No one would listen to Stephen Fry if he was poor
Now he expects us to join him in condemning people who have been affected by events they could not possibly control.

And there are many of them. A recent study found that up to 80% of abused people had at least one psychiatric disorder by their 21st birthday: depression, anxiety, thoughts of suicide. Schoolyard bullying can be just as destructive, with one study arguing that bullying carried out by other children is five times more likely than neglect or abuse at home to cause anxiety.

Just as the body’s immune system is still forming in childhood, so too is the brain’s stress response. The effects of childhood trauma cannot be overstated: abuse, sexual abuse in particular, is devastating. Children need love, and they need to feel safe. Why Justice for a Murdered 17-Year-Old Transgender Girl Is So Important
But there remains one big question: Will the case be investigated as a hate crime? Though, according to the Advocate, Josh knew that Mercedes, an aspiring cosmetologist, was a transgender woman before he killed her, the motive for the crime is still unkown. According to Rodgers, who said she isn’t familiar enough with this specific case to know whether or not it qualifies, “The federal hate crimes law explicitly includes gender identity as one of its categories, so [there] could be a way to charge the crime federally if the state murder prosecution is unsuccessful for some reason.” [...] If Mercedes’s murder is charged as a hate crime, it will be a unique case, as most of the transgender murders last year were not classified in that way, despite the fact that there seems to be a clear epidemic. Gender theorist Judith Butler told Broadly last year that men often kill transgender women as a result of feeling threatened.

Diskriminierung von Frauen: Immer wieder, bis sich etwas ändert - SPIEGEL ONLINE
[ Art can't be divided by sexes ] Kaum ein Mann orientiert sich gerne nach unten. An etwas Unterlegenem.

Black MP Dawn Butler reveals she's witnessed 'many' incidents of racism in Parliament | Daily Mail Online
Days later she claimed that black Tory MP Kwasi Kwarteng had been selected for the Tory party in his safe Surrey seat for 'window dressing' and caused outrage by claiming he preferred the company of white people.   Explaining her latest experience of racism, Ms Butler told BBC 5 Live today: 'There was a time when I was in the lift. It was a Members' lift that Members of Parliament use specially in cases [where] we have get to places quickly.  'I was in the lift and some other MP said, 'This lift really isn't for cleaners'.' Ms Butler refused to name the MPs involved, but repeated a similar encounter she had with the former Tory minister David Heatcote-Amory in an MPs only bar.  She wrote in 2008 how she was confronted Mr Heathcoate-Amory in a MPs-only bar. 'He actually said to me, 'What are you doing here? This is for Members only',' she wrote. [...] 'He then proceeded to ask me, 'Are you a member?' And I said, 'Yes I am, are you?' And he turned around and said to his colleague,

Film producer shares shocking intros for women in scripts - BBC Newsbeat
Jennifer Lawrence triggered a big debate on gender inequality and Hollywood sexism last October. She said she got mad at herself for failing to negotiate when she found out she was getting paid less than her male co-stars. The Hunger Games actress said there was "an element of wanting to be liked that influenced my decision to close the deal without a real fight". British actress Rachel Weisz told Newsbeat she thinks there's a difference between stories for male and female characters in cinema. "Women are actually not allowed to be difficult, interesting, complex, three-dimensional," she said. "Female characters have to be sweeter and more likeable than a male character would have to be." //&! bit.ly/1QfkFNB

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

Naomi Wolf - The groundbreaking gender theorist Dr Michael Kimmel...
The groundbreaking gender theorist Dr Michael Kimmel of Stony Brook University -- who has written the most important books about masculinity in our current national and global discussion, including his recent bestseller Guyland -- shares his not-to-be-missed TED talk about why gender equality helps us all, male and female. If everyone framed feminism in this kind of common-sense, inclusive language, it would have far fewer obstacles in front of it, and far greater clarity as a concept in the mind of the culture. --- http://www.ted.com/talks/michael_kimmel_why_gender_equality_is_good_for_everyone_men_included

Ellen Pao: ‘I Have Decided to End My Lawsuit Against Kleiner Perkins’ | Re/code
Still, Pao underscored that the deck was stacked against her in terms of resources. “I think it is wrong that employees have to pay in this situation, but I simply cannot afford the risks of more costs to fight a firm with massive PR and legal resources,” she said. “The court system is not set up to create an even playing field.” [...] To be clear, Kleiner and I have not reached any agreement to settle this matter. Settlement might have provided me with financial benefits, but only at the great cost of silence." I've been viciously attacked for daring to start a women's tech site | Media Network | The Guardian
So yes, my site has ‘feminine’ branding. Yes, we cover fashion and beauty as well as phones and drones. And that is entirely deliberate. It’s okay to be a woman who likes tech. It’s also OK to not like clothes and makeup. But many people seem to believe that to achieve equality, we all have to pretend we’re genderless, faceless ‘users’, and that doesn’t help anyone. Acceptance isn’t about ditching who you are to fit in with the crowd. It’s about the crowd recognising that you have differences and welcoming them.

