Robert Skidelsky: 'Why don't more people aspire to living a good life?' | From the Observer | The Guardian
What went wrong?

The Thatcher years created a great regression in that belief, I think. We were getting there and then it was reversed. Though it was wicked and unrealisable, the failure of communism had a profound effect. There suddenly seemed no alternative to money as a way of organising society.

Connie Fisher on Make-Up
evolutionary psychology explanation: in more patriarchal societies, women wear less make-up (middle east v western world) make-up is a signal of equality. why do women wear make-up? "women have to show sexiness (attractiveness) to signal fertility. [...] subconscious natural selection." // industry worker "a treat, feeling good that rather looking good." // art, and can look like a different person // study showed that people prefer no-make-up make-up look. // advertising and marketing is positioning and spin it that it is seen in a feminist way along the way of 'you made the decision, you made yourself look better, ...' rarely do we judge men by their look ... ie rob ford toronto mayor, or chris christie. // Selfie has become a culture/pop culture phenomenon. bare face selfie is seen now as courageous! #trend - bare face is so alien to our make-up (look your best) norm/cultural norm! // putting on make-up and nice outfit (shopping, treat) can become coping mechanism against stress.

Mary Bassett: Why your doctor should care about social justice
[ DETERMINANT NOT JUST FOR HEALTH, BUT ALSO POOR HEALTH ] the structural inequities embedded in the world's political and economic organizations, inequities that make marginalized people more vulnerable. These same structural problems exist in the United States today, and as New York City's Health Commissioner, Bassett is using every chance she has to rally support for health equity and speak out against racism. "We don't have to have all the answers to call for change," she says. The Truth About Caitlyn Jenner’s Politics (time.com)
After all, many Americans still see transgender people as strange or illegitimate. So it wouldn’t surprise me if interest in this story is partly driven by a desire to see the world’s most famous transgender person being taken down by her own community. Caitlyn Jenner has positioned herself as a representative or “ambassador” of trans communities, so I can understand why trans people object or take issue when her views fail to accurately reflect or support those communities. But when people who are unconcerned with transgender rights themselves start piling on, quite frankly, I am suspicious.

Magistrate sacked for opposing same-sex adoption is suspended by NHS
Richard Page suspended as non-executive director by Kent and Medway trust after being struck off from bench [...] Richard Page, who sat on the family bench in Kent, was struck off after telling the BBC in March 2015: “My responsibility as a magistrate, as I saw it, was to do what I considered best for the child, and my feeling was therefore that it would be better if it was a man and woman who were the adopted parents.”

Andrew Ling, chairman of the Kent and Medway NHS and social care partnership trust (KMPT), has written to the NHS Trust Development Authority (TDA) requesting the suspension of the 69-year-old.

Page, who has worked in the field of mental health for 20 years, said about his suspension: “Last week, the prime minister distributed an Easter video in which he commended Christians and the church for their vital role in society, stating that we are a Christian country and should be proud of it.

Bye, Thigh Gap. [Hi] Thighbrows. [ superficial world that Social Media created. [... The upsetting reality of modern day poverty
My food budget? About £45 a week. [...] You see, to Jamie Oliver, a £20 shoulder of lamb is "cheap", because it can do two meals and it’s not the leg, so costs less per kilo. Two meals, Jamie? For 20 bloody quid, I want at least four meals. It’s a sad day when I get angry at Jamie Oliver for being a pretentious, arrogant prick. [...] I can’t afford to smoke. I don’t know many people who can. I have bars of soap next to my sinks and I am able to use them to good effect. I am not dirty. I am relatively poor. There is a difference. [...] The reality is eating plain boiled rice and pretending to like it, so the kids don’t know there’s no other food except for what is on their plates. [...] The reality of poverty is the shame of always having to say, “Sorry, I can’t afford it.” [...] I’ll make you a coffee, but only if you don’t have sugar – that’s a luxury we only buy in if we’re going to make a cake.

