Scans prove there's no such thing as a 'male' or 'female' brain | New Scientist
Despite persisting stereotypes, girls are no worse than boys at science and maths subjects, either. “People get wedded to the idea that being male or female is highly predictive of having different aptitudes or career choices,” “This study fights against the idea that these outcomes are based on biological differences, as opposed to cultural expectations.” Other body systems are also often wrongly considered to be either male or female, [...] “There are differences between men and women when you look in large groups, and these are important for diagnosis and treatment,” she says. “But there are always more differences within genders. We always need to look at culture, environment, education and a person’s role in society,” [...] “It’s a shame that people’s experience alone isn’t enough for us to recognise as a society that non-binary gender is legitimate.”

Leslie Jamison: confessional writing is not self-indulgent | Books | The Guardian
[ no judgement. empathy. compassion. see Dr Gabor Mate Rich Roll Podcast #189 ] When they confessed things to me, these strangers were offering something but they were also asking for something. They were asking for the subject of the book itself: empathy. They wanted an enactment of its central principle, its primary call: to pay attention. Even when they didn't say they wanted this, I felt I owed it to them. The professor struggling with chronic headaches wasn't asking for anything, she was just offering a response: "I find the thing that wears you down the most is pain. To wake up and as you gain consciousness to feel the pain again, and wanting it to not be so, but yet it is, and having to face that reality hundreds, in my case thousands, of days in a row. It transforms you and disconnects you from everyone, even those who want to understand."

James Dawson criticises parents who attacked his LGBT guide for children | Books | The Guardian
“In 2015, when you read of people comparing gay people to paedophiles you just despair,” “I always think, as a community, we’ve come so far and achieved so much, but then you read something like that and realise there is still such small-mindedness and hatred left to contend with.” Dawson, who recently came out as transgender, pointed to the young LGBT people of Alaska “and the message they’re receiving from this furore: they must be so terrified to come out if this is the reaction they think they’ll get”. [...] Libraries have always been the natural sanctuary of marginalised young people and long may they remain open

Rules banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood to be reviewed | Politics | The Guardian
A spokesperson for the gay rights campaign group Stonewall said: “We want a donation system that is fair and based on up-to-date medical evidence. Currently gay and bi people cannot give blood if they have had sex in the past 12 months, regardless of whether they used protection. Yet straight people who may have had unprotected sex can donate. “These current rules are clearly unfair and we want to see people asked similar questions, irrespective of their sexual orientation, to accurately assess the risk of infection. Screening all donors by sexual behaviour rather than by sexual orientation would increase blood stocks in times of shortage and create a safer supply by giving a more accurate, non-discriminatory assessment.”

Charlie Sheen discloses HIV positive diagnosis: 'It's a hard three letters to absorb' | Culture | The Guardian
Today Show host Matt Lauer asked Sheen why he continued to bring people including prostitutes to his home even though they were threatening him. Sheen said it was because he was depressed. He said that the period in March 2011 when he appeared on television and online making absurd claims and going on long tirades was not tied to his HIV status. “I wish I could blame it on that – that was more roid rage,” he said. [...] CBS fired Sheen from the long-running sitcom Two and a Half Men in March 2011 after the Golden Globe-winning actor had a public meltdown and criticised the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. Filming had been disrupted in the previous year as Sheen, who was the highest-paid actor on television at the time, received treatment for drug addiction. //&! Mental health equality call gets high profile backing - BBC News
The government increased overall mental health funding to £11.7bn in 2014/15. But Mr Lamb said people with mental ill health "don't get the same right to access treatment on a timely basis that everyone else gets". He called it a "historic injustice." His son was diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder at the age of 15 and Mr Campbell has spoken about his battle with depression. Inequality in care The NHS became officially responsible for ensuring the standard of care for the mentally ill was equal to that of physically ill people in 2012. In the spring, the government pledged an extra £1.25bn largely for children's mental health over the next five years. [...] It also introduced the first waiting time targets in mental health, guaranteeing treatment within 18 weeks. But the campaign says not enough has been done to address a continuing inequality in care standards and funding. [...] The life expectancy for people with mental health problems remains 20 years lower ...