Tech’s Privilege Barrier — The Information
Behind the articles we write about hot startups and funding rounds is a truth that needs a headline of its own: The technology industry is not as meritocratic as it may seem. For this column, I am focusing specifically on entrepreneurs, the people who found companies and beat the odds to turn them into something big. By many measures, the industry is incredibly fair with relatively few barriers to entry. You could, in theory, build the next Snapchat or WhatsApp with a good idea, a laptop and barely any capital. The reality is a little different. Rags to riches tales (like Steve Jobs or WhatsApp’s Jan Koum) get a lot of attention and certainly exist. But the “anyone can make something of himself” narrative ignores the fact that to go from idea to successful company you need a lot of other ingredients, ingredients where privilege helps a lot.

The article won praise too though for highlighting the discrepancy between the proportions of male and female MPs who are parents, [...] 45 per cent of female MPs were childless, compared with 28 per cent of men. Former Reddit CEO alleges co-founder Alexis Ohanian fired Victoria Taylor, not Pao
via redd.it/3d6asv // nyti.ms/1gz0Iks // yishan - former CEO :: Alexis wasn’t some employee reporting to Pao, he was the Executive Chairman of the Board, i.e. Pao’s boss. He had different ideas for AMAs, he didn’t like Victoria’s role, and decided to fire her. Pao wasn’t able to do anything about it. In this case it shouldn’t have traveled upstream to her, it came from above her. Then when the hate-train started up against Pao, Alexis should have been out front and center saying very clearly “Ellen Pao did not make this decision, I did.” Instead, he just sat back and let her take the heat. That’s a stunning lack of leadership and an incredibly shitty thing to do. I actually asked that he be on the board when I joined; I used to respect Alexis Ohanian. Guess Who Doesn’t Fit In at Work - NYTimes.com
[ rejecting an applicant because you don't see a fit is your fault by you limited point of view and field, at the end its about the work not necessarily to bond over drinks, sport, parties, ping pong, strip clubs and rating of porn stars and female co-workers ] Discovering shared experiences was one of the most powerful sources of chemistry, but interviewers were primarily interested in new hires whose hobbies, hometowns and biographies matched their own. Bonding over rowing college crew, getting certified in scuba, sipping single-malt Scotches in the Highlands or dining at Michelin-starred restaurants was evidence of fit; sharing a love of teamwork or a passion for pleasing clients was not. Ellen Pao Says Silicon Valley Isn’t A Meritocracy. It’s Not. | TechCrunch
Pao also took issue with the “pipeline issue” excuse for not hiring diversely. “I hate the pipeline issue,” Pao said. “It allows people to say, ‘I’m doing my best, it’s out of my hands. There’s a whole slew of things that can make it more fair.'” Swisher said she felt the same way about unconscious bias: It allows people to absolve themselves of responsibility for bias. Pao said she did not think Silicon Valley, a place where it’s possible to have all white male meetings all day every day, was a meritocracy. “I think SV aspires to be a true meritocracy … but there is not an even track to success. No. With 6% women in VC, level of funding for women-led startups, it just doesn’t seem that that could possibly be the case.” // bit.ly/1HV44Hg Williams leads unconscious bias workshops that aim to educate employees on the science behind decision-making and encourage a "culture where employees are comfortable with -- & held accountable for -- calling out prejudice, both blatant and subtle.

Mansplaining the Ellen Pao trial & fixing the gender issue in venture capital | Calacanis.com
To understand why these VC firms are all male in many cases is to understand that they are not really businesses — they are partnerships. In my experience they operate more like social clubs, sports teams or, wait for it, fraternities. Because their business is not actually building something, but rather sitting around talking about which founders they should back to build something, the required skill is “getting along” and “shooting the shit” and “debating.” In a way, they’re more like debate clubs than corporations. That’s why they constantly go on retreats to try and bond and build trust with each other. [...] They want to build enough trust so that if they say no to Google or Facebook, they are able to keep functioning in the face of such a huge miss! [...] Changing this system will be very hard. What’s at Stake in the Ellen Pao Case | Re/code
the clubby world of venture capital, a male-dominated culture that has often been criticized as an insular fraternity of privileged white men despite its veneer of being a meritocracy. [...] While gender inequality has always been an issue in Silicon Valley, it has now come to dominate more of the conversation in the industry. Venture capital firms in particular have appallingly few female partners. [...] But Kleiner Perkins still has more to lose. Though it is an icon of Silicon Valley, having provided funding for historic winners like Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Sun and Google, it has, in recent years, been upstaged by younger and flashier firms.