Gucci Casts First Transgender Model, Transparent Star Hari Nef
I think the most important part here is ... being stealth vs being out: IMG had met with transgender models in the past but passed on signing them when it became apparent that they were not interested in doing jobs that brought attention to their gender identities. They wanted to be seen as models, not transgender models. Nef did not share their feelings. "Give me all those jobs," she told Bart. "I want to work." And thus, the realisation that being trans still matters to the media and the public at large. Meaning it is still a big deal. A deal big enough that IMG doesn't sign trans models that want to stay stealth, because then they would compete with all the other women in the women's pool ... nothing special about that. // via https://redd.it/41vfr5

'Almost too late': fears of global superbug crisis in wake of antibiotic misuse | Society | The Guardian
Despite European Union regulations aiming to cut back on the unnecessary use of antibiotics, Dr Brown believes it will take more than just legislation to tackle the superbug crisis. Market forces will need to be compelled to cut usage, perhaps when prompted by a shift in public opinion, he said. “Those with a vested interest find ways around legislation. So, in addition to public policy we will need also the power of market forces,” he added. “When the public start demanding meat that has not seen antibiotics - because they understand that the meat may contain antibiotic resistant bacteria - only then will real progress be made. We need education about the threat.”

Patients less satisfied by GPs who refuse antibiotics - BBC News
[ quick fix society. rather pop a pill than not eat bacon for breakfast. show how much GP's have to change set-up and be incentivised 2 help people change. ] The study, published in the British Journal of General Practice, compared the prescribing rates of more than 95% of all GP surgeries in England to a survey of patient satisfaction. Those satisfaction scores are used to determine how much GPs get paid. Patients' satisfaction rose when they were listened to or carefully examined. A study last year warned that up to half of all prescriptions of antibiotics could be inappropriate - given to patients suffering coughs, colds, sore throats and the flu - none of which can be treated with antibiotics. The overuse of antibiotics has led to antibiotic resistance, when bacteria and infections can no longer be killed off or treated with strong drugs. We should do God, says report into religion in public life - BBC News
"We don't do God," as Tony Blair's spin doctor Alastair Campbell famously told an interviewer wishing to inquire further about the then prime minister's Christian faith. But according to a report published today, we urgently need to do God - or rather, as a nation, we need to understand religion and belief much better as a driving force within societies across the world, in order to deal with its impact at home. Here, the decrease in mainstream Christianity and the growth of minority religions are raising questions about national identity (what does it mean to be British today?) and how we can live together and accommodate difference peacefully and cohesively, balancing each other's freedoms and rights. From social media to the catwalk, is fantasy beauty failing young women? | Life and style | The Guardian
The world of vloggers and YouTubers has created a perverse, homogenised “beauty” with no diversity or reality. Jane Cunningham, journalist [...] The concept of appearance as a commodity to be valued has filtered from Hollywood to family homes across the UK. A 2013 attitudes survey by the Guide Association finding that 87% of girls aged 11-21 believe women are judged more on their appearance than their ability. The dissatisfaction resulting from the oft-perpetuated narrow vision of a beauty ideal can lead to low self-esteem – and worse. Jane Cunningham, the journalist behind Britishbeautyblogger.com, says young girls come to her in tears, feeling hopeless and helpless, unable to reconcile their own appearance with what they believe to be beautiful.

