Michael Shermer about Lance Armstrong and Mitt Romney
And while I'm ranting...Tyler Hamilton's new book, The Secret Race, reveals that Lance Armstrong made positive drug tests "go away" by calling the president of the governing body of the sport (the UCI) and making donations to their drug testing agency (WADA). That level of corruption is a microcosm of what goes on between government and the rich. The problem isn't rich people, any more than the problem is that some athletes like Lance Armstrong are incredibly successful. It is that the system can be hacked and rigged and cheated. Nothing wrong with Lance (or Romney) making lots of money through hard work. The problem is what the system allows them to do with that money that is unfair to those who want to compete fairly. Lance's money bought him the best doping doctors to the exclusion of other cyclists. The rich can buy politicians in the same way. The problem is not the money, it is that "we" (Congress) allows the money to be used to buy politicians. Solution: fix the damn system ...

Pension Pulse: Rottenness of the World?
On that gloomy note, I leave you by recommending Joe Nocera's New York Times article, Sheila Bair’s Bank Shot. Like Brooksley Born, Ms. Bair tried to do the right thing but she realized her efforts are futile. The reality is that no matter what measures regulators implement to reign in banks, the rottenness of the world always prevails.

Patent Bill Shows Wall Street Has Clout in Washington - NYTimes.com
The legislation was initially introduced by Senator Charles E. Schumer, a New York Democrat, with an even narrower view: to protect the interests of his big bank constituents in a dispute with DataTreasury Corporation of Plano, Tex., a company that owns dozens of patents for processing digital copies of checks.
Wall Street fought for the bill because it says it has been held hostage by holders of “business method” patents that should never have been granted by the patent office in the first place. Banks like JPMorgan Chase have been fighting DataTreasury over its patents for years.
The language in the bill is expansive. It covers patents for “a financial product or service” as well as “corresponding apparatus for performing data processing or other operations used in the practice, administration, or management of a financial product or service.”

Op-Ed Columnist - Obama Versus the Corporations - NYTimes.com
populist uprising. Yet the antics of the socialism-and-death-panels crowd are only part of the story of anti-Obamaism, and arguably the less important part. If you really want to know what’s going on, watch the corporations.
How can you do that? Follow the money — donations by corporate political action committees.
One answer is taxes — not so much on corporations themselves as on the people who run them. The Obama administration plans to raise tax rates on upper brackets back to Clinton-era levels. Furthermore, health reform will in part be paid for with surtaxes on high-income individuals. All this will amount to a significant financial hit to C.E.O.’s, investment bankers and other masters of the universe.

Obama in the position FDR described in a famous 1936 speech, struggling with “the old enemies of peace — business and financial monopoly, speculation, reckless banking, class antagonism, sectionalism, war profiteering.”