Celebrating the hidden history of disabled people’s fight for civil rights | Frances Ryan | Society | The Guardian
Burgess says the exhibition aims to tell the story of a campaign movement that’s been largely ignored up to now. “If it is covered, it’s often not about people demanding change, it’s about ‘welfare’ or rights being ‘given out’,” he says. The exhibition also celebrates the Disability Discrimination Act, which this week marks its 20th anniversary, and the activists who made the law a reality. With the passing of the landmark DDA, for the first time in Britain the law provided disabled citizens with access to the workplace (employers were required to make “reasonable adjustments” to work and premises) and, through later amendments, to education and transport.

Every Day I Want To Quit Social Media
[ no more time to reflect and think for yourself ... we are all and feel Alon Together. ] I am drowning in a sea of anxiety created by Twitter and Facebook. [...] We all want to be recognized as clever or witty. [ your best side, public ] [...] I ended up on social media for a reason, and though the reason escapes me during moments of sheer panic and anxiety, I take part, no matter what — the pursuit of relevancy, or, in the strictest sense of the term, validation, is an imperative that exists as a key part of humankind’s quest for meaning. Firm 'hides' university when recruits apply - BBC News
There will be a "university-blind" approach to selection, so that the name of the university attended will not be known. The aim is to find students with "potential" and to prevent the recruitment process producing an intake from a narrow range of universities and social backgrounds. "Improving social mobility is one of the UK's biggest challenges," said David Sproul, senior partner and chief executive of Deloitte UK. But Mr Sproul said there was also a "business imperative", as firms needed "to hire people who think and innovate differently, come from a variety of backgrounds and bring a range of perspectives". The move by Deloitte is the latest in a wave of changes by graduate recruiters wanting to look beyond academic results.

For These Millennials, Gender Norms Have Gone Out Of Style : NPR
More than two-thirds of people ages 14 to 34 agree that gender does not have to define a person in the way that it used to[.] And 6 in 10 say that men & women do not need to conform to traditional gender roles or behaviors anymore. [...] defying gender expectations. "This generation views gender as a mark of self-expression — they view it as a way of displaying their full sense of self," she says. For example, Rae Tutera, who will appear in an upcoming documentary produced by Lena Dunham about gender nonconformity in fashion, says that the first time she felt like herself was in a men's suit. Tutera, 29, says she is "on the masculine side of the gender spectrum." [...] "Sometimes you have to act braver than you feel," she says, remembering what it felt like to enter a fancy men's suit store in Manhattan. Feminine Beauty: A social construct? // The French existentialist writer Simone de Beauvoir famously declares in her book The Second Sex that a woman isn’t born a woman, rather she becomes one. This Labor Day, Reflect On Diversity And The Future | TechCrunch
Our increased awareness has meant that more and more news stories have come out about the bad behavior of members of our community. The list is long, from startup CEOs and their fraternity-era emails, to venture capitalists who attempt to turn pitch sessions into romantic evenings. Yet despite such discussions, there remains a virulent group opposed to efforts to make our culture more inclusive, opposition that I honestly have never quite understood. Thankfully, women are starting to get the infrastructure to support their technology careers that they should have had years ago. While shaming is a useful and important tactic, ultimately it is our ability to foster the next generation of female engineers and entrepreneurs that will change our culture for the better.