James Dawson criticises parents who attacked his LGBT guide for children | Books | The Guardian
“In 2015, when you read of people comparing gay people to paedophiles you just despair,” “I always think, as a community, we’ve come so far and achieved so much, but then you read something like that and realise there is still such small-mindedness and hatred left to contend with.” Dawson, who recently came out as transgender, pointed to the young LGBT people of Alaska “and the message they’re receiving from this furore: they must be so terrified to come out if this is the reaction they think they’ll get”. Rules banning gay and bisexual men from giving blood to be reviewed | Politics | The Guardian
A spokesperson for the gay rights campaign group Stonewall said: “We want a donation system that is fair and based on up-to-date medical evidence. Currently gay and bi people cannot give blood if they have had sex in the past 12 months, regardless of whether they used protection. Yet straight people who may have had unprotected sex can donate. “These current rules are clearly unfair and we want to see people asked similar questions, irrespective of their sexual orientation, to accurately assess the risk of infection. Screening all donors by sexual behaviour rather than by sexual orientation would increase blood stocks in times of shortage and create a safer supply by giving a more accurate, non-discriminatory assessment.”

Charlie Sheen discloses HIV positive diagnosis: 'It's a hard three letters to absorb' | Culture | The Guardian
Today Show host Matt Lauer asked Sheen why he continued to bring people including prostitutes to his home even though they were threatening him. Sheen said it was because he was depressed. He said that the period in March 2011 when he appeared on television and online making absurd claims and going on long tirades was not tied to his HIV status. “I wish I could blame it on that – that was more roid rage,” he said. [...] CBS fired Sheen from the long-running sitcom Two and a Half Men in March 2011 after the Golden Globe-winning actor had a public meltdown and criticised the show’s creator, Chuck Lorre. Filming had been disrupted in the previous year as Sheen, who was the highest-paid actor on television at the time, received treatment for drug addiction. //&! Prostate cancer drug ruling a 'fiasco', says charity - BBC News
[ end of life management. after extensive surgery failed, chemo failed, you are a broken man who needs adult pampers because of incontinence and wait for your last meal managing the spread of cancer with morphine. nobody talks about those extremes. something like this should get onto the packaging of bacon. ] A charity says a decision by the NHS in England to reject a drug for men with prostate cancer is a "fiasco". Abiraterone is already given to patients at the end-of-life after chemotherapy as it gives patients an extra few months. But the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said it was not cost-effective to offer it earlier. It said while the drug improved quality of life, it was unclear whether it had the same impact on life expectancy. This was due to problems with the research data, NICE said, claiming the trial was finished early - something disputed by the drug's makers Janssen.

The Trans Movement Needs a New, Science Based Strategy | Brynn Tannehill
Tuesday's defeat of HERO highlights several conclusions that the LGBT movement needs to take to heart for the next decade or so. Foremost is that we will not win transgender issues directly at the ballot box, or in the gerrymandered republican legislatures which dominate the political landscape. [...] When opponents frame legal protections for transgender people as a choice between a group strangers (who are suspected of being perverts anyway) and the safety your wives and daughters, transgender people will lose every time. So far, anti-LGBT forces have been far more successful at pushing their narrative. I don't foresee this changing anytime soon. [...] Convincing large numbers of people driven by fear and religious beliefs simply will not happen. &! bit.ly/1MgrDKK &! https://redd.it/3rxwmd &! slate.me/1Op7eck

Should we treat mental illness the same as physical illness?
I have grown uneasy with the pressure to validate mental illness by analogy with the physical. In a truly compassionate society this would not be necessary. We risk turning suffering into an identity, a foregone conclusion, a test of whether one really, really deserves to get help. We risk asking those suffering to conform to a fantasy version of their disorder, in which happiness is weakness and recovery a sham. I understand why we do it, but we risk making mentally ill people feel they have something to prove. They don’t.

Rezension ǀ Was wäre ein selbstbestimmtes Leben?
Dr Margaret Chan and Mike Bloomberg call for higher taxes on tobacco. Why the phrase ‘first world problem’ is condescending to everyone | Books | The Guardian
first world problem [...] To pre-emptively concede that my problem is just a first world one is to ostentatiously check my privilege before anyone else tells me to do so. At the same time, I remind myself and everyone in earshot that we are indeed living in the “first world”. So it is also a humblebrag. [...] For a start, it patronises those outside the “first world” by implying that hunger, disease and war are not only prevalent among the global poor but in some way the sole conditions of their lives. It implicitly characterises the less fortunate majority of the world’s population as saintly idiots who would never dream of complaining about anything more trivial. In the guise of right-on sympathy, we condescendingly picture others as living lives of homogeneous horror while rhetorically rendering them invisible as people, denying the individuality of everyone’s various joys and sorrows. [...] As is well known, we all compare ourselves to others close by, and feel bad if we are ...

