Overseas warrants A second area of concern relates to the issue of "extra-territoriality". Existing British legislation - and the bill - maintain that companies need to comply with warrants for information wherever they are based and wherever the data resides.

David Cameron to curb migration from EU by targeting jobless | Politics | The Guardian
[ working on the fringes ] The prime minister’s plan to curb in-work benefits has met a wall of opposition from other EU governments, with many saying they would discriminate against workers from other member nations and cut directly across Europe’s commitment to free movement of labour. Terror: Wer sind "die", wer sind "wir"? - Kommentar - SPIEGEL ONLINE

Junior doctors on striking against contract changes - BBC News
A Effective 7-day care needs more investment beyond money already promised in the general election, "emergency" Budget 2015 post-election and maybe in Novermber 2015 Budget. It's not done my redefining un-social hours, and putting on the (financial) thump screws on junior doctors. Which equates an effective pay cut. Stupid. Doing more (40% of productivity) with the same is not possible anywhere, let along in an organisation that is already rated best and most efficient in the western world and runs on 0 margins for error or room for manoeuvre. And is already not meeting it's own set targets. // And then the phrase for austerity after the "emergency" budget 2015 post-general election, after "long-term economic plan" got old, "a strong economy guarantees a strong NHS" like WTF!

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck
