Weight loss surgery 'cuts risk' of diabetes and heart attacks - BBC News
30% of people "relapse" after 2 years and start to gain weight by cheating (ie making snickers or mars bar smootie). Cancer virus discovery helped by delayed flight - BBC News
Epstein Barr virus // Wikipedia - It is best known as the cause of infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever). It is also associated with particular forms of cancer, such as Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, gastric cancer, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and conditions associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), such as hairy leukoplakia and central nervous system lymphomas. There is evidence that infection with EBV is associated with a higher risk of certain autoimmune diseases, especially dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome, and multiple sclerosis. Some 200,000 cancer cases per year are thought to be attributable to EBV. //&! http://nutritionfacts.org/?s=chicken //&! NHS could be 'overwhelmed' by people with long-term medical conditions | Society | The Guardian
The soaring number of people with long-term medical conditions [chronic] is threatening to "overwhelm" the NHS [...] The challenges posed by patients with chronic medical conditions are so great that they represent the "healthcare equivalent to climate change" and must force the NHS to undertake a major rethink of how it cares for such patients, Dr Martin McShane says in an interview with the Guardian. [...] 70% of the NHS's £110bn budget – £77bn – as well as £10.9bn of the £15.5bn spent on social care in England, [...] NHS will not bridge the £30bn gap that it fears will have emerged by 2020 between its budget and the volume of care needed [...] a healthy patient costs the NHS about £288 a year, those with one long-term condition cost an estimated £783, those with two cost £1,521 // [More doesnt stop sink overflowing! stop the faucet of new chronically sick people. Obesity is an incurable disease. So why is the government intent on punishing sufferers? | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian
Fat-shaming is worse than useless. David Cameron points his finger at the afflicted, but food manufacturers and advertisers are the real culprits. s overeating more addictive than crack cocaine? It’s hard to compare addiction rates, or to produce a clear definition that holds true across all substances and behaviours. But consider this crude contrast: of people who use crack cocaine, 10%-20% become addicted to it; across a nine-year study of 176,000 obese people, 98.3% of the men and 97.8% of the women failed to return to a healthy weight. Once extreme overeating begins, it appears to be almost impossible to stop. [...] seek out a range of highly palatable, energy-dense foods, of the kind with which we are now surrounded. The Cure for Brain Diseases Is in Your Gut - The Daily Beast
Dr. Christopher B. Forsyth and his team have recently demonstrated significant gut permeability, more commonly referred to as “leaky gut” in Parkinson’s patients. Their research has further revealed that this increase in gut leakiness enhances inflammation as well as the production of a unique protein—alpha-synuclein—both of which are characteristic of this disease. [...] In research headed by Dr. Rongzhen Zhang at the University of California, San Francisco, he and his team discovered that, like the Parkinson’s research had revealed, in ALS there is also an increase in the leakiness of the gut. And again, like in Parkinson’s, their research revealed that this mechanism caused a robust increase in inflammation, a mechanism that has long been known to be associated with ALS. [...] Inflammation, as a mechanism, is thought to underlie virtually every degenerative condition that humans experience—including Alzheimer’s disease, coronary artery disease, diabetes, and even cancer.

Exercise 'not key to obesity fight' - BBC News
In an editorial in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, three international experts said it was time to "bust the myth" about exercise. They said while activity was a key part of staving off diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and dementia, its impact on obesity was minimal. Instead excess sugar and carbs were key. The experts, including London cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, blamed the food industry for encouraging the belief that exercise could counteract the impact of unhealthy eating. They even likened their tactics as "chillingly similar" to those of Big Tobacco on smoking and said celebratory endorsements of sugary drinks and the association of junk food and sport must end. They said there was evidence that up to 40% of those within a normal weight range will still harbour harmful metabolic abnormalities typically associated with obesity. BBC News - 'Half of UK people' will get cancer
One in two people in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives, analysis suggests. Cancer Research UK said this estimate, using a new calculation method, replaced a forecast of more than one in three people developing the disease. Dr. Garth Davis - Meat alters microbiome (gut flora) disadvantageous to your health.
Dr. Lawrence David did a fascinating study showing that you could dramatically and quickly alter your gut biome when you eat meat, and meat can specifically create inflammatory bacteria. [...] Dr. McCarty looked at the role of excess essential amino acids has on affecting health and was amazed to find, as I was, the negative effects of excessive protein in the diet. He found that excess protein coming mainly from animals, caused obesity, heart disease, and cancer. In the discussion of the article he states, that the data was so overwhelming he changed to a vegan diet. He concludes with, “ I suspect the single injunction, ‘ do not eat animal products has the the potential to do more for world health than all of the abstruse wisdom in all of the worlds medical libraries”. I certainly agree with him.

BBC News - Out-of-hospital plan 'a recipe for disaster', MPs warn
The Health Select Committee said the NHS faced "one of its greatest challenges" dealing with patients with long-term conditions, such as diabetes. They account for 70% of health spending but only 30% of patients. The NHS has tried to ensure more care is done in the community, but the MPs questioned the wisdom of this strategy. The cross-party group said these patients would still need specialist hospital care. [...] Figures show these patients are responsible for two-thirds of outpatient and A&E visits and occupy 77% of beds.

The Leaky Gut Theory of Why Animal Products Cause Inflammation | NutritionFacts.org
A single meal of meats, eggs, and dairy can cause a spike of inflammation within hours that can stiffen one's arteries. Originally this was thought to be the result of saturated animal fat causing our gut lining to leak bacterial toxins into our blood stream leading to endotoxemia.
