Capitalism’s Crisis of Stagnation and Austerity
After the 2008-09 financial crisis, the hope was that a combination of economic recovery, inflation and austerity would shrink the debt mountain. This, though, was too optimistic. Growth has been below par, inflation subdued and austerity self-defeating. (“Global debt is the danger: beware the butterfly moment” Financial Times 6 January 2018)

The sun may never set on British misconceptions about our empire | Ian Jack | Opinion | The Guardian
How much this avoidance has to do with Britain’s present feelings towards its old empire is hard to know. No doubt the history curriculum has changed since my day and, in any case, feelings about the past come from many other sources than the classroom. But according to a YouGov poll conducted around the time of the Rhodes Must Fall protests two years ago, 43% of British people believed the British empire was a good thing and only 19% a bad thing, with 25% believing it was neither. Furthermore, 44% felt that Britain’s history of colonialism was something to be proud of and only 19% felt it should be regretted. As to the statue of Cecil Rhodes at Oriel College, Oxford, only 11% thought it should be removed.

In Western Europe alone there are independence movements eager to bring about their own break with central governments. They, too, are watching closely.

In Spain’s Basque Country, the fate of Catalonia is of great interest. But there are countless others keeping tabs. From Denmark’s Faroe Islands to Belgium’s independence-minded Flanders, from France’s Corsica to Italy’s wealthy Padania, groups and regions across Europe are weighing what joins them and what separates them from the countries to which they belong. After all, the nation-state is a relatively recent invention. Every place has its own history.

Millennials are spending three times more of their income on housing than their grandparents yet are often living in worse accommodation, says a study launched by former Conservative minister David Willetts that warns of a “housing catastrophe”. The Polish government is seeking $1trn in war reparations from Germany
“This policy is not only primitive and unwise but also deeply immoral,” says Piotr Buras, the head of the Warsaw office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. “To blame and punish the second and third generations of Germans for atrocities committed over 70 years ago threatens what should be our ultimate goal – that of peace and reconciliation between nations.” [...] Government propaganda about contemporary Germany is curiously contradictory. On one hand, Germany is portrayed as a threat because it hasn’t changed enough – Kaczynski has implied that Merkel was brought to power by the Stasi and that Germany may be planning to reclaim part of western Poland. On the other, Germany is presented as dangerous because it has changed too much, into an exporter of liberal values that could flood Poland with transsexuals and Muslim migrants.

End austerity – and kickstart Martin Luther King’s revolution of values | Richard Kozul-Wright | Opinion | The Guardian
Hyperglobalisation has concentrated massive wealth in a few hands, boosting the cult of materialism that the great civil rights campaigner warned us about // Byung-Chul Han // The real threat now is to the underlying trust, cohesion and sense of fairness that markets depend upon in order to function effectively. Against this, insisting that “there is no alternative” is yesterday’s political slogan. People everywhere desire much the same thing: a decent job, a secure home, a safe environment, a better future for their children and a government that listens and responds to their concerns. They want a different deal from that offered by hyperglobalisation. Prosperity for all cannot be delivered by austerity-minded politicians, rent-seeking corporations and speculative bankers. What is urgently needed now is a global new deal. Three elements – recovery, regulation and redistribution – remain at the heart of any such deal. Book Richard Kozul-Wright is director of the globalisation and development strategies division in the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development. Its annual report, Beyond Austerity: Towards a Global New Deal, is published today

Britain’s young suffer as austerity continues to take its toll | Letters | Business | The Guardian
It is governmental negligence when the poorest young citizens do not have enough money to heat a home or buy a healthy balanced diet. Universities report time and time again that cold homes increase rates of respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, excess winter deaths and mental illness. Inadequate diets increase the risk of malnutrition, obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Debt with insufficient income impacts on health indirectly through increased stress, depression and anxiety, and suboptimal coping behaviours – such as increased rates of smoking and drinking.

After the crash in 2008, the Queen asked: “Why did no one see it coming?” Ten years later, she might well ask the same question about the rise of early deaths among young people.

