England and Wales death rate rise linked to longer stays in hospital | Society | The Guardian
The sharp rise in the death rate in recent years could be down to the number of people being kept too long in hospital, inadequate social care and austerity-linked pressures on the NHS, academics say.

About 7,800 extra deaths a year in England and Wales are being caused by the dramatic increase in the number of people being forced to stay in hospital longer than necessary because they cannot safely be discharged, it is claimed.

Loneliness: The cost of the 'last taboo' - BBC News
There are an estimated 1.2 million people in the UK who have "chronic" loneliness, with links to poorer physical and mental health and increased use of GPs, hospitals and social services.
The campaign says it should be seen as a problem in public health terms, like obesity and smoking.
For a decade of an older person's life, the extra economic cost of loneliness is calculated as £6,000. [...] "Everyone's on their phones, they're closed off."

Eight in 10 under 34 year-olds identify as 'always or often' lonely.
On top of that, stats say Britain is the loneliest country in the EU. Loneliness is such a big issue that it was even included in the Conservative, Labour and UKIP snap election manifestos.
But, why? And why are Britain’s young people bearing the brunt of it?

How loneliness affects the well-being of the old and young - BBC News
[ thought to be twice as bad to health as obesity ] Bereavement, relationship breakdown and mental health issues can all lead to loneliness that many find hard to cope with and even talk about. The Campaign to End Loneliness suggests more than a million people in the UK are affected and it isn't just a problem for the elderly, with many young and middle-aged sufferers too. [...] "You have loads of people to do things, but nobody to do nothing." [...] "Age of Loneliness."

Leslie Jamison: confessional writing is not self-indulgent | Books | The Guardian
[ no judgement. empathy. compassion. see Dr Gabor Mate Rich Roll Podcast #189 ] When they confessed things to me, these strangers were offering something but they were also asking for something. They were asking for the subject of the book itself: empathy. They wanted an enactment of its central principle, its primary call: to pay attention. Even when they didn't say they wanted this, I felt I owed it to them. The professor struggling with chronic headaches wasn't asking for anything, she was just offering a response: "I find the thing that wears you down the most is pain. To wake up and as you gain consciousness to feel the pain again, and wanting it to not be so, but yet it is, and having to face that reality hundreds, in my case thousands, of days in a row. It transforms you and disconnects you from everyone, even those who want to understand."

"We often see parents who are going without food so that they can feed their children, and these parents often struggle to afford enough nutritious food for their children too." He said the Trust did not believe anyone should have to go hungry in the UK, and was working with the public, charities and politicians to "find solutions to the underlying causes of food poverty". [...] "Eating and drinking well is critical when it comes to staying healthy and independent, yet this can become more difficult as we get older. [...] She said people were making choices about whether to pay a bill or feed the family. [...] quite often by the time they come through our doors and need to be admitted, the damage is already done.