"ethical killing." we deny people suicide, assisted dying. but kill and eat other beings not so unsimilar to use. and search for ethical means now, defining what is ethical. double standard. one for animal called human because we are so evolutionary advanced. and another for animals not similar to us. // //After years of bad press, salmon farms are signing up to new certification standards in a bid to prove their environmental and social credentials

BBC Documentary - Sugar v Fat - YouTube - min 38 - engineering addictive food "I have a sweet tooth"
Fat vs Sugar (vs Salt). Its not one. Its the combination of 3 via processed foods/home made dishes/junk/fast food/ready meals by the food industry towards the bliss point, moorish, addictive. Tricking the brain 2 overeat those engineered foods! SEE BOOK: Salt, Sugar, Fat by Michael Moss! bit.ly/1O1F0Uh - A combination u cant find it in nature. Bliss point ratio! Cheese cake/glaze donut is half fat half sugar. & dont forget the Salt. Processed Food is literally deadly because it IS engineered 2 addiction (Wall Street Food Conglomerate profit maximisation/shareholder value) combination of 50/50 + high in salt = moorish. Tricking our stop buttons (Leptin and Ghrelin, satiety feeling (via condensed volume (no/little added fiber) to calories ratio)) that we have // Thus have to make the effort & planning, making your meals yourself. // Also Dr. Robert Lustig, boo&talks: processed food as culprit. //&! youtu.be/_H5oFX7bHtY + exercise & animal protein culprit too! //&! youtu.be/2uisu5dY3G0

- how can you fix something that people think is normal. that they are normal? you have to enlighten them, not shove it in their face, but they have to do the work themselves. then comes the intrinsic motivation with that and the step by step, incremental change ... that eventually compounds. change is hard. but hard things are worth it. rewarding so much more. its a individual private personal journey. //&! What I Learned This Week About Tim Cook’s Apple | Re/code
[ always along the motto: extension of you, part of you. The new Apple under Jobs was NOT an overnight success! It build on its differentiation, strong base, a cult, a Tribe, 1000 True Fans, and build on it stride by stride. Most capitalistic company out of SV, no counter-culture out of largest corp on world. & can pull of iAd coup because it has monopsony! & Duopoly w Android. ] Many people love Apple, others despise it. But, even without Jobs, it cannot be ignored. There simply is no other company that combines such a high-quality hardware line with such well-regarded software platforms. A faltering Samsung has the former, but not the latter. A strong and admirable Google has the latter, but not the former. If you didn’t believe that before, this week’s event made it crystal clear, with once-bitter rivals like Microsoft and Adobe showing up onstage to boast about how well their products worked with new Apple hardware and software. [ sw & hw iteration = leverage comp advantage ]

Thousands have died soon after being found ‘fit to work’ by the DWP’s benefit tests - UK Politics - UK - The Independent
The Department for Work and Pensions battled for months not to release the numbers, with its chief minister Iain Duncan Smith at one point telling Parliament they did not exist. [...] "What lies behind these figures is a cruel climate generated by some politicians and sections of the media that seeks to demonise those in need and undermine public confidence in our welfare state," [...] In 2012 a government advisor appointed to review the Government’s Work Capability Assessment said the tests were causing suffering by sending sick people back to work inappropriately. // [ privatisation and profiteering ] // Mr Duncan Smith arguing that the previous cash level created a “perverse incentive”. // &! bit.ly/1Ik0ovC &! bit.ly/1fJlfSe - More than 80 people a month are now dying after being declared ‘fit for work’.