Then there is the war between generations. As the baby boomers approached retirement, they sought to safeguard their wealth. Inflation-targeting central banks, the dismantling of the welfare state and fiscal austerity were the natural results. The modern macroeconomic constitution has disenfranchised the inflationary constituency of the young. &!

Where have all the movers gone? - Council of Mortgage Lenders
It should be known by now that the policy of a home owning democracy supported by London and exploited by London was and is and will be a catastrophe to the productivity and skills of this economy. Because of the misdirected money flows into unproductive houses (capital, asset for retirement, welfare, social mobility of kids). To the contrary of Germany. When policy of capital investment is geared towards poductive investments, assets, capital, skills, expansion, R&D. And where renters have rights! //&! - The housing ladder only worked because of the unique economic conditions of the late 20th century. It's now broken and unlikely to recover. & - and houses don't pay taxes (NI, pension pot).

UK pay squeeze breaks all sorts of records for all the wrong reasons | Larry Elliott | Business | The Guardian
As John Philpott, who runs the Jobs Economist consultancy, noted: “What’s remarkable is that pay growth, however measured, is so weak at a time when employment is at joint record rate of 74.8% and unemployment at a 42-year low of 4.6%, driven almost entirely in the latest quarter by relatively strong growth in full-time jobs for employees on permanent contracts. Hard times and near full employment make strange bedfellows, highlighting the extent to which a deregulated labour market with an abundance of workers available to fill low wage vacancies has altered the UK jobs landscape.”

Yes this really is the end of Tory austerity – because it was never about economics in the first place | The Independent
[private sector will pick up the tap - the households did, but not corporations! bc long-term ROI growth in not attractive in the west w secular stagnation! see Richard Koo ] But it was a very long time coming. It became clear within a year of George Osborne’s 2010 “emergency budget”, which forced through huge cuts in capital budgets and an intense squeeze on Whitehall departments and welfare spending, that the austerity medicine was hurting, not helping.

The economy was flatlining, teetering on the verge of recession. Whether this was primarily due to the crisis in the neighbouring eurozone and a spike in global oil prices or because the negative knock-on impact of the government’s domestic spending cuts was bigger than initially thought is still debated by economists.

Naomi Klein: ‘Trump is an idiot, but don’t underestimate how good he is at that’ | Books | The Guardian
One essential ingredient of resistance, she suggests, is to retain a belief in telling and understanding complex stories, keeping faith with narrative.

One of the questions that Klein’s book does not reach a conclusion about is how conscious Trump is of his shock doctrine tactics. Is he a demagogue in the scheming manner of Putin and Erdoğan, or just a useful idiot for the forces around him?

93% Of All Jobs "Created" Since 2008 Were Added Through The Birth/Death Model | Zero Hedge
Here are the details of how over 90% of the jobs created in the past decade were nothing more than a "statistical" adjustment in some BLS model. [...] Furthermore, self-employed persons as a percentage of the working age population and the number of jobs created by establishments less than one year old are also declining. [...] the multi-decade slowdown in new business formation. Further supporting the Harvard study findings, a Brookings Institution paper called “Declining business dynamism in the United States: a look at states and metros” shows that business formations slowed down and business deaths accelerated after the crisis of 2008 (below to the right). (( THE LOW HANGING FRUITS OF INNOVATION HAVE BEEN PLUCKED! + ECON WINNER TAKES ALL = COMPETITION ON PRICE )) [...] The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) seems to be alone in its belief that the entrepreneurial environment in the US is improving. We believe that the BLS has been artificially inflating the monthly payroll numbers via the birth and death adjustment. This overstatement is not trivial in nature – the adjustment added 30% of all jobs reported since 2010.

// angriffe auf fluechtlinge, buerger die fluechtlinge helfen, angriffe auf fluechtlingseinrichtungen // east more racist, 25x more likely to be opfer of rightwing extremist crime // // &! &!