European Investor Admits He Pestered Female Entrepreneur For Sex In “Deal” Email | TechCrunch
But the way tech investing works is that people tend to invest in people like themselves. The horrible laws of homophily, the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others, mean that they inevitably prefer to invest in people like them, and the cycle continues. Men tend to invest in men. Yet tech is forming the world as we know it today. It pervades every part of our world and will do for rest of human history. And this is a world that women occupy. Women who have their own capacities and ambitions to succeed and to make their impact in their own way. [...] We have to work out what it means for men and women to work equally in this industry — since we have so few examples of women rising to the top. || 2nd girl @luciemontel / @geschehaas facebook.com/geschehaas linkedin.com/pub/gesche-haas/4/773/b59 || http://bit.ly/VHbD0c http://bit.ly/1tnKPPf http://bit.ly/1obLldz http://tnw.co/1AxSAW1 http://dailym.ai/1qqqmFj http://bit.ly/1tjEy80 +YC http://on.recode.net/YFCETT

Isabell Suba: Männer zeigen Filme, Filmbranche, Sexismus, Quote - SPIEGEL ONLINE
- http://www.spiegel.de/video/neu-im-kino-maenner-zeigen-filme-frauen-ihre-brueste-video-1512781.html

Study Finds Something Disturbing Happens to Kids Forced into Traditional Gender Roles - Mic
The idea that gender is "imposed" on a person might be confusing to some people, particularly those who have always felt at home in their bodies. But a study conducted by the University of Warwick's Centre for the Study of Women and Gender proves Cox's point, concluding that children "with fixed ideas about what should be considered 'masculine' and 'feminine,' can actually be detrimental to their physical and mental health," according to ThinkProgress writer Tara Culp-Ressler.  >> http://thinkprogress.org/health/2014/08/07/3468380/gender-roles-health-risks // http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit_identity_theory

How Guardians Of The Galaxy Triumphed Over The Film Industry's Backwards Thinking - CinemaBlend.com
This is a kind of sexism that is often overlooked as harmless stereotyping. But that locked-in concept of gender expectation was a roadblock for Perlman again and again, until Marvel trusted in her passion and talent, so overlooked any preconceived notions based on her sex. To Marvel Entertainment's credit, their filmmakers overcame institutional sexism biases to trust in the writer over her gender identity. And because they did, we--all of us--get a movie that by nearly all accounts is astounding and a hell of a good time.

The female Pinterest engineer who pressed tech giants to air embarrassing diversity numbers - San Francisco Business Times
via https://twitter.com/mialoira/status/495027092367478784 || https://twitter.com/beltzner/status/494977730677440512 || https://twitter.com/triketora // In her experience, Chou said women engineers face significant, sometimes subtle, obstacles, starting with low performance expectations and less-than-plum assignments. "Pinterest was the first place where I felt like an engineer," said Chou. "It's hard to explain or articulate. When I came here, I was treated as an equal." Sometimes the discrimination is not subtle, like the time when a male engineer at a computer language conference asked her, "What do you do? Photocopy s---?" One major fact that advocates say must be addressed is that far fewer young women than men are learning computer science while in school. // http://www.codedoc.co/directors-thoughts/

The Dispute Between Radical Feminism and Transgenderism
AND here the critique http://bit.ly/1tXlqLW & http://bit.ly/1ujpPJ9 // http://bit.ly/V1UxtS // http://bit.ly/1orNN4F // "In failing to provide a semblance of balance to the voices in the piece, this account becomes hopelessly skewed, and becomes little more than a radical feminist propaganda piece. Early on in her essay, Goldberg presents an extremely simplified and stereotyped view of trans women’s identities. She writes: “Trans women say that they are women because they feel female — that, as some put it, they have women’s brains in men’s bodies.” First, considering that the length of the article discusses trans people (and focuses heavily on trans women), to reduce the explanation of their complex experiences to three words — “they feel female” — is offensively reductionist. While such a passing nod to trans experiences might be not be out of place in a more LGBTQ-geared publication, in a more general consumption magazine[.]" + http://bit.ly/VkWUIA + http://huff.to/1Bo9aJr

Memo to my daughter: “Keep your eye on the ball and hit hard” | PandoDaily
What I love about Abramson’s [...] she’s named it, she’s owned it, but she doesn’t make herself a victim. She knows she lives in a sexist world and that makes her victories– and even her defeats– that much sweeter. This is how we should talk about women in the world.
