The problem with automation isn’t technology. The problem is capitalism. // [ Deflationary pressure, 3bn people in developing world and frontier markets unemployed, waiting to join workforce. ] [ who buys the gadgets and widgets when half the world is unemployed ] // This time, as Martin Ford argues in Rise of The Robots, education and upscaling won’t help us. There will simply be fewer jobs to go around, as everything from accountancy to journalism will be done faster, cheaper and more efficiently by machines. The result, as Jerry Kaplan agrees in Humans Need Not Apply, is that billions will be left destitute – unless we radically rethink our way of keeping people fed.

As Ryan Carson, co-founder of the education startup Treehouse, put it: “You get all day Friday off, instead of pretending like you’re working when you’re not.” [...] The most important reason to work fewer days, of course, is that it’s good for families, friendship, hobbies and the human spirit. But the most interesting implication of the current experiments, backed by some academic research, is that it appears to be good for productivity and work quality, too. Partly that’s because desk-based “knowledge work” relies on plenty of brain rest as well as exertion.

Proactively going after projects that don't yet appear to pose a risk may not seem as heroic, but is a more sensible tactic than waiting for them to fall apart first. (Another CII-supported initiative, The Fuzzing Project, proactively looks for bugs in software via automated testing.)

I'm old enough to remember discussions of 40 or 50 years ago about how we'd fill our days when most kinds of human labour were done by machines. Technology is largely a succession of time-saving devices. It's strange, then, that an age of unprecedented technological advance should also be one of such acute time-poverty. Are we really dreaming of living more slowly? Or could it be that many of us are secretly addicted to the fast life? [... being busy became a status symbol, of being needs and important ... for other peoples life/people depend on us ...] [...] the fact that we're going to die. By being always on the move and never leaving ourselves without distraction, we can avoid such disturbing thoughts.
